Memories of Tyler Clippard

A generally productive piece of the bullpen during the postseason run.

But mostly I'll remember the glasses. And the great Clip Art image that Zvon created (even though I can't find it right now).

Often screwed us before he was a Met and often screwed us after.

Worked slower than Steve Traschsel in shackles.

Eff him.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

A Met enemy who tried to insinuate himself into the story by running off a sweet almost-scoreless run after his acquisition, giving up like one earned run in his first 20 innings. Then he absolutely and routinely coughed it up in the post-season.

As such, he's pretty much cemented into my mind as a white Guillermo Mota, and I fully expect him to get popped for PEDs within a year.

Omar would have thrown him a two-year deal, and ended up eating it.

My best Clippard memory is probably his MLB debut with the Bronx team against us. As a Met, he was pretty good right up until he wasn't.

This.

And the glasses kinda sucked, too. Like shooting-range half-goggles. If you're going glasses, go full-on Rambis/Henke, man.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

He didn't wear glasses during the National Anthem, which always made him somewhat unrecognizable.

Jeeze, I was trying to think of something to add and I forgot I made that. Well, ^ that.

Clippy was an important factor for a very short, but needed, period of time. Then he ran out of gas. Good luck out there Clippard!

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

Maybe not the goofiest looking guy ever to play for the Mets, but certainly in the group photo.

That's all I remember about him.

Even though he played for the Mets, I will always remember him as a Yank and Nat facing the Mets more than any time he pitched for us.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

His arrival was yuuuge, to put it in the contemporary political vernacular. Lost, perhaps, in the excitement over Cespedes and giddiness over Flores and the power barrage that buried the Nationals as July became August and second place became first place was how enormous the bullpen was in the series against Washington: 8 2/3 innings, 0 R. Clippard was a big part of that performance and, more generally, the stabilization of the bullpen.

But his last two batters as a Met, in Game Four against the Royals, will stay with me in unwanted fashion for quite a while. That's why, though I wish him well, I'm not sorry to see him go.

The glasses. He had his moments, good and bad.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

I'm not wishing him well so long as he's pitching for a division rival.

Sorry - I just can't.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

My bad - I conflated him with Torres, who's going to Atlanta.

Fine - good luck Clippy except when the Mets play the Snakes.

We're gonna light him up like the friggin' Shea scoreboard.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

Maybe, but the extra-divisional schedule being what it is, the Mets'll likely not get a dozen innings against him over the two years.

He's not done being good (hell, Putz wasn't even quite done when he left), but I imagine he'll be productive over maybe half of his contract. They can get his production out of somebody with roster flexibility.

Re: Memories of Tyler Clippard

Stabilized the back end of the bullpen in August, exactly when it was needed. Went wobbly after that but was at his best at a critical moment in the season.
