No Pillow Deal for Upton

6 years, 125 million to the Tigers. Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

They say long-term deals don't usually work out, and I understand the odds are against it. But this deal looks like it could be one of the better ones. Crazy good lineup.

Really wanted to see the Mets get involved on Heyward and Upton. Cespedes, I feel, is a worse bet than either of these two. I've known for a while that there was no chance here, but still disappointing.

As for what this means for Cespedes, I'm trying to decide if I'm happy another team is off the board, or if I'm starting to realize that a short-term deal just ain't happening.

Yo will get 4-5 years from someone, he's the next in line.
Mets will go to ST with what they have. *yawn*

6/125 surprises me considering it took so long. Surprises me from the Tigers too. AL Central is going to be interesting.

Opt out after the 2nd year for Upton
Makes one kind of nostalgic for the days when offering $22 mil per year actually bought the team a commitment of sorts from a player.

this 2-year opt out thing is starting to feel a little weird. That year is already supposed to be the epic offseason of the millenia, and more and more players are giving themselves the option to participate. I wonder if the choice of that year is the team's choice "well, if you're gonna opt out, at least opt out when we have other options" or is there some sort of big push to get the owners to open all the pocketbooks at once?
