Feb 13 2006 09:46 PM

The rookie is gunning for Seawolf. He puts up:

1. Wish You Were Here
2. Money
3. Another Brick in the Wall (part 2)
4. Comfertably Numb
5. Time
6. See Emily Play
7. Echoes
8. Astronomy Domine
9. Welcome to the Machine
10. Breathe

Wolf, your response?

We shouldn't expect a response tonight from Lenny, he says he's 13,after he first posted I welcomed him and asked him if he was going to Spring Training this year, he replied "no I'm 13"...classic.

]6. See Emily Play

Young Lenny's goes back a ways for that one.

"See Emily Play" and "Astronomy Domine" are pre-David Gilmour songs, the "Relics" album would have them both.

"Echoes" is from "Meddle."

The others are from the familiar Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall albums.

All ten to Pink Floyd, though I would add "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Atom Heart Mother," "Summer '68," "Careful With That Ax, Eugene," "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun," "Free Four," "One of these Days," "Brain Damage/Eclipse," "What Do You Want From Me?," and "Keep Talking" to the mix -- all of which would beat Aerosmith.

Aerosmith isn't a bad band, but they're no Pink Floyd.

Yeah, I sense this is going to be ugly too. Problem is, you're talking about 15-minute boring prog epics versus four-minute rock songs. Might just be a matter of preference. I'll change my order to try to get some better matchups.

Love In An Elevator
Toys In The Attic
Back In The Saddle
Dream On
Walk This Way
Sweet Emotion
Train Kept A Rollin'
Janie's Got A Gun
Last Child
Mama Kin

I've never followed either of these bands all too much so I had to go find a lot of song samples to refresh my memory. Oddly this may be the most carefully considered of all my ballots yet.

1. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
2. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic (by default as I despise "Money")
3. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall
4. Tie - Dream On/Comfortably Numb (kind of wish these weren't head to head)
5. Aerosmith -Walk this Way (although I like the RUN-DMC version better)
6. Tie - See Emily Play/Sweet Emotion (the Floyd song was an early one I'd not heard before but sounded kind of neat c/w the overplayed Aerosmith song)
7. Aerosmith - Train Kept a Rollin' (in honor of KC)
8. Tie - Astronomy Domine/Janie's Got a Gun (both these songs get an meh? from me - too bad Astronomy can't go against Dream On and Janie against Comfortably Numb)
9. Aerosmith - Last Child
10. Aerosmith - Mama Kin (there used to be a club in Boston owned by Steven Tyler called Mama Kin's , now it all makes sense!)

Aerosmith 6.5:3.5 Pink Floyd

Wish You Were Here v. Love In An Elevator
I’m not sure I like this Aerosmith lineup adjustment already. Round 1 to the Floyds.

Money v. Toys In The Attic
Absurdly overplayed, but – ca-ching! – Pink Floyd rings up another.

Another Brick in the Wall (part 2) v. Back In The Saddle
Never been a big “Wall” guy, but this beats BITS. Another matchup would have been better.

Comfertably Numb v. Dream On
I always found “Comfortably Numb” to be uncomfortably boring: A lot of Floyd music risks that with so much emphasis on atmosphere. Aerosmith is finally on the board. It’s 3-1

Time v. Walk This Way
Aerosmith is hanging on in quiet desparation. Call it a tie.

See Emily Play v. Sweet Emotion
‘See Emily’ is a weird song, by Floyd standards, at least, and probably why they would get more experimental. My get up and go musta got up and went. Aerosmith wins, and its 3.5-2.5

Echoes v. Train Kept A Rollin'
Um… tie?

Astronomy Domine v. Janie's Got A Gun
Don’t like latter-day Aerosmith all that much but prefer Rag Doll and Dude Looks Like A Lady to this piece. Floyd wins. 5-3

Welcome to the Machine v. Last Child
Breathe v. Mama Kin
Two more atmospheric Floyd songs vs. Mollyhatchety Aerosmith boogie – to account for taste, I’ll give Floyd 1.5 out of 2.

Final score: Pink Floyd 6.5, Aerosmith 3.5

Wish You Were Here vs. Love In an Elevator
Floyd. Seawolf ducks a challenge with a weak contender
Money vs. Toys in the Attic
Floyd
Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) vs. Back in the Saddle
Floyd
Comfortably Numb vs. Dream On
Floyd
Time vs. Walk This Way
Aerosmith
See Emily Play vs. Sweet Emotion
Floyd. David Bowie said that when he was starting out his dream was to be Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's original leader. You can see that in songs like "See Emily Play" (Bowie himself does a pretty good cover of it on "Pinups"
Echoes vs. Train Keep a Rollin'
Floyd. Echoes maybe a little long with those seagull noises in the middle but a beautiful melody and really the first of the latter-day PF songs.
Astronomy Domine vs. Janie's Got a Gun
Tie.
Welcome to the Machine vs. Last Child
Floyd
Breathe vs. Mama Kin
Floyd

PF 8.5, Aerosmith 1.5

Aerosmith 8, Floyd 2.

Yeah, I ducked "Wish You Were Here" and "Brick." I'll admit it. Figured I'd punt two and hope to get most of the rest. That's not to knock "Elevator" or "Saddle," but those are really the only two Floyd songs on this list that I like, so I figured it'd be safe. At least I challenged "Numb."

I got it tied. It'd be hard to find two such dissimilar high-stature bands of the rock era, and this was a pain. I respect both, but am a fan of neither, and know only the perimeters of their catalogs, and voting on hard-to-find 20-second clips didn't help me as much as the bands probably deserved. I suggest that my vote be thrown out, but since it didn't throw the contest one way or the other, what would be the point?

Edgy DC

60.5-29.5. Close on most cards, but mid-contest sweeps from Lenny and Norrin's ballots killed the suspense.

Murderers.

Wow, my image link was objected to.

Let's call it for Floyd and young Lenny.
