Still Alive in 2016

For folks you either thought were already dead or had simply lost track of for so long that you assumed they must be.

Chuck Barris - 86 and living in Palisades, NY (acc to Wikipedia)

I hadn't thought of this guy in years until recently re-seeing the 2002 dark-comedy film made from Barris's auto-bio-fiction-ography 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' (Sam Rockwell, George Clooney, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts)
I was even thinking -- as I was watching the now 14 year old movie -- that he probably already deceased by the time it was made, until the point at the very end when appears as himself.
So that sent me to Wikipedia to look him up which revealed that not only wasn't he gone when the movie came out, but he's still hanging around now.

Re: Still Alive in 2016

Abe Vigoda is the patron saint of this thread even though there have been so many 'can you believe he's still around?' conversations about Abe Vigoda over the years that virtually everyone knows that Abe Vigoda is still around.
And all this 42 years after the debut of BARNEY MILLER in which his character 'Fish' was the butt of all the old man jokes. Think about that, you out-live old man jokes by over four decades ... and counting!!

Oh God - that means this year I will be the same age that he was when Barney Miller debuted...

Abe Vigoda was 53 when Barney Miller debuted? I never thought of it that way but, logically, it has to be. And the thing is, that Vigoda looked like an 80 year old even before that --- when he was Tesio in The Godfather. I know what 53 is supposed to look like and I'd bet that Vigoda looked 53 when he was 35.

Olivia de Havilland, coming up on her 100th birthday later this year (July 1).

Her Gone With the Wind husband, Leslie Howard, has been dead for almost 73 years. (Her other co-stars are also pretty dead. Clark Gable has been gone for 55 years, and Vivien Leigh for over 47 years. And she's outlived Errol Flynn by 56 years.)

And how about Kirk Douglas? He's almost as old as Olivia; he turned 99 just last month. (His birthday was December 9.)

And out-lived her younger and much-hated sister Joan Fontaine by two years now and counting as Fontaine died in Dec 2013 at the age of 96.

Norman Lloyd is 101. Outlived Robin Williams. And was recently featured in Amy Schumer's Trainwreck, so he's still working!

I tend to think of Kirk as dead, but then I remember that I frequently conflated him with Lloyd Bridges. Strong-chinned dudes/cowboy types whose sons followed him into the business.

Montreal's Jarry Park, original home of the Expos, now converted to a tennis venue and known as Uniprix Stadium. (It got its name, I assume, because players who compete there are limited to having at most one penis.)

The site's address, by the way, is 285 Rue Gary-Carter.

I do that, and I sometimes conflate Michael Douglass with Jeff Bridges.

Are we sure that Glen Campbell is alive? MFS62, in his anti-Campbell zeal, may have driven a stake through his heart.

I didn't have to keep Glen on my 40 man roster. He's ok by me.
I knew my comments are memorable.

Yesterday, when I was dead
My life had ceased to be, a post on Facebook said.
I'm only Eighty-Two, a victim of a hoax
And now I'll be ignored on the date I finally croak ...

Re: Still Alive in 2016

That's a beautiful song, I listened to it on youtube earlier. Reminds
me of an old man dive bar we sometimes hung out at in the early
80's on Saturday afternoons. It had a big ol' pool table, cheap draft
and that song often on the jukebox.

Re: Still Alive in 2016

Originally written in French as 'Hier Encore' (Only Yesterday) in 1964, it was translated in English by a Jewish South African journalist before being recorded and released by Roy Clark in 1969.
Clark had the biggest hit with the song although his is only one of dozens of recordings made in several languages.

I tend to be a sucker for this kind of older guy version where the absence of the kind of over-production that was rampant in the '60s & '70s more than makes up for the diminished quality of singing (and the occasional bad hairpiece).

Actor Joss Ackland, a Leap Year's Day baby, just celebrated his 22nd, or was it his 88th?, birthday.
Confusing.

Beverly Cleary is awesome. And she'll be 100 next week.

I've been to Klickitat Street in Portland, Oregon, which was where her characters lived. There's a sculpture garden at the end of the street with statues of Henry, Beezus, Ramona, Ribsy, and the rest of them.

Well, Kirk made it despite your attempted jinx.

Sen. John McCain's mother, Roberta Wright McCain, still going at 104 - born Feb 1912 in Oklahoma just four years after it was admitted as a state and seven days before the state where her 80 y/o son is currently Senator was admitted.
Her identical twin died five years ago at age 99.
