Re: PowerballŪ Poll ll

we won $4 (which was actually _less_ than expected probability would give us) at the office, so in for a penny, in for a pound..

of course, Cash option 930 mill, divided by 13, after taxes and really I'm only winning like $40 mill or something. Provided we were to win alone.

I just hope that he doesn't quit his day job if he wins.

I don't think Matt Harvey winning Powerball endears him to Mets fans.

It may not be endearing, but I find it amusing.

I figure the odds of my winning are the same whether or not I buy any tickets, so I'm not buying any tickets. It's much less effort to just flush a twenty dollar bill down the toilet.

For the low cost of a half a latte, you have infinitely greater chance of winning by purchasing a single ticket than you do if you buy none.

That's true, to the extent that a 0.00000034% chance is infinitely better than 0.00%

All you need is a dollar and a dream.

Or in this case, two dollars.

Or in my case, just the dream....

Additional tax on the gullible and misinformed. I find it entertaining
from time to time... it's a couple of freakin' dollars. We piss money away
every day on things we can do without...

Taxes are good things. They help make a useful society.

Re: PowerballŪ Poll ll

It didn't make any difference. I don't play the lottery.

I've seen the argument that people buy into big payoff lotteries because it allows them to imagine what would happen if they won. I must have a better imagination than they do, since I can do that without buying a ticket.

The anti-lottery sect is just as interesting to me as the nut jobs you
might see on the news saying they bought $200 in tickets.

It's kinda like when people boast they don't own a tv because they
don't believe in it. Well, we have three. Different strokes...

TV! right! I was supposed to buy a third (along with a matching elliptical) thanks for reminding me.

That's sorta morphed into a "Oh, I don't have cable." brag these days.

This is incorrect, and i'm surprised to see this from such a qualified math guy as MM. The odds of winning the powerball lottery are soooooo ridiculously long, that the difference in one's chances to win between buying a ticket and NOT buying a ticket are NOT infinite... they are infinitesimal. After all, you might find a ticket in the street, or someone might give you one as a gift, or you might steal one from a 7-11. Your chances of that happening (and you winning as a result) are nearly the same... hundreds of billions to 1.

of course, if it gives you pleasure to buy a ticket and dream, then go for it. why not?
Except if you can't really afford it and your buy 100 tickets. That's when Lottery = poor man's tax, indeed.
I can't believe i agree with Ashie. I don't think it has ever happened before.

Wait... you have three TVs just show you can watch Different Strokes? Who even shows that anymore? I mean yeah, once in a while you get cute, young Janet Jackson, but still.

I mean, I can see getting three TVs if somebody was running The Greatest American Hero. That show was awesome.

There's a lot of channels now, I forget which one but I've seen Different
Strokes
on one of them I'm sure. I thought Janet Jackson was on Good
Times
?

Never saw The Greatest American Hero.

Doesn't look at all familiar, don't even remember commercials for it.
~1980-84 was for sure the years that I watched the least amount of TV
in my life.

Kong is correct. A young Janet Jackson appeared of Good Times late in the shows run.
