Woke up this morning to a friend request from a very nice looking young man from maybe SE PA....Is it any of you? I don't know where else he could have come across me.

Although if I look at his friends, there are some friends that are friends with some of my friends. (I think that's so cool when that happens)

I think "common core" is a punchline (like "new math" was years before) and nobody knows what it really means.

Even teachers are sharing "check out this common core insanity!!!" memes, and when asked if they've been given this curriculum on their own, they say they haven't seen it.

Seems like the CC backlash has made for an aligning of completely disparate interests: Tea Party antigovernment ignoramuses, upper-class privileged white folk worried about competition or change, and hard-core union teachers.

Not saying it's right or wrong, but Lunchpail's school is very much behind standardized testing, and most of their kids are doing great, especially in math. I cannot vouch for repeating the math education I got, that's for sure.

I've been paying more attention lately, though I surely have a few years before Ceetarette is taking math classes. I'm mentally preparing myself for having to deal with other parents.

The thing is, Common Core math isn't really 'standardized testing', it's math education that's meant to really discuss the mathematical concepts rather than the rote memorization way most everyone else learned. And I'm not sure we're at the point of real results yet, because while it might be a little more involved at lower levels, where it's really supposed to pay off is later on with more complex math because the foundation should be much stronger.

I think education in general could use a pretty serious overhaul (and a huge boost in funding) but Common Core seems to be one of the areas they got right, at least in methodology. Testing it is perhaps a different issue, I'm not positive of a better/best way to objectively evaluate student progress though.

By a friend of mine who is a psychiatrist -

In my medical office, the staff are now spending fully half their time arguing with insurance companies that demand "prior authorizations" before agreeing to pay for prescription medications that patients have depended on for years. Essentially, no matter what I prescribe, the insurer responds, "Yeah, we no longer cover that." In many cases I have to fill out faxed paperwork with inane, inapplicable, or insulting questions before the insurer will agree to pay, such as, "Will this patient be properly monitored while taking this medication?" Um, no, we're just going to ignore her! The whole process is demeaning, and it takes time away from responding to legitimate medical concerns when patients call in. And it causes anxiety among patients when they go to pick up their prescriptions, only to be told, "Your insurer denied payment; the retail price is $760 for a one month supply." In many cases patients go a week or more without vital medication waiting for a bunch of clerks in an insurance office a thousand miles away to make a decision. An FDA-approved medication prescribed by a licensed physician should be covered by insurance, no questions asked. By maintaining an unreasonably restrictive list of "approved" medications, insurers are practicing medicine without a license, and should all be subject to criminal charges.

I feel your friends pain. I find that the majority of the time, when I prescribe a medication, I will receive either a call from the patient regarding non-coverage of the prescribed medication or a fax from the pharmacy stating that I must obtain "prior authorizations" from the insurance company in order from them to cover the medication (to any extent). Often times, the insurance company will tell you what they will cover (generally whatever the cheapest option available is) and refuse to cover any other option until the patient tries the medication recommended under the formulary. If the patient therapeutically "fails" on the recommended medication from the insurance formulary, then they will allow you to prescribe what you feel is actually best for the patient.

trump supporter on my feed with whom I've had clashes and should probably just unfriend wrote:

borders, language, and culture define a nation.

uh, what are three characteristics of the USofA that are constantly and continually in flux, alex?

now, fine, in the traditional sense, borders language and culture do define a nation. but then the usa is not a nation in that sense.

to the extent that the united states could be considered a nation in the traditional sense, it has never been a nation. perhaps many of its states could be considered akin to nations, either individually or in groups, but never as a whole. the language has constantly evolved and changed, to the point where it is completely distinct from that which birthed it, and is also significantly regionally distinct. we're currently at a point where its borders are historically stable, in that they haven't changed in 70 years. but prior to that, well, to claim that its borders were unchanging would be ludicrous. and our culture has always, always been in flux, and has always been that of a melting pot or better yet a salad bowl. and our culture is quite clearly regional, and not strictly confined to our own borders.

there are certain elements of our culture that lean us in the direction of nationalism, sure, but those tend to run directly counter to the idea of American nationalism - specifically our historical attitude of inclusion, opportunity, and freedom, and our place as a refuge for the persecuted and unwanted.

the US is a country, and is defined most predominantly by our constitution, and by our history, and the threads which connect from here to then. there need not be a uniform culture or mandated language or closed border, as such things run counter to our supposed national identity.

but, yeah, fuck it. I don't really need to discuss this on facebook. it's not worth it. more specifically, he's not worth it.

For some warped reason Facebook has added a side bar on the right that lets you translate your page into a different language. I clicked German by accident yesterday, and needed the help of Google Translate to get back to English.

Why would they do such a thing? If you want to change the language of your page it's very simple to go into the settings and do it, so I can't imagine that anyone was clamoring for this.

Does anyone else get a folder of images and icons and stuff when downloading an image from facebook?

I d/l a photo from a friends fb photo album to make a card from, and BOOM somehow I have a folder with fb icons and avatars included with the photo. Lots of images, mostly small thumbnail type. And the photo I saved doesn't end up in that new folder. Both the photo and new folder of crap show up in the folder where I originally saved the photo.

This has happened twice w/2 different people and it's very annoying.

But hasn't it become just another facebook that moves incredibly fast while sharing less? Is the only difference the character limit?

Re: facebook 2016

This is possibly my favorite Facebook status update ever!

Staying awake during brain surgery? No problem! Here's my story of my meningioma tumor! Thank Gd and all of you for your good wishes and prayers!
Lemons
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
That popular phrase resonates with me. It reminds me to be positive, enjoy life’s sweetness and triumph over challenges.
On April 18, 2016, a challenge like no other found me. That was the day I learned that I had a large brain tumor.
This is story of victory.
It's about a brain tumor, and the amazing people who helped kick it out of my life! It's about modern medicine and the fun of staying awake during brain surgery!
---
First, I have a nasty battle cry to shout to my brain tumor.
I won’t let you define me. You cannot defeat me. You grew in the wrong head. For me, and for those I love, you cannot scare me. I will conquer you.
---
Let’s start in the beginning.
How did I find out that this tumor was in my brain? Some typical symptoms are: recurrent headaches, hearing or vision loss, or poor coordination. I had none of these.
But I did pass out while running on my treadmill, on an ordinary Thursday night, at home. I have no memory of 30 minutes of my life that night. Later, doctors told me that I had a seizure, which is another brain tumor symptom.
About three days after that surprise seizure, my primary care doctor examined me and suggested that I get an MRI. The MRI revealed the unwelcome visitor. A large lemon-sized meningioma tumor was taking up residence in the left frontal region of my brain.
I was startled, but not fearful. I’m an optimist and I tried to shift into the “let’s fix it” mode.
Without skipping a beat, and with the support of my awesome family, it was time to go to the Emergency Room and hatch a treatment plan with the neurology experts.
---
Countless tests, a stretcher in a crowded hospital corridor, crowds, waiting and more waiting. Please avoid Emergency Rooms, if you can.
After zooming in on this tumor, Dr. Andrews, my ninja warrior neurosurgeon, concluded that the tumor was benign.
Grateful, I was about to break into the happy dance, until Dr. Andrews told me that the tumor was very near my language processing abilities, near the Broca's area of my brain. He wanted me to be awake during the brain surgery, talking, while they removed the tumor. This would prevent damage to my speaking abilities.
Staying awake during brain surgery is not exactly on my bucket list. It sounds scary, almost horrifying, but I sized up the perks rather quickly.
I am a rather chatty person and I do love to socialize, especially with talented surgical teams! Also, I’m a Toastmaster and I was looking for a good inspiring topic for speech number ten. I felt fortunate to work with this “A” team to remove the tumor. Sign me up!
Prior to surgery, an additional MRI was done to pinpoint the exact boundaries of the tumor, like a MapQuest of the mind.
April 27, 2016 was a holiday I called Craniotomy Wednesday!
---
I have a clean and simple description of my five-hour surgery that happened on Craniotomy Wednesday.
Do not try this at home.
Good anesthesia. A five-star package is recommended if you plan to get a “wake up call” during brain surgery.
Opening night for the skull: Good news. I was allowed to be asleep while my surgeon prepared my scalp and skull. They had some great tools, probably not from the Home Depot but similar, to crack the coconut. There was a drill for the skull and a craniotome to cut out a rectangular piece of my skull. This is called a bone flap, about the size of the palm of your hand.
Rise and shine, your brains are showing: After setting the bone flap aside temporarily, it was time to expose my brains. They used surgical scissors to cut a thick membrane over my brain called the dura. Next the doctors dialed down the anesthesia. It was time to wake up and strike up some cocktail conversations.
There I was, awake, aware and very calm. My head was clamped in a three-pin Mayfield skull clamp, so I couldn’t exactly run away, if I was scared. But I wasn’t scared at all. While they removed the tumor, we had comfortable pleasant conversations. We talked about great topics: travel, great cities to visit, museums, rose gardens! My favorite line from my surgeon was: The tumor is out, 100% removed!
Good-bye tumor: It was time to go back to sleep so they could close up shop. Maybe I was too chatty because the residents looked exhausted from my yapping. They seemed happy to put me back under. A brand new set of titanium screws secured the bone flap back on my skull. What a great souvenir!
---
After the successful surgery, all the rewards in my life felt magnified. I had only GOOD side effects and I will always be grateful.
First, I am lucky they found and removed this tumor using the latest medical advances and great technology.
Second, I feel a sense of renewed compassion for people who are not as fortunate as I am. Sadly, we all know someone fighting tumors, cancer and other serious diseases. Nearly 700,000 people in the United States are living with a primary brain tumor, and 37% are malignant. In 2016, about 78,000 more brain tumors will be diagnosed. The patient perspective is very real for me and has fueled my desire to want to help others.
Finally, my heart and spirits are elevated. The care and kindness from my family, friends and community fully empowered me to jump over this hurdle in life. To all of you who have been there for me, you are my Love, my Strength and my Purpose.
To Hal, my fun-loving husband, who joked that I should “get my head examined” quite often over the last 26 years, I guess you were right all along.
---
I leave you with my favorite quote: Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.
Life is imperfect. Lemons come out of nowhere and whack us. Hard. Without warning. But we can win with determination, great medical advances and lots of love.
Now go take a sip of that refreshing sweet lemonade and schedule your next checkup.

However, rest assured that if a lunatic walks into the grocery store and pulls out a rifle, I will draw my pistol and protect myself and my family and therefore protect you and your family. I may get shot before I can pull the trigger...but, I won't die in a helpless blubbering heap on the floor begging for my life or my child's life. No, if I die it will be in a pile of spent shell casings. I won't be that victim. I choose not to be. As for you, I don't ask you to carry a gun. If you are not comfortable, then please don't. But I would like to keep my right to choose to not be a helpless victim. There is evil in the world and if evil has a gun, I want one too...

You ever get one of those "Today is Sarah McGuffigan Levitt's birthday. Wish her a happy birthday." message? And then you think, that's nice, she appears regularly in my feed, and ... who the hell is she again?"

Fairly frequently. I don't friend a lot of people (I've got more friends on Untappd) but there are a bunch of casual acquaintances from various online places that I know people by non-real names. Also there are at least 2-3 women from high school that have changed their name but didn't do the 'maiden name as middle name' thing that I barely remember if at all.

aside to that, one of the girls in my Italian classes in High School got married and changed her last name..to mine and it wigs me out a bit. (extremely common name and all, but still)

I'm fb friends with at least three old girlfriends from longer ago than I care
to acknowledge. All three of them ended our relationships, one broke my heart.
I can't decide if it's weird we've reconnected online or if it's just a sign of the
times and it was a long long time ago and nothing really matters but the present.

Just one of those trending blurbs on fb that Eve Plumb (by far my most
favorite Brady) sold her Malibu Beach house for nearly 4 million bucks.
She bought it in 1969 when she was 11 for a mere $55,000.

Nice work, Jan!!

Would like to see the inside, it has a fireplace by the size of that chimney. Wonder
who the neighbors are and the size of the lot. I don't really care much about Holly-
wood news and stuff but this was Jan Brady's beach house for 45 years. Jan!

Peter's doing hair restoration commercials, Jan's a real estate mogul.

The rising tide of open or indifferently veiled racism and proud ignorance out there is killing me. Just killing me.

Beyond members of my own extended family getting caught up in it, people post crazy and hateful shit on my job's Facebook page, and I can't engage, because even though I've hid my employer on my settings, everybody at work would be all, "Jeez, Edge, you're feeding trollskis."

But I can't get over the idea that not pushing back against these horrible thoughts and pronouncements just allows it normalize and metastasize.

I understand why you wouldn't want to respond - but if this is on your job's page perhaps your organization should have whoever is the moderator DELETE things? Trolls love responses - Trolls hate getting deleted and might go Troll elsewhere.

One of the most confusing feelings as a sports fan walking out of a major loss is, "if only I had done more." While completely nonsensical, I feel helpless and at fault when my teams fail, as though somehow as a screaming fan I could have changed the game.
Well. If only I had done more. Please contact me in 2018 for midterm electioneering. I will make time for political action. I will make time for protest. I had better, or I don't know what I'm going to say to myself.

I have been receiving friend requests and I think they're from CPF-ers. But they only say "X mutual friend(s)"
I wish I knew more about the person before I friend them.
Or, maybe I could request to be a friend of the CPF facebook site.
But who runs THAT? How would you recognize me?
'tis a puzzlement.

Lazy Q: Do you have to let Facebook Messenger on your phone
integrate with your regular cellular-provider messenger service?
The last couple of days my AT&T messages also go to fb msg app

nah. I didn't install Messenger for a while because I feel like it's silly to have a second app plus why do I need a another chat app just text or tweet at me, I think that covers roughly everyone I'm friends with that would message me.

I installed it* quite some time ago to get fb messaging and it worked
fine... not like I get a ton of fb messages so I never thought about it.
A couple of days ago it started getting my phone messaging too and I
was lazily hoping someone knew why and could help me turn it off. I
just deleted it from the phone. Yet just another example of fb does what
it wants when it wants and a billion people don't care.

* not because I wanted it but because the dogs at facebook couldn't
leave well enough alone and let you get messages in the fb app.
