You'll Have to Eat Your Lunch All by Yourself (spl. fr/Guess Who)

Eagles guitarist Glen Frey, according to a potentially accurate tweet.

When I was attending Mizzou in the mid-80s, the team adopted "The Heat is On" as a theme song -- and it was played over and over in the dorm.

TMZ reported Frey's death some 30 minutes ago (and, as mockable as that outfit is, they don't seem to get a lot wrong) from "a combination of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia."
I had previously heard of the intestinal problems which led to canceled appearances and such over the last year.

Very surprised he went before Randy Meisner.

All in all, he seemed as big an asshole as any other Eagle...but they couldn't have been the Eagles without him. They are a very polarizing band, but undoubtedly influential and popular.

RIP

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Mr. Muscle is outlived not only by Meisner, but by Joe Walsh and Linda Ronstadt.

From Wikipedia (so you know it's true):
Meisner has struggled on-and-off with alcohol and drug addictions since the late 1960s, especially during his tenure with the Eagles, as he struggled to deal with his newfound fame. He later credited his drug use as one of the main reasons for his first marriage failing, and subsequently stayed sober for a prolonged period of time in the late 1980s. He has since relapsed on several occasions. The abuse eventually took a toll on Meisner's health, and following minor heart attacks in 2004 he was forced to cut back on touring. As his health continued to deterioate, he eventually stopped performing, with his final performance being in 2008 in Naples, Florida.

In March 2013, Meisner suffered yet another health scare after losing consciousness in his California home. A piece of food obstructed his breathing while he was eating, and he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors were optimistic about his recovery, but in his weakened state, Meisner could not accept the invitation to participate in the History of the Eagles tour alongside fellow ex-bandmate Bernie Leadon, who participated on the tour. The incident damaged his vocal cords, leaving him with weakened voice and speech.

In April 2015, Meisner and his wife denied rumours that she was taking advantage of his known addictions to alcohol and drugs, trying to force-feed him bottles of vodka to keep him drunk, in response to the singer's longtime friend, James Newton, filing papers in April asking that Meisner be placed under a court-supervised conservatorship governing both his personal and financial matters.[46] Despite this, three months later, the Los Angeles County Superior Court appointed a temporary conservator to oversee the 24-hour management of Meisner's drug prescriptions and medical state, after he was diagnosed as bipolar and suicidal. Meisner had allegedly threatened to kill himself, his wife and several others with an AK-47.

IOW, if one were to have placed a bet on the first deceased Eagle, Meisner would have looked like the safe bet prior to Frey beating him to the punch ... not that this was the first incident of Frey punching Meisner.

I like Meisner too. No Henley or Frey vocal could touch what he brought on "Take It to the Limit."

Say what you want about Glenn Frey, the man knew how to wear his baseball pants.

He certainly came off as a stone-cold killer in that (authorized) film bio that we've discussed several times here.
I suppose stuff like that is inevitable as things morph from the youthful and '60s idealism of 'Hey let's start a band and land some chicks!!', to being middle-aged guys with the mindset of: 'This is MY band and it represents MY legacy and funds MY retirement and will be MY children's inheritance, so if any of you hired hands types don't like the direction things are taking or the schedule we've laid out then we'll just find someone else to play your instrument or sing your part'.

Of course it doesn't mean you have to be such a dick about it.

That big Eagles grudge match wasn't with the Rolling Stones, but the Rolling Stone magazine editorial staff, who the Eagles (probably Frey, mostly) were pissed at RS for slagging them one too many times.

Rolling Stone accepted the challenge, figuring they'd lay out some bases in Central Park and get a funny sidebar story out of it, but instead the Eagles had them flown to LA for a surreal match before a packed house at Dedeaux Field. Eagles won pretty big and the feud was settled.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but Frey was responsible for all my least favorite Eagles songs. His death was a shock however because I didn;t even know he was sick.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

It seems impossible to me that Glenn Frey was only 67 years old. I was too young to hear their stuff when it first came out, so when I heard it in the 80's it was already "classic rock". For a kid, it seemed like the music had been around forever.

When they did "Hell Freezes Over", they seemed so old. But looking at his bio, he was only 46 at the time. Crazy.

Hard to believe these guys are around my age.

I would have guessed Frey would be well into his 70's by now.

The Eagles didn't really show up until the '70s (debut in '71) which puts them the better part of a decade behind the Beatles/Stones et al. Ringo, the oldest Beatle, turned 75 last summer; George (the youngest) would have turned 72 in a few weeks. Also Dylan, 75 later this year, etc. So you can't quite put the Eagles in the same class with those seniors.

Other 67 y/o rock stars: James Taylor (1970 debut) - 67; Steven Tyler - 67; Steve Winwood (although he started ridiculously young); Cat Stevens, Robert Plant; Jackson Brown (Frey's one-time roommate);
At 66 you get Springsteen, Billy Joel, and others who also didn't start until the '70s

Can anyone recap why The Eagles are arguably the least popular band on

The Daily News, which has frankly gone insane, gets two days of cover editorials — the first being an "Eagles Suck" story, the second being the same author declaring himself "the most hated man in America," because of alleged death threats he's gotten from Eagles fans.

Part of my first response to news of Frey's passing was shock that rheumatoid arthritis can become fatal. Than I read further that he had ulcerated colitis and pneumonia, and I thought, well, pneumonia can kill anybody.

But then famed manager Irving Azoff comes out today with the news that these last two conditions were a product of treating the first. “The colitis and pneumonia were side effects from all the meds,” Azoff said. “He died from complications of ulcer and colitis after being treated with drugs for his rheumatoid arthritis which he had for over 15 years.”

And I'm thinking, say what you will about Glenn Frey (and I have), but he may have killed himself to keep playing music.

I guess every form of refuge has its price.
Which isn't to say that one shouldn't take medication for something that prevents you from doing what you want, but there is a cautionary note here about our American tendency towards over-medicating.

RA (as RA sufferers call it) is one of the conditions my mother had in her later years, a symptom that came out of nowhere right after my sister's death. Her doctors told her that there's zero evidence that RA can be stress-caused but they also admit that they see it too often to totally dismiss it either.
Also no evidence that RA or the meds she took for it contributed to the symptoms that eventually killed her, but it probably didn't help.

I thought it was just me who hates the Eagles. And to be honest my hate is based mostly on the band being overplayed and that I've encountered way too many people who act is if this merely good band is one of the all-time greats.
In the beginning the Eagles were a second-rate Poco. But once they added Joe Walsh, the turned into a pretty good band.

There was also a sizable sect of rock-n-rollers, particularly among urban easterners, who railed against the mellow-er 'California sound' as something that was insufficiently R-n-R. Not that they invented that genre (Byrds, Poco, Browne, Rondstadt, etc.) but that they eventually became the most successful at it meant that they became the biggest target.
As mentioned, the addition of Walsh gave them a grittier sound as they consciously tried to steer away from the country-rock image of their early albums, although it's not like that tamed all the critics either.

btw, was there anyone who had more 'looks' over the years than Don Henley?

Recently re-watched that Eagles documentary (CNN of all places has picked it up) and have watched Henley go from Texas teen, to California long-haired rocker, to his curly perm and beard phase, to his clean-shaven look but with the voluminous hair and pony-tail, to the close-cropped hair w/the trim goatee, and probably a bunch more in between that I'm missing here.

We discussed ex-Eagle Randy Meisner's substance and mental health problems up this thread a bit. Well now comes this story out of California (although not from a hotel):

The wife of Eagles co-founder Randy Meisner was fatally shot Sunday night at the couple’s home in Los Angeles, police said.
LAPD officers visited their Studio City home earlier in the evening before Meisner, 69, called them back later to report the Lana Rae Meisner, 63, had been shot in the head, law enforcement sources told RadarOnline.
The musician told police his wife shot herself or was killed by accident, as she searched for something in the closet, according to the site.

I suspect I'm not alone in thinking that the 'accident' explanation probably has a short shelf-life.
