What was the text or phrase on the sign that Karl "The Sign Man" Erhardt held up after the last out was made in the Mets pennant clinching 1973 playoff game against the Reds?

That was Erhardt's sign after the last out of the '69 WS was recorded.

Youse are gonna hafta up your games to win this quiz. Erhardt's sign was a lot more clevererer than the stuff youse are coming up with.

Here's a hint: Karl's sign was topical. It wouldn't have worked in the WS, for example.

You're not reading the clues properly. I hinted that Erhardt's sign was topical. A "PETE ROSE IS AN ASSHOLE" sign, on the other hand, is universal, and would work just as well whether the Mets opponents are the Reds, or, say, the Padres. Let's turn this quiz into a Wheel of Fortune variant. The first word in Erhardt's sign was .... "BIG".

I should know this because I was there and he wasn't that far from me in game 5, after I snuck down to box. But I don't recall seeing him.

If you were that close, then maybe you're in my picture. Because when I get around to posting the answer to this quiz, I'll post an accompanying picture that includes Erhardt's sign as well as fans storming the field in front of the Reds dugout.

OO,kool. I hope someday there is video discovered of the last few innings. Cause I know for sure I was shown on TV during that time.

How did you get on the field? Did you jump onto the field from the visiting dugout roof?
|
Zvon Feb 04 2016 12:36 AM Re: Quickie Quiz (Another) |
I look for myself in photos of game 5 and sometimes I think I see me. I have no real recollection of what I wore, only of the way I usually dressed at that age. At the very end I was almost parallel with 3rd base, in the makeshift extended wooden box section. I initially went toward 3rd base, shifted down the line to home plate and then ran to the mound. On the TV broadcast you can see me in the Reds dugout much earlier during the delay of game when the wooden partitions collapsed and fans spilt out on to the field.

Reenact it when the Reds are in town this summer and we'll see if we can find you on the field THEN.
|
batmagadanleadoff Feb 04 2016 12:54 AM Re: Quickie Quiz (Another) |
The photo I'll post at the end of this quiz looks like it was taken from around the Mets on deck circle pointing towards the Reds dugout. Most of the foreground is the front of the portion of the Reds dugout that's closer to home plate rather than third base. The fans already on the field aren't too densely packed in yet, so it appears that the photo was shot right after, or even right before, the last out was officially recorded.

Who's the guy in the Mets dugout standing -- lined up in the photo behind a crouching Mays -- with the glasses with the plastic looking frames? I can't think of anybody on the '73 WS roster who even remotely looks like that Met.

I'll bet anything that the Met directly behind was extremely pissed that his view of the play was totally blocked by the bat boy.

WOW! What a photo! I was literally one of the first to hit the field. No one was in front of me at the time. So I'm probably just off to the right. Still a great photo.

Zvon Feb 08 2016 12:44 AM Re: Quickie Quiz (Another) |
If that red mark is the end of the dugout, I was right behind that guys head. I don't recall if the wooden containment wall fell again on the last out, but since it fell earlier I figure it did again. I was right up against it at the last out, literally one of the first to set foot on the field. We didn't just run out onto the field. We burst out onto the field like a freakin' explosion. I didn't make a move forward, I was projected forward, out onto the field.
