What's on Your TV in 2016

MOZART IN THE JUNGLE (Amazon Prime) won a bunch of Golden Globes. Ensemble comedy-drama following a NYC symphony that gets a charismatic new conductor, Rodrigo. He's terrific, actor and character, and I like the idea of a "workplace" show based on creatives: They spend their time worried about their union contract and their standing with their peers, I like that bit. Lola Kirke (daughter of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, doncha know) is the young oboeist trying to break in who becomes the conductor's assistant. She's a sneaky hot Plan Jane.

I preferred season 1 a little vs. season 2 but recommended.

I've been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer because it's fun and partly for a trivia game in August. It's also easy to watch in 5 minute increments as you pause to chase a toddler out of the room before she pulls the cats tail, something I don't think Breaking Bad would be conducive to.

My husband has been watching the Pennsylvania Farm Show while I listen while reading. But I watched the bunny hopping and yarn making with him

We were disappointed because they didn't have the fancy chickens this year, b/c of avian flu.

We just finished off Jessica Jones the other day. (I liked it a lot!) And we have a couple of more episodes of The Man in the High Castle remaining. Also, Shameless resumed this week on Showtime. That show is always fun.

I assure you that Wisconsinites are not all dumbasses and boobs as Netflix's Making of a Murderer might have you believe.

There's good stuff in the doc series about the questionable accusation of murder and a possible police conspiracy. The show makes it seem like this was a very high publicity trial, but I lived about 125 miles from where it took place and don't remember hearing ANYTHING about it while it was going on.

I started watching Broadchurch on Netflix. It's a British mystery/police procedural series with a lot of Doctor Who alumni on both sides of the camera.

The acting is great, the cinematography is beautiful, and it's the rare mystery where characters show the real emotional devastation of someone being murdered (in this case an 11-year-old boy).

Re: What's on Your TV in 2016

i've watched season 2 of TRANSPARENT (i've got a love/hate relationship with this show) and MOZART IN THE JUNGLE (loved the 1st season; liked the 2nd), seasons 1-2 of HOUSE OF LIES (This is a great show, but i'm not going to pay Amazon more to watch seasons 3-4), season 1 of THE LEAGUE (everybody told me i'd love it but i didn't; every one of these guys is an a-hole), and i just started NURSE JACKIE (which i love so far). Also, i've been re-watching WEST WING with my wife and son (he's never seen it before and really likes it), and he and I are re-watching the AVATAR series, just because.

I'm planning on watching LUTHER and BROADCHURCH at some point. But now, i'm anxiously biding my time, waiting for season 5 of GAME OF THRONES to begin, and the 2nd seasons of DAREDEVIL and MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, both of which were among the best new shows i saw last year.

I watched Nurse Jackie during its run on Showtime and I really liked it too. Edie Falco is just great on that show.

I'm also eagerly awaiting Daredevil. And I'm eagerly awaiting word on when to expect the Luke Cage series. (My guess is July, but that's not based on anything more than a hunch.) Oh, and season two of Better Call Saul isn't far off either.

I'm probably gonna try Mozart and Broadchurch. I also started recording Colony last night but it might be a while before I get around to it.

The showrunner for Broadchurch will be taking over Doctor Who. Moffat quits. No new Who's in 2016. :(

MAD DOGS anyone?

4 college buds in their early 40s reunite at the waterfront Belize estate of a wealthy 5th friend, when hijinx ensue.

Black comedy-drama that's sort of high-stakes Survivor, starring Christopher Moltisanti and that guy from THAT THING YOU DO (also Dad in WIMPY KID movies) but is really an elaborate means of getting into an examination of why guys are the way they are.

Trailer is largely spoiler free but you might want to watch the 1st episode yourself to get the full effect of its visual kung-fu.

It's not all great but parts of it will cause pants full of terror-shit and ROFL-piss.

The opening credits of Ed were filmed in Westfield, NJ. They returned to the town to film exterior shots on occasion, too. They never filmed in Scotch Plains.

Westfield IS pretty telegenic; it also made a memorable appearance on "America's Most Wanted" back in the nineties as the setting for John List's cold-blooded murder of his entire family.

Scotch Plains never showed up there, either.

Part one of The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was excellent.
Anyone around then remembers the details as they were disclosed, but to see how things looked from the police perspective early on, as events took place, was very powerful and compelling. Excellent performances by all.

I watched it. I hated the way they worked the Kardashian kids into the script. They're totally irrelevant and superfluous to the story. It was such an obvious contrivance the way it was done, too --- a shameless namedropping celebrity grab. If you can even call 'em celebrities. Which I guess they are in today's world.

I thought it was pretty good, not quite excellent. I liked Cuba Gooding, but thought Travolta and David Schwimmer were a bit over the top. And the Kardashian girls stuff was ridiculous, as stated by BML.

Things I didn't know/remember: OJ yelling at a lady from the Bronco the night of the killings. Chris Darden dislike of the DAs office.

I'll probably keep watching though. I'm sure Nathan Lane will rock as F. Lee Bailey.

On the other hand, maybe it was symbolically fitting that the Kardashian girls were worked into the script. One could argue that the whole OJ murder saga was the birth of reality TV.

Well you know the Niners better than me, but…OJ came to Niners in 1978. In 1981 they won the Super Bowl, so he couldn't have crippled the franchise that much. I mean, if sucking the year they picked up OJ led to them hiring Bill Walsh*, it's all good, right?

You're not off. I knew that when I wrote the post. I felt like writing it anyway. The Niners first Super Bowl victory was remarkable in many ways. As you noted, just a few years before, they were as bad as an expansion team ... mismanaged ... the roster would be turned over almost entirely.

I didn't think it possible.
I considered O.J. 100% guilty back when it happened. Everyone did. You watch this and you'll think he's 150% guilty. 1000% guilty! I didn't want to watch or get into this. I couldn't imagine any way they could make this interesting to me. I had it on while doing some color work and it pulled me in.

Pt. one starts with the discovery of the bodies and ends when OJ jumps in the Bronco and takes off. I don't even know how many episodes this involves (it's a mini series, right?) but I will continue to tune in.

I've long had this fantasy concerning people who insisted (still insist?) that OJ was/is innocent.
It involves approaching an OJ supporter with one large envelope in each hand. Envelope #1 contains [u:3n0szvw8]definitive proof[/u:3n0szvw8] of his guilt or innocence; the other contains [u:3n0szvw8]one million dollars[/u:3n0szvw8]. And then you simply make a deal with him/her that if they can correctly guess the answer in Envelope #1 they get to keep the contents of #2.

NOW let's see how tightly they hang onto their claim that he didn't do it!

SPOILER CITY[/bigpurple]

I wanted to make that red but the font colour thing is not working for me^

I guess I'm a fanatical X-Files fan. I was very into it when it was on. Watched em all, know the mythology, saw the movies. Was thrilled about the show returning. But only 6? If they were all 90 minutes I'd feel better about it. But 6 one hour eps? Okay, they better be 6 classics.

The first two (on successive nights) were good and solid. Great to see em back. The Roswell crash and the hidden alien craft were very kool. The guy playing the TV host (name escapes me ATM) was very good, as was the girl from The Americans (she was a Ruskie) was excellent in her role as an abductee. These could be considered mythology episodes but they could also stand alone. Loved em.

The third was a good typical X-Files episode, where some person has some kinda strange ability and some other person ends up dead. Fox & Scully get back to their old bantering, another nice thing to see. Their son William comes up. They gave him away for adoption way back when. They've touched on him a few times, so I have to imagine that there will be some type of resolution there, or maybe even a meeting, which would be great.

The next one was supposed to be a comic relief one. Every once in awhile they'd do a funny one and more than not they were great episodes.
This one was interesting and well played, but not really that funny. It least not to me. Let me put it this way: if they are only making 6 episodes it wasn't funny enough to be one. And the guy who wrote this has written some X-Files classics, but this isn't one.
The wolfguy, Rhys Darby, is a very funny comedian. I've seen him in other things. But in large doses he gets on my nerves, as he did in this ep.

Ep05 was a kool one, with the guy ripping arms off and allAdat. The big bad monster ends up being a figment of someones imagination. Nice X-Filey stuff. Again, their son William comes up in some very heavy scenes with Dana (and of course with Dana's mom).

This last one was only disappointing because there is only one left. And I wished they found a better way to get The Lone Gunman back in, instead of a non speaking drug-flashed 5 frame shot of em. The two new agents? I didn't want to like them in case they try to spin em off into a new X-Files, but I ended up liking them, a credit to their performances. This was a good one with some funny banter between everyone. But still, only 6 eps? Gimme better than good.

The finale will be a continuation of the first two parter, and it should be better than good. I don't know if they are wettin' our whistle for a movie or what, another 6 next year? Well, I shouldn't complain. It is nice seeing new X-Files. I think both look great even with Anderson' tight foreheadskin (& whatever's going on there).

I don't know whether they're committed to another season after this one or not, but it almost feels like they're building the tension towards a tie-up all the loose ends type of conclusion even with 10 episodes still left in this batch.
As it was they had to hide Russell's ever-increasing pregnancy during the filming of this season although seeing as how she -- or actually 'they' since it's Rhys's too -- are due like any day now she could certainly be back in fighting trim (literally in her case) if/when they were to start shooting again later this year for new shows next spring.

Tonight's the finale of You, Me, and the Apocalypse. The show started out as a black comedy, but has grown into a fascinating drama with some wildly funny bits. It's a joint NBC-SKY! (UK) production, with a neat mix of US and UK actors, including Rob Lowe, Jenna Fischer, Meagan Mullany (looking nothing like she did in Will & Grac), Diana Rigg, and Karla Crome (from Misfits). NBC has the entire series so far on its website; you should check it out.

Still loving Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which also had moved beyond humor as the characters grown. The songs are still the funniest things on TV these days:

Though when she gets serious, it can be heartbreaking (she's singing about herself, BTW):

Season 2 of CATASTROPHE: Very, very funny even as it gets more "serious." The trailer makes it seem all about sex. It's plenty raunchy but a lot more than that.

I hate that its only 6 eps. Done already!

* This is the worst SURVIVOR season in a long time, populated with hateful sexist moron egomaniacs who haven't gotten their comeuppance yet. Plus they voted out all the attractive women right away.

It's a good show. I've only seen the first episode of season two so far. I have to say, their indifference to their dog annoyed me.

Maybe the best thing "Saul" does is the same thing Michael Mann does at his best: reveal character through work. Those montages-- Kim's toiling to dig herself out of doc-review purgatory, the Customs check, Jimmy's shoe-leather lawyerin'-- are fantastic characterization, and gorgeous to watch.

LAID on Netflix. An Australian comedy about a woman whose ex-boyfriends are all dying, in random ways, in the order in which she slept with them. She is seeking a cure for her deadly vagina so she can live happily ever after with her current love. She's got a kooky best friend, wacky parents, etc. It's actually very funny.

We're watching Ken Burns' two-part miniseries on Jackie Robinson. Excellent storytelling and material, as you would expect.

Re: What's on Your TV in 2016

So I finished the entire run of DOWNTON ABBEY last night. ymmv, but probably could have bailed on it sooner as it kinda got more melodramatic all the time -- unbearably so sometimes. I was also expecting a very different closing arc than I got* so was disappointed in that.

That said, the first 2 seasons were super, I was surprised how engrossed I became in a show I was sure I couldn't give a shit about. But the actors and sets were quite beautiful, and the universe the show created was great.

The Dowager Countess was awesome (and I loved her back-and-forth with Isobel, also a great character). Mary was such a tremendous bitch but I could Not. Stop. Looking. At. Her. Sybill was a cuteypie too.

(Spoiler-ish below)
-------
* I was certain this was a show about the "fall" of the House, especially considering a) How many times an episode (112, I think) someone remarked how "times were changing!" and also, what a well-meaning idiot Lord Grantham was: continually made bad investments, basically killed his daughter, screwed up his relationship with his wife and her money over and over, etc. I wanted the show to end with them, not in poverty exactly, but with the estate hacked up, their power diminished, and the servants moving on, although we got a little of that.

Netflix series, STRANGER THINGS.

Wicked awesome, dudes. Its like FREAKS & GEEKS meets E.T., with a smidge of NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST thrown in for seasoning. Oh, and X-Files... and GOONIES... and LOST BOYS; it's all very 1980s comedy/horror/drama, with dysfunctional family/high school angst thrown in. It's way better than JJ Abrams' SUPER 8, the pseudo-Spielbergian feature that tried (and failed) to mine this quarry some years back.

A little one. I was way more into this show than Wifey Bucket, but like I said, we powered through to the end after we each would have given up.

That said if you haven't watched DA, give the first 3 eps a try and see if you're not into the who vadge thing.

Less enamored with Cameron Crowe's ROADIES on Showtime.
I like the concept and that his fondness for music comes through, but it seems kind of disconnected and aimless at times; fun some moments, silly and pointless in others.

I didn't even know it was a comic! I haven't seen past the third ep :( but I was mesmerized by these characters in it. Like the ones who come right back..lol (anyone not watching will not know what that means).

Anyone not watching but interested. If available thru some outlet like on demand, watch the teaser for the pilot. Just the opening scene that leads up to the opening credits. And after that, tell me you don't wanna know what the fuck is going on. I had to watch after that open.

Re: What's on Your TV in 2016

It was a great comic, published by DC during the `90s on its Vertigo imprint (their label for "mature" comics -- i.e., those with swearing, excessive gore and the occasional shot of side titty, mostly created by English and Irish sociopaths with great talent and a deeply disturbed sense of humor). In this case, Irishman Garth Ennis and Englishman Steve Dillon. Its a classic award-winning series, one of the most influential and popular of its time. They tried for many years to develop it as a film (first the Weinsteins, then HBO), but it didn't happen until fan Seth Rogen brought it to AMC. I think they've pretty much nailed it in its tone, characterizations and themes. Its a little all over the place, storywise, and its pacing is erratic, but i think season 2 is set up for the "on the road / buddy movie" structure that the book provides.

And STAND BY ME and POLTERGEIST and FIRESTARTER (plus about half a dozen other Stephen King movies). It heavily and, seemingly, intentionally borrowed elements from all of these (and more) projects and it cleverly succeeds in delivering a good sci-fi/horror story. All the way down to the title fonts and creepy synth music, the series captured the look and feel of an early 80s scary flick, but was able to use 21st century effects to hold off on the cheese. The acting was impressive considering most of the roles came from relative unknowns and/or kids. I can't decide if Winona Ryder was great in her performance, but it did not lack for effort, which I haven't always been able to say about her in the past.

Two gripes:

1. The story is set in a fictional town in Indiana. I lived in Indiana for a couple years as a kid. I know people from Indiana. At least 75% of folks I've met from that state have a twangy/country accent. I don't recall any of the portrayals in this series having an Indiana accent. It's a problem I had with NBC's series PARKS AND REC, which was set in Indiana as well.

2. The story states in the opening of episode 1 that is specifically set in November of 1983. Episode 2 closes with the Bangles cover of "Hazy Shade Of Winter" (1987) and episode 6 features the "cool kids" driving while listening to Corey Hart's "Sunglasses At Night" (1984). It's nit-picky, but a pet peeve of mine when dated material contains music that historically hadn't been released yet.

I wonder if this series would have the same appeal to people under 40 who may not have grown up on these films, but, all in all, I agree that the series is great fun with a nostalgic nod to some very classic movies from my childhood.

So, then, it's the anti-"Americans." (The soundtrack of which is... like everything else about the show, superbly chosen and employed.)

The kids seem to dig "Things," if the coterie I work with is a fair bellwether.

Re: What's on Your TV in 2016

Stupid binge streaming is great and sucks at the same time.

Last night we polished off season one of GOOD GIRLS REVOLT, a Amazon drama set in 1970 NYC based on the true story of women co-workers who sued Newsweek magazine because they were prohibited from writing bylined articles and forced instead to be assistants to men who got the ink. It's a bit too predictable but there's a couple of great characters and I kinda like it for tearing down the whole "Mad Men" thing. All the actors are beautiful to look at and fuck each oter.

Even better, IMO (so far): Season 2 of RED OAKS, way better than season 1, which I liked for being funny and strongly evocative if like me you were a college student in the 80s with no idea what you wanted to do with your life. Where season 1 was a kind of CADDYSHACK at a Jewish country club in New Jersey, this season (set in the following summer of '86) is less sitcommy, takes the characters a lot farther, while still being funny and evocative.
