Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Ya know, seeing a few Mets as examples, the no-border look is pretty kool. Still feels like Stadium Club to me though. And I'll never forgive Topps for lopping the ends of the best logo known to man and the universe.

Still, I will enjoy the 16 cards. Because years from now I'll point to the '16's and say, yea, that was the year the Mets started their run of 3 World Championships in a row.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

The other thing is that I'm legitimately excited about the players on the cards this year, too. The last few years it's been like "Oh, great. Vic Black and Matt denDekker." But starting with the Update series last year, it's suddenly turned the corner.

Today -- Target had them out yesterday. Stopped in and grabbed one more back BECAUSE I CAN'T STOP MYSELF:

Four packs, ZERO Travis Jankowskis. You're killing me, Topps.

(And if any of you DO go out and buy anything -- DGW? Z? -- save me your #184 Travis Jankowski cards.)

Still haven't completed the Archive set, although I can't say I've been trying lately. IIRC my brother and I went thru your need list and I was a bit disappointed to see that between us we only had 11 cards that you needed. I'll send them along if you still need em.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Pretty cool drop-in to this year's set, here:

Jones' card is part of Topps' first-pitch set, which it started in 2015. It's mostly celebrities and pro athletes featured on the first-pitch cards, but Topps smartly adds notable fans to the mix too.

This year's list includes soccer player Abby Wambac, NBA star Kristaps Porzingis, golfer Jordan Spieth, as well as celebrities James Taylor, Bill Withers, LeVar Burton and Johnny Knoxville. Even Bud Selig got one.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Just cracked my first pack.

First card of the 2016 (Olbermann says it doesn't matter but I strongly disagree): Hunter Pence.

First Mets card: That Gooden MLB Debut (seen above) but the back of mine says silly, unbelievable stuff.

First regular Mets card: Niese. Meh.

A 36 card pack. 2 Mets. The Gooden...maybe worth 3 regular common Mets. I did good.:)
5 bucks a pack though. That's kind of extreme. What do kids get for an allowance these days? Like 50 bucks?

I got 2 of those 72 card boxes (10$). I don't think I like these if the cards come all in one stack (just looked, they do, gah-better not be any doubles). I like the individual packs that come boxed. But this was all they had boxwise.

I just picked up a couple of these boxes. I felt it was a no brainer - 144 cards for $20, or a 100 card box for $20...

The baseball season seems just a little closer now:

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Totally agree. Just saying that's the price difference.

Also -- eyeball your cards closely. If you've got any of the camo jerseys in your photos, you might have a short-printed variation that might earn you a few bucks on eBay: http://www.beckett.com/news/2016/02/201 ... ariations/

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I bought one of the $10 boxes yesterday -- got Lagares, Wilmer and the team card -- and think the design is beautiful. That said, I don't like this idea of alternate versions of the base cards. Not the parallels - I have no use for those -- but the versions of the base cards with different photos. Based on that Beckett post, many of the short-printed cards have better photos.

Just seems like Topps keeps making it harder and harder for collectors to enjoy the product.

seawolf17
Feb 07 2016 10:26 PM
Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I totally understand that, but you can certainly enjoy the product without knowing the variations exist. If you're an obsessive player collector, then finding the short-printed Conforto variation can be a pain. But if you just want to have a Conforto RC in your collection, the "A" version is perfectly fine.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I thought I was doing horrible but I ended up with a dozen Mets cards. That's not bad. I'm not counting the World Series cards ( I got 2) which I will be counting as Mets cards even if it only has the team name on the back (One has Cueto, the other has Escobar, Gordon, & d'Arnaud). Got the two top cards on my wantlist (for the entire set), Mets and "other". The Conforto rook (reg- if I ever get the camo, great, if not, don't care) and the Kris Bryant future star.

The correlation was very good. No doubles within packs (I know u get more for your buck but I still don't like those giant brick packs), card order within packs is broken down nicely. I thought I got a double of the GOODEN MLB DEBUT card but on closer inspection one has silver font and one has gold font. Everything else on the two cards are identical, but one is slightly tinted gold. What's the deal with that? I did get doubles of Wilmer and Familia. I got...I guess it's a parallel Cuddyer (it's rainbowy). And a first pitch card with Victor Espinoza in a Mets jersey.

[u:3pr8jage]Special cards[/u:3pr8jage]
[u:3pr8jage]Bergers Best:[/u:3pr8jage] I usually don't like throwback cards that don't have a regular old stat card back, but I'll make an exception with these because there's a neat portrait drawing of Sid on the card back.
[u:3pr8jage]Perspectives:[/u:3pr8jage] Kinda kool and different.
I like the alt gold border look this year. They put some thought into that.

The rest like BACK TO BACK and PRESSED INTO SERVICE are garbage, at least til I see a Met on one.

DGW: I got the Houston Street too. That's the only card I've seen that does not have the double corner fade look. Only has the fade at the bottom.

I like the design but once again, feels more like Stadium Club, and the cropping of team logos was a silly move. I mean, they pay oodles to use these logos and then then chop em up. At least ours says Met. The Yankees are the Kees.

The MLB Debut have bronze, silver, and gold versions.

There are a number of parallels. The "rainbow foil" version you got is the most basic. There's a black & white photo parallel, and there are a number of other color parallels (gold, purple, black, etc.) where the "smoke" part of the image has some colored gridding in it.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I think it has to do with the way they are printed and cut - certain batches go to the 72 count boxes, others go to the blister packs, others go to the individual packs, and so on. I think buying a variety of packs gives you the best percentage of card variablity.

I can tell you that in the brick packs the correlated batch flipped to an upside down card every 4 cards or so. I'm used to seeing a dozen cards or more before the flip, so that tells me they are mixing them much better. But of course, that's only within that batch. I should go back and see if there are any brick packs left of that same batch. Baseball cards don't sell like hot cakes around here.

With those 72 card bricks (a stack of 72 cards wrapped in clear plastic inside a box that's like 4 times the size of the stack) I treat the cards like a bunch of packs. I'll look at 15 of em and then put the stack down. Pick it up an hour later and look at 15 more.

Yea, I'm nutz.

Nah - It took me two weeks to open the last 2015 box I bought. I would open two packs at a time, and leave the rest.

As for collation, I've noticed that I get needed cards in groups of 3, which is interesting...

That's a beauty.
Something seems off with the top font/name. The lack of a dot? I don't think that's it because some didn't have the dot. Font too thin? It's a little thing but it bugs me.

2016 Topps:
I suppose this is a camo one.
It would really be messed up if there are camo photos used on reg issue as well.

Has everyone seen the reg Bautista card?
I want to show it but it's a "WOW" card and I don't want to ruin the fun of first seeing this come out of a pack.

Oh, also, my fav side dish this year have to be the Wacky Packs cards.
But get this, I've made 3 BB card runs so far this season. I got 3 of the same Wacky Packs card! The only ones I got. I don't even want to know what the Mets one looks like yet, but I want it bad (I think there's one for every team). I might go for this entire subset.

Only six? That sucks.
I just don't understand Topps anymore. The Royals? Gah!
Is there a Mets one? There better be or I'll have to make one.

One odd behavior that I didn't realize was a habit until this season, I guess because it's been so long in between trips, is I pull the cards of the players on the team we played in the world series. I have a little stack of Royals. I found myself doing this and thinking back, and in 87,74, even 70, I did the same thing. Pulled the Bo-Sox, the A's, and the Orioles (& I would pull and follow these players for years in many cases). Didn't do it in 2001. Saw no need for a pile of Yankee cards.

I bet we all have wacky card habits. Anyone else do this?

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

So I picked up my first Heritage cards this season. I prefer packs but they didn't have any, only the small blister boxes with a brick of 35 cards in plastic. I got 3 boxes @10 bucks each. I figure these are from the same batch and I'm hoping for minimal doubles.

So I ripped open my first box and I get this:

Now back in the day while collecting Mets cards I saved cello & rack packs if they had Mets on top. Not always, but if it was a Strawman or Gooden, Keith or Carter,..in other words my favorite Mets. I had a fantastic collection (also non Mets- like a Cello w/Boggs rook on top). I remember when I got Gregg Jefferies FUTURE STAR card on top of a rack pack I thought-"I'm gonna save this and make a MINT in about 15 years." Haha.

I no longer have that collection and now I am debating whether I should open this or save it. If it was a player it would be a very hard call to make. I'd deff save a Reynolds rook. Is Conforto's Heritage a rookie? Would any of you other collectors save it unopened?

I also have to add- ugh, I hate to nitpick but to me it matters. The printing & font of METS on the 1967 Topps card is not a difficult thing to reproduce in its exactitude. I do it all the time. But 2016 Heritage couldn't get it right. Wtf? And it's a simple case of the space between the letters. Now you may say this is anal, but a card border is like a finger print to me and I see no good reason why they shouldn't match.
They could have pulled the M closer to the other letters, or could have spaced them equally off the M. Instead they do both. Shoddy.

Actual 67' Topps card:

I feel like Heritage juuuuust misses the design every year, which is always bizarre to me.

That said, no, I don't know that there's any benefit to keeping this sealed.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I couldn't keep it closed. I did horrible overall, only 7 Mets out of 105 cards. But 2 of the cards made up for it.

So when I saw the Conforto Rook I was like:

[fimg=400]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fHPcR4sW3bA/Vv2jzEoExRI/AAAAAAAAmTg/N112QdPgqXYHsUrTn4-1XXQ49QHAOJpmwCCo/s720-Ic42/HERTGConforto-Nola%2BROOK.png[/fimg]
Conforto shares a rookie card with Nola! The locals are very high on Nola.
In 15 years this card will be worth a mint. ha ;)

And then when I got the deGrom refractor I was like:

65-66-67 were the years I was waiting for and for 67 they missed the color and gloss. Cheap stock maybe.

Stock feels super solid to me. If I fling one at someone they better duck. But yes, it's finish is almost the opposite of gloss, which is disappointing. You can't get any flatter than that. I also got a Josh Donaldson refractor, although not blue bordered like the deGrom. White border. With this set the gloss look of the refractor makes the regular card look extra dull. So the refractors would be the way to go with these, and who can be bothered?

If I get one in a pack or box great, if not I'm not gonna go too crazy. The hobby is becoming too elite for me.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I got 4 packs of Wacky Packages today. And a box of Heritage, which I really didn't want, so that's a sign I'm getting carried away. Lilbit.

Wolfy, I could swear I posted this here or on fb but I see no evidence of it. Maybe I PM'd it, haven't checked.
RE: the ARCHIVE set. Between my brother and I we only found 11 cards that you needed. This was a while ago. I dunno if it's worth mailing but I will if you still need 'em and want 'em. I haven't bought any more Archives since then- I haven't seen them out there. I have which cards listed on a pad that I can't find atm. Sorry I lost track of this.

So the Wacky Packages:
First pack, first team card,of course it's going to be the Royals. I wouldn't have it any other way. But then The Cubs, the Braves, and the Yankees. GAH! Second pack, Phillies, NOOOOO! I can't take this!
Next card, yeaaaaaaaaa, Mets. Mets N.Y. Deli Meat Mitts. Lunch meat made from old baseball mitts. Haha. I scanned it but showing the card would be a spoiler with these. They are the funniest the first time you see them. I will show the Yankees though. Because fk 'em & this is pretty kool.

Heritage: Doing HORRIBLE! 9 packs: 1 Met, Cuddyer, 1 pack left.
I did get a World Series card and I almost wish I didn't, because now I'll want all of these.
Very kool but very awful quality B&W image used on this one.

I have 2 Wacky Packs left. If I get anything worthwhile I will report in later.

There's a color variation of that card. Either it's very rare, or some seller's crazy, because the ask for that card on ebay is $129.99.

Here's the whole Topps Heritage 2016 WS set. It's extremely Royal-centric -- even more so than you'd expect given that the Royals won the damn thing four games to one. Game three - the Mets lone win in the Series - isn't included in the set.

Could the color one be like a plate or something? My first thought was these need to be in color, but if they are already out there I won't bother.
Far from my fav WS design, even tho I realize they're tied to 1967.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

The original '67 WS cards resembled a TV set (as did next year's WS cards). I wonder why Topps used B&W images for its '67 WS cards. I'm pretty sure that by '67, every prime time network TV show was in color. Maybe it was because more than half of the viewing public still didn't own color TV sets? Who knows? Maybe there was no reason at all. Maybe Topps saved a little bit of money on the production side by using B&W images instead of color? Maybe it was because the '66 WS itself aired in B&W?

Quick research, looks like Topps used B&W photos for postseason cards through 1971. 1972 is the first year featuring color photos for postseason coverage cards.

Don't know if there's a puzzle of the Matza Balls one. These blisters were $9.99 with 4 packs and a mini 2 card pack. Come on Topps--5 packs a box please, u conniving bastids. Still worth it and I'll grab another box or 2 of these and try to get the puzzle.

These days it's a tuff gig, the Wacky Packs. I imagine the politically correct atmosphere makes it a bit more difficult to make fun of stuff.
I'm not finding them as much funny as just cute. But there are exceptions. My favorite (non-Mets) so far.

Probably. Maybe. Those "color" WS cards you posted one above, as you probably know, are not from color photogrpahs, but from b&w's that were hand color painted. Hand painted because there was no Photoshop, or PC's 50-60 years ago. I know that in the late 1940's, most color baseball cards were hand painted from b&w, usually team issued, photos. That's because in the late '40's, it was cheaper to hand paint the cards than to produce cards from color photographs. I wonder if that was still the case 15-20 years later.

You could see how Topps was determined to crop out the faces of those fans following Mazeroski to home plate while, obviously, keeping Maz himself in the shot. With today's tools, you could take out the fans in about a minute - cleanly - and then you'd have a shot that's framed or cropped so that the top border isn't right on the top of the head of Mazeroski. As the focal point of that shot, Maz's whole body should've been in that crop, including his right arm, extended in the air.

OE: The more I stare at the Maz b&w, the more I believe that Maz's right arm is the key element in the pic.

I was born in the wrong era. I would have manually colorized everything!
I think if Topps used in-house employees from what they termed an art department it would cost 'em next to nothing.

I believe the '63s are real color pics. I own two of those.

It's funny you write that because as I was re-reading my post, after it was sent, I thought the same thing. The artists could have hand painted grass and dirt over where the fans were -- if they wanted to invest the time.

As for new versions of that card, depends what you mean by a new version. If you wanted to reproduce the exact feel of those '61 cards, you'd be the person for that job. You can colorize to make the b&w photo look as if was photographed and developed using the same technology and equipment available 55 years ago. I can make a color card from that photo, but it'll have another vibe.

The fact that 71 was in color and our Mets WS cards in '70 were not was a very traumatic experience for me.
It's why I started that blog.

If Maz was a Met I'd do it in a second. If not he goes to the back of the line. I am currently colorizing a Mantle pic with Koufax in the background from the 1964 WS. I'm not doing it for a card, it's just a classic photo.

Here's a traditional vertical style card for Game seven. I think the horizontal shot works better. The wider angle captures all the ensuing mayhem going on at home plate that you would expect, given the dramatic nature of what ESPN ranks as the greatest HR ever.

[fimg=300:2xgaxha4]https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1586/26074300433_aee26e6060_o.jpg[/fimg:2xgaxha4] [fimg=444:2xgaxha4]https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1538/26599794531_44e694d784_o.jpg[/fimg:2xgaxha4][fimg=544:2xgaxha4]https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1537/26040717884_34f30c1bc0_o.jpg[/fimg:2xgaxha4]

Here's the video of the shot, -- the entire broadcast was discovered a few years ago in Bing Crosby's basement. And a shot of that fan who, if you didn't see his smile, looks like he's about to mug Mazeroski.

Look at the bald guy's hat. He was either a cabby or a stadium usher.

Come-on, finish that color work. That card is looking great! When making cards that contain game action I always seem to prefer the horizontal view.

Possible tip that may not even apply: If you are working in layers make the skin layer semi transparent, and see how that looks.

I think I know what you're talking about. The images on a lot of those Topps hand colored cards from the 50's and early 60's have this part cartoon - part photograph look to them. Especially the faces. Like this:

[fimg=400]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rySENsN7QRI/VEaYYrZk3vI/AAAAAAAAX2c/ZNhNmGV2v5w/s1600/IMAG0837.jpg[/fimg][fimg=555]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O0ww-HBh0no/Usgu6s3kBnI/AAAAAAAAX3I/9Xe1G3YXCDE/s1600/IMAG0841.jpg[/fimg]

That's what I was going for. Actually, I've been trying to get that particular look ever since I started doing these cards, with only some progress. I know that I colored the faces on that Maz card heavier than I should've, but I was too lazy to fix it. I'll fix it when I get around to adding some more color.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I love those old cards. I tried to do up the look with mixed results.
Sometimes I do crazy stuff and I added "texture" to the grass on these. It supposed to simulate brush strokes but it looks more like a green stucco wall.

[fimg=400:2ghlukmn]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B1jNYNmC1Fw/U9yP_VCYM3I/AAAAAAAAS3g/jSr7-nfryLY-6qOIVCThYsjbDKP7yJbfACCo/s650/btHUSTLED-z14.png[/fimg:2ghlukmn]

I like how the texture on this one came out but there's like no detail to the figures.
I put an inner bevel on them. Why? I told ya I do crazy stuff. Maybe you can tell that's Staub and Cleon.
And maybe Rusty's holding Yogi's hand. Maybe this card could have used some more work.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Those Mets-Reds cards are great. Even if they're not exactly like the Topps Baseball Thrills, they stand up on their own. That there's hardly any detail in those faces is my favorite part of those style cards. Those faces are like one big blob of thick pink color and a coupl'a dots and a dash. And yet there's enough context that you know who the faces belong too. Whered'ja get that source picture of the Met contingent marching out to the outfield to calm down the angry Mets fans?

Here's an update on the Maz HR card. A little more coloring, and another cartoon-photo attempt. It's not Topps 50's style but it's a style.

IIRC the image of the Mets walking was a screengrab from a news report, or some such clip.

Quality, horrendous. But I needed a card for that event. If it ain't out there, I'll create it. I have no shame.

What the hell did Staub need his bat for? The home town fans were on his side.

Here's some stucco. Don't go flinging this card around or you're liable to take somebody's eye out.

Staub was due up in the bottom of the fifth. He was getting ready when Berra called on thin to join the diplomatic corps. Things are getting ugly, he's not going to leave the tools of his trade behind.

Besides, I think it works better that way. If they all come out in battle gear, it only fires the fans up more. If none of them do, then the mob doesn't know they mean business. But a pleading Mays and an armed and dangerous Staub sort of works on fans like a good cop/bad cop dynamic.

Here's the last one, then I'm putting this card in storage. I took the stucco off of the people and played around with the shading on the remaining stucco. This, I think, gives the Maz image somewhat of a 3-D effect.

I bought a bunch of Topps Opening Day packs, and was happily surprised to see Matt Reynolds get a card. I can't think of too many times the Mets have had a guy get a card before ever appearing in a game. Maybe one of those cards with multiple players. But Matt gets a card to himself.

I like the Opening Day set. Don't mind the logo -- and appreciate that there is no gold foil!

Most of the subsets are weak -- I'd rather have a regular player card. But I love the mascots. Two teams so far -- Braves and Athletics -- have mascots with the very creative name of "Mascot."

I keep getting Reynolds in my packs. Let me know if you want one. I have to assume he'll be in the second series.

My beef is the Bowman sets. I subscribe -- if that's the right word -- to a store in Iowa that builds team sets and sends them out every couple of months. It seems like year in and year out, the Bowman sets are awful. And it seems like there are three or four variations of the sets -- a Chrome version, and so on.

They're not as bad as the new Donruss sets -- without the team logos on them. But those Bowman sets can do away.

I'm not a fan of all the special versions and all that. It makes the hobby into something that it shouldn't be. I still kinda dig it when I get one though.

And I cannot stomach cards that cannot use logos and whatnot. I'm simply not interested in them. I collected heavy in the past (& I'd put up with that kinda shit on Hostess cards or the like) but not at all during the days Topps took over the market and I don't understand how that was allowed to happen. Well, I do, money, but I don't think that should be allowed to happen if another company is willing to spend the same as Topps for the privilege of using the logos. I don't think that's right.

Topps Heritage, at least 1967 (the one I'd been waiting on since the concept was introduced), is weirdest when it's a player on a team that didn't exist in the year in question. ANGELS looks right, for example. BLUE JAYS doesn't.

A friend suggested perhaps teams that didn't exist in the years that are being replicated should have simply been left out until they were born. Probably wouldn't have gone over, but that's pretty damn authentic.

That's problematic territory.

Retrofit cards challenge us to accept (and often delight in) hairstyles, positions, ethinicities (at least at the big league level), and more that didn't exist in the time of the publication of the original set. The whole enterprise is a big exercise of what-if. It forces the artists and the collectors to adapt, and that's most of the fun, isn't it?

Both those cards have logos. They're on the uniforms. What Donruss has had to do in recent years is airbrush off all the logos on caps and jerseys because the company doesn't have a license from MLB. Card manufacturers must have two deals, one with the players union to run images of the players, and one with MLB to use logos. Topps has an exclusive deal with MLB at this point. Other companies can strike deals with the union. You get stuff like this:

That's just it. Collect what you want and just pretend the other stuff doesn't exist. I find that pulling the parallels and short prints I don't want give me ammunition for trades and/or eBay sales to get the things I do want, though.

Topps has largely done very well with the Heritage sets -- replicating errors, card numbering parallels, etc -- although for some reason, they can never quite get some of it exactly correct. It's nitpicky, but if you're going to go through the exercise of making the set, spend the extra time to make sure the fonts are right.

No way.

Yea, the logo on the border is one thing, and it's not totally necessary. But the uni logos and team name and the interlocking NY--if you can't show that you can't properly represent my team, which has the best logo and name and NY thing known to man and the universe.

Edgy MD
May 03 2016 09:24 PM
Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Insignia is what we call the "NY thing."

It's confusing, because often enough the insignia and logo double for one another. I tend to think of the "logo" as the thing that used to be painted in the on-deck circle. But teams tend to have three logos:
[list=1][*]circular logo/shoulder patch/on-deck circle[/*:m]
[*]insignia[/*:m]
[*]breastplate

... and variations on those three.[/*:m][/list:o]

When they start using them interchangeably, I think it indicates a lack of faith in their trademarks. Making your breastplate double as your main logo is some weak stuff, Brewers! (Then again, the Mets incorporate their breastplate into the skyline logo.)

A lot of teams feature their mascot in the oft-baseball-shaped circular logo/shoulder patch/on-deck circle. If not, the mascot can become a fourth logo.

Maybe it looks better in your hands. But yea, looks like a great photo that someone stuck stuff on. I hope it's the scan that makes the name & logo look gray like that.

So Opening Day has a second series? This makes no sense to me. I thought it was a little set to celebrate the opening of the season, a one off. I think that's a bit much having more than one series of OD. I'm afraid they are watering it all down in a way, all the different types of cards. But, if we buy 'em, they will sell them. That was the big hurdle for the tNOW card. I don't want to support that type of thing in the hobby (I bet this also crossed your mind Seawolf). But when it comes to the Mets I go a little nutty sometimes and caught up in the glow from that HR I had to have that Mets card.

Now these cards pictured- I love em all! But I have to step back and say, wait a minute. Variations, parallels, cards w/a lil glow highlight that you can barely see (if you bother to look 4 it),...things are getting out of hand. At least at 2 to 3 bucks a pack.

And after all that it's going to be soooo hard not to get an OD blister next time in Target. I can only hope they have none in stock.

Opening Day sets include cards from the first series of the base set and also cards from the yet-to-be-released second series of the base set, all without foil and the Opening Day logo. It's like a bridge between the two series.

I also got a Matz...rainbow? I dunno what it it. A special card. It's nice. Got the Conforto. No Reynolds yet, and he was numero uno on my wish list.

I got a Wacky Pack. What is a SNAP-BACK? That sticker backs usually have a puzzle piece but this one has a picture of a camel and says "SNAP-BACK/ Ludlow/ to remove SNAP-BACK online"..

Then nuthin.

Googling it. Did I win a baseball cap?

Now if I had won a baseball cap, even a cheap shitty Bazooka Joe one they have on Ebay(called SNAP-BACKs), I would have been thrilled and gone around praising Topps. But this is just another version of the sticker with a camel on the back? Weak.

I got the OD Mets Celebration. Very niiiiice card.

There is a Thor 2 HR NOW card just released. It's very nice but I can no longer support this type of thing. Or just the price, I guess. For four bucks--actually I'd probably still be bitching. I bitch about packs being 3 dollars! If one of my brother's wants to get this ball rolling I might jump in but I will not instigate the purchase. I must make my stand.

And the Colon HR was history. This was....gah.

It's David Wright and for all we know....ugh, I ain't gonna say it. But I do have a Wright collection.

The way to go is switch it around. Take advantage of them. Get 20 for $70 and sell them on Ebay. I can't be bothered nor should I be tying up my $$ that way. I see the Colons going for $25 on average. Even if you only get 5 Wright cards that's a pretty nice mark up.

I think they're making many many of these cards. Not just "historic" moments, but anything that any fan anywhere might consider special. So they're exploiting fans of all 30 teams.

No piece of cardboard is worth $10 to me. Not unless it will get me $10 off my next grocery purchase.

A few years ago, Upper Deck came out with "Documentary" sets for a few select big market teams, including the Mets. Each team set consisted of 162 cards, one for each game of the season -- the goal being to "document" each game played by the carded team. The back of the cards had a summary of the game depicted by the particular card.

[fimg=266]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/772/Jose-Reyes.jpg?id=fcce5647-6fcd-4ca5-9096-c99e6dd20230&size=zoom&side=back[/fimg]

It was an ambitious set that, I thought, lacked execution. The photos on the card fronts were random and didn't correspond to the game in question. Also, the images repeated: I'd say that only about a dozen images were used to fill the entire 162 Met set.

[fimg=255]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/775/Pedro-Martinez.jpg?id=54f9db78-3bb5-42ec-a517-e1527ce26233&size=zoom[/fimg] [fimg=255]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/175/Pedro-Martinez.jpg?id=34107d79-25b7-4228-96f5-2529bed0676c&size=zoom[/fimg]

Overall, I'd say that the set was a disappointment, because of the photographs.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

This ToppsNOW stuff presents an interesting question.

These cards will be considered rare because of the limited printing run. So, the cards are printed to order, and when the time limit expires they halt the presses and the cards done, finis. Usually it is a 24 hour period from when they announce that the card is available to when they stop the printing.

Some cards are more popular than others, and this is reflected by the amount ordered. The Bartolo Colon HR card was the best selling ToppsNOW card ever. There were 8,826 Colon HR cards were sold before the printing cutoff. Only two other cards in the (so far) 126 card set topped the 2000 mark. Matt Scherzer's 20K game ( 3746) and Noah Syndergaard's 2 HR game (3670).

The average printing run for a ToppsNOW card looks to be somewhere between 500 and 600 a card. The week before Colon hit the HR he was pictured on another ToppsNOW card, this one commemorating his passing Pedro on the all-time wins list. 298 of these Colon cards were sold before the printing cutoff.

And this poses the question.

Which card will be worth more one hundred years from now? The one that was the in the highest demand now, and over 8000 circulated: the Colon HR? Or the Colon/Pedro WINS card, of which only 298 exist?

The issue of demand & supply is a factor in overall worth, but rarity is also a factor. This is a new situation for a card collector because the most unwanted cards in this set will have the least amount of copies. How does this affect thier worth?

Maybe using Colon is a bad example. What if the card that only had 300 printed was a Mike Trout or Bryce Harper?

I guess what it will come down to is what is in demand in the future. But simple logic dictates the the cards that only had 100 printed should be worth more than a card that got 8000 copies into circulation.

What if in 100 years someone is trying to complete this set from scratch? Could common cards end up being worth more than..., well none of these are common cards I suppose, but could a Joe Shmoe card be worth more than a Mike Trout, because Trouts card sold 3000 and Joe Shmoe only sold 62?

On a side note:
There is a Trevor Story ToppsNOW card that includes the Topps ROOKIE symbol (actually more than one). It's a highlight card and not a player card, but could this possibly end up being considered Story's rookie card? I really do not like that they are putting the rookie symbol on any ToppsNOW cards, because to me these are highlight cards.

I have zero interest in collecting all ToppsNOW Mets. Well, not zero, but I won't be doing it at $9.99 a card (I have the Colon HR and Wright walkoff single). I don't think I'm that far back into the hobby where something like trading cards is feasible, but it's a possibility. I have bought a decent amount of cards the last three years.

So this checklist is here for any Mets card collector who might be looking for this info.

I would guess it would be a card that features a player that's still (relatively) well-known in 2116. And that probably won't be Bartolo Colon.

I don't know if any card produced today will have much value years from now. There's just so many, and so many that are (allegedly) rare.

Tom Seaver has just one real rookie card. There are probably more than 200 Mike Trout rookie cards, especially when you include the inserts, parallel versions and so on. I can look at the Seaver card and instantly recognize it for what is is -- the 1967 Topps Tom Seaver rookie. Will people be able to look at one of those Trout cards and say, "Hey, that's the Trout rookie Bowman refractor blue border parallel that I've been looking for? Because I already have in my collection the green and red border refractor versions and need the blue to complete my set."

I just bought it and I am very disappointed with myself. Seriously. I have to stick to my guns with this. It's my own personal protest. If everyone did the same thing and stopped buying them at $9.99, that price would go down, or at least I'd like to think it would. All I can do is my part.

The Bart: Got it because it was such a great Mets moment, also Metropolitan historical & MLB history.

The Wright: I didn't want to say this then, but we may as well face the possibility, this could be one of Wright last baseball cards and it will be (super?) rare by design.

The deGrom: I got back into baseball cards (always bought a few packs but started buying blisters and such) around 2012. Like with Gooden in the 1984, Matt Harvey's rook card drew me back in. So I was able to collect all these new Mets rook pitchers cards.

deGrom, Thor, Matz, Wheeler, & Harvey. I have started a nice collection for each. I won't get obsessive. Can't afford to. If I get the Topps parallel or the real rare/expensive black border version in a pack, great. But I won't go crazy. I'm interested in the players base set rookie, anything else is gravy.

So I got the deGrom because it was a HUGE personal milestone for him to pitch a complete game and it will be the gem of my deGrom collection. At least until he pitches his no-no.

OE: ^apparently I'm trying to justify these purchases to myself.
Next time I talk about a ToppsNOW card yell at me and tell me to stick to my guns!

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

I went for the 5 card deal. Looks like only 2 of my brothers want one so I will have some extras.
I also have 2 extra of the Wright clutch walk-off card, if anyone wants to make a trade.
Of course, I'm only interested in Mets cards, and preferably any ToppsNOW card that concerns the Mets. I have purchased 3:
>Colon HR (May 7th)
> Wright Walk-off (May 21)
>deGrom 1 hitter (July 17)

Yikes, I just noticed they have "relic" ToppsNOW cards.
There's a Mookie Betts relic card that includes a piece of his bat.
There's a bunch, color variations (or something). All crazy priced, one going for $699.99.
That's fuckin' insane.

I wonder if the bat pieces are from the bat he hit the three homers with
(the card commemorates that, 2nd time this season Mookie blasted 3 kaBOOMs).'
That would be superkool and might merit a crazy price. But still.

If you wanna get into collecting baseball cards these days you better be rich.

Nope. There are quite a few Mets ToppsNOW cards I didn't even try to get.

I'd like that Colon, and the Mets /Yankees Colon. Since I have the Colon HR card it would be a nice. But not nine-ninty-nine-nice.

If Seaver wasn't on that last one I would have easily passed. I don't consider these to be regular issue circulated baseball cards.
These are bonus babies.

You could say the same about deGroms one hitter.
But when a Mets on a card it gets a 5 out of 10 outta the gate.
When it's quite possibly one of the last Wright cards from
Topps and also a limited print the acquisition is a no brainer.

When I consider it worth it I let them get me. Hook, line, & sinker.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Nolan Ryan's 1972 Topps card was an air-brush job -- an Angel logo painted over a Mets cap and Mets home pinstripes still visible -- the jersey cropped just below the neckline to conceal the Mets word-mark . Ryan's card appeared in Topps 1st series and so long as Topps was commited to releasing Ryan's card in that first serties, there was no time to produce a Ryan card in a proper Angels uniform given the technology of the day insofar as the Ryan trade occurred in December of 1971.

Ryan's trade partner Jim Fregosi's card also appeared in that 1st series. But Fregosi appeared as an Angel rather than as an airbrushed Met.

Fregosi would also appear in that year's high card numbered Traded set as a Met. Perhaps Topps had determined which players would appear in the traded subset early on and so that's why Fregosi's base card was with his former team. This theory sounds correct because Ryan was not included in the traded set and before the 1972 season, Ryan was a mediocre pitcher, albeit with baseball's fastest fastball. So it made a lot of sense for Ryan to be excluded from that traded set, which for the most part, was made of stars and former stars.

This week, Topps released an image of what undoubtedly would've been used for Fregosi's airbrushed '72 base card had Topps decided not to include Fregosi in the traded set:

This is interesting.

A collector bought a ToppsNOW card because the card pictured by Topps contained an error (wrong first name of player). The guys specialty is error cards. Topps noticed the error early in the run and corrected it (316 error versions released), then mailed the customer the corrected version. He wanted the error version. They would not give it to him. He sued.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

It's a sub series, I guess, because I see "CALL UP" is included for other cards on the checklist .

I decided I would get the card and I got to the webpage today before it expired, but got sidetracked. When I got back they had pulled it. So I missed out but no feeling of regret. Just meh. The hobby is getting so crazy. They sold 613 copies of TJs card. This will be a ultra rare Rivera card.

And talk about crazy. I was talking to my brother about Topps BUNT and folks take these cards very seriously. And valuable. My brother got a super rare 1/25 Trout/Aaron autographed card. Beautiful looking. But a digital card. Digital images of the autographs. Not real. Can only be viewed on a screen through the app.

My brother traded the card to another collector for 6 Mets BUNT cards, awesome looking (DIGITAL! NOT REAL!) cards that included Piazza relic and uni patch cards. A piece of his bat, and a piece from his uni, the M in Mets (koolest). Looks fantastic. BUT IT"S NOT REAL! Its a picture of these things. And folks are really into it. Into possessing these digital images.

I find this kinda wacky.

Also something my brother said and I agree: If these ToppsNOW cards are really limited run they should be stamped with the number, like for TJ they'd have a 5/613 on the card. I mean, we pay 10 bucks for a single card. Go that extra step.

Oh, and good thing I no longer collect everything that has "Mets" on it:

I've been buying the Bunt cards -- the cardboard versions. They're less expensive than the base brand and I kinda like the design. It's a mix of current and past stars, so Mets in the set include Gooden Straw and Piazza. I'm assuming Seaver is in there, but I haven't pulled one yet. I did get a cool Seaver at Shea insert card.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

My brother said they have the BUNT cards at Target. I'll check em out.

Who do they have in mind to buy these cards? The Rockefellers? (omg, I'm so old!)

1 case has 4 boxes, 1 pack per box, 5 cards per pack.
Price per case=$4000, now on sale for $2,500.
Insane. Nice looking....but insane. These are numbered.

Re: 2016 Baseball Cards

Bastages. I made two cards for the Grandy's game (1 for each HR) but they aren't done yet.

This is nice. Not even contemplating this one though.

Nice. Mets history. Nothing for the walkoff. Yet.
The historic one would appeal to me more if I were to indulge myself. I won't.

If the Mets secure the NL flag they will (hopefully) have a ToppsNOW team set, as has been released for the Cubs.
And this would be a must have for me. 15 cards. Fiddy bucks. Bas sTa Ges. This though, a Metset for the post, limited....I feel it'll be worth the $50.

It's great though, that there are such things to celebrate.
I'll celebrate for free with these:

It amazes me that people are willing to pay ten dollars for a single, brand-new baseball card.

Part of me thinks that all of these cards should be rounded up, put in a pile, and set on fire, like they do with rhino horns and elephant tusks that have been reclaimed from poachers.

Which part?
And what do the other parts say?

My left nostril thinks those cards are pretty cool, but the rest of my body thinks that this mass production of ten-dollar baseball cards is a scam and I wish I had a cut of it.

That's the thing with these. If Topps sticks to their guns, and they better cause I know at least one person who will sue them if they don't, and these are printed according to demand, then these cards are not produced on a massive scale. This makes them very desirable to serious collectors. Unfortunately, only to serious collectors w/$$ to burn or rich kids, if kids even bother w/baseball cards these days.

This card below, according to Topps only 188 were printed. Or maybe I should say distributed, because I doubt they shut down the press @188 on the bone. In any case, a serious Young collector (his mom probly bought 100 of em) might consider this card a prized possession in the players card collection.

Even the Colon HR card, which last time I checked was the best selling ToppsNOW card of all time at 8,826, is a very limited number in relation to the number of card collectors out there.

The $$ is the problem with these. They have decided that they'd rather sell a lesser amount of cards for more $$, as opposed to making them cost less so more people will buy them. And I imagine they are selling good enough that they don't give a rats ass what I think about the price and how they are screwing over the less fortunate.

All this card cost me is about 40 minutes of my time.

Yeah, fifty bucks is about forty bucks too much for that set, unfortunately. Sorry, Topps.
