Holy schmoly. I'm a big fan. I see all these words like legendary & iconic and that doesn't even cover the half of it. Re-invented himself over and over. RIP Ziggy, your stylistic contributions to the arts will be missed.

I listen to the radio today and I think, "Ain't there one damn song that can make me... break down and cry?"

Sad. Loved some of his stuff, hated some of it. Do you remember the first time you saw a picture of him? I do, at a local Woolworths! Handsome guy when he wasn't all tarted up though.

I didn't realize that Bowie lived in Bermuda for a while until this morning.

I'm really surprised - I thought he'd be around for much longer.

RIP Ziggy, your stylistic contributions to the arts will be missed.

I always thought that Ziggy was a about Jimi; left handed taking it all too far, etc.
Ziggy Stardust is a character Bowie created with the help of his then-wife, Angela. The character's name was inspired by the '60s psychobilly musician, Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Bowie performed under the Stardust persona for about a year. This specific song is about Stardust growing too conceited: "Making love with his ego, Ziggy sucked up into his mind." Stardust's band, The Spiders From Mars, consequently plan to get revenge on the egotistical front man: "So we bitched about his fans, and should we crush his sweet hands?" Bowie said that the song is "about the ultimate rock superstar destroyed by the fanaticism he creates."

Gutted.

Actually teared up listening to "Five Years" on the train this morning. This is affecting me a LOT more than these things usually do.

In general I tend to agree with you guys. But Bowie didn't seem all that decadent in his later years. I would have been less shocked if he died 25 years ago than I am that he died now.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

Bowie outlived Lou Reed and Freddy Mercury but Mick, Keith and Iggy all outlived him.

He was a giant. I know of no one who doesn't like at least a good portion of his great period (up to about 1983). I saw him at the very end of that period touring behind "Let's Dance." As I said, a giant. Ashes to ashes, funk to funky.

His prior life may or may not have had anything to do with his death in this case but, even if he had been clean and sober in recent years, that stuff takes its toll.

Bono latched onto to the phrase 'Planet earth is blue'
Whether he came up with that on his own or it was fed to him, that's not a bad line to circulate today.

"Space Oddity" and the "Planet Earth is Blue" line in particular was a big part of U2's 2009-2011 tour theme, so doubtful that it was "fed to" anyone in that band.

I've been having this weird feeling for months now that David Bowie is going to die suddenly. I suppose that it's been a few months and there's a new album coming speaks to the inaccuracy of my feelings but you know. If we had a "death pool" at CPG he'd be my ace in the hole kinda pick.

Sadly, a nice pick. He's reportedly had multiple heart attacks, and doesn't fly anymore, right? T'is a shame, as up until about ten years ago, I was CONVINCED he would, like, outlive me.

You morbid little freaks more or less even got the date right.

I have to say, Bowies failure to die until now subsided that fear and I was shocked a little when Wifey Bucket shared the news this morning.

I didn't drop to my knees and whip out a ring or anything, but we were riding the escalator at Madison Square Garden to see Bowie perform when we decided to get married. This morning of course I found the entire show on youtube. Seems like everyone has a particular strong memory of the guy though.

Right now we're watching a special on him on Palladia.

This might be the most amazing .gif I have ever seen.

I'm more in this camp. I was sad to hear about this, and disappointed that he kept the cancer battle private. I think he deserved to hear all the accolades he is getting now while he was still alive. But I understand his desire for privacy.

That being said, I have never understood folks' having a strong emotional reaction to the death of celebrities that they never met. I don't think I like movies or music any less than others, but when these folks die, it's never anything more than a fleeting feeling of sadness, or occasionally, regret that I never got a chance to see a musician live.

And then within a week or so I forget about the death. Six months from now I'll forget David Bowie is dead. Someone will remind me, then I'll feel sad again for a minute or two.

And I don't mean to imply that there is anything wrong with having such a reaction, it's just odd that fans can be so disparate in their feelings.

Re: Your Circuit's Dead, There's Something Wrong (sp. fr/Gue

I think it has to do with mourning the loss of a connection to someone who brought joy into our lives. Even if we didn't know the artist personally we still enjoyed his/her presence in this world and are sad to have lost it.

But as you said, these are feelings and we all have disparate reactions to these things.

Re: Your Circuit's Dead, There's Something Wrong (sp. fr/Gue

And then there's the story of a 25 y/o Japanese man trying to kill himself over the news of Bowie's death (25? Really? The bulk of his career came before you were born dude!)
Now one suspects that this guy had other problems and the Bowie thing is maybe just a trigger but, still, hero-worship is an odd thing.
I remember when Steve Jobs died in the midst of the 'Occupy' movement and the whole 'fuck the one percenters' vibe, and then the irony of seeing an outpouring of public grief from some within those movements over it all, as if CEOs suck unless they happen to make products you like and use.

Like I said, it can be a selective thing. Some who may not understand an emotional reaction over a politician or pop star they never knew will get all weepy over the death of an athlete they also never met, or vice-versa.

This is the .gif a little slower so you can see each face for 41th of a second. The wacky background I tried (u can see it in the avatar) to add looks better at the faster speed. I should have had the portrait going slow and the background moving fast.

Re: Your Circuit's Dead, There's Something Wrong (sp. fr/Gue

I grew up with Bowie. I had played acoustic guitar teaching myself Cat Stevens songs in the early 70's. When Ziggy Stardust came out I had to get an electric guitar because I wanted to play that song so bad. And it was such an easy song to play. A little fuzzbox action and I was a Spider from Mars!

My son grew up with Bowie. He started playing acoustic guitar when he was a young teen because he wanted to play Space Oddity. I knew he was a fan but I didn't know that it was Space Oddity that influenced him to pick up an acoustic until we spoke about the loss yesterday. Amazin'.

My son Chris created these cartoon frames when he first started doing graphics about ten years ago. He was around 12 yrs old.

I wouldn't presume to guess that you like or love music less than others... But it's likely you may have needed it less than some. I think the reaction you describe is less about knowing the dead (obviously) and more about how the dead helped them better know/describe/understand themselves. For Bowie, that's a wide, wide array of people.
