BLC: Prince & Rev vs. Tom Petty & Heartbreakers

Hard to fit these band names in the subject.

1999 and Little Red Corvette aren't Prince & the Revolution songs.
|
Edgy DC Feb 14 2006 04:46 PM |
Well, here's a gray area. The Revolution are not credited on the album cover, but many of the players that would be a part of the Revolution were in place.
|
sharpie Feb 14 2006 04:54 PM |
Gotta say no to "1999". The "& the Revolution" name didn't exist til "Purple Rain." Since he was mostly playing instruments himself before 1999, we can't know if Wendy and Lisa et al were on the 2 songs Willets has. There's plenty more good stuff on "Sign O' the Times" that hasn't been tapped, I say.

Wow, I thought Willets was kidding

According to Wikipedia the backing band that became known as The Revolution started playing with Prince in the 1970's and were first credited on the 1982 album1999. They were also credited on Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade. The band dissolved while recording the next album but many of the tracks they recorded together were included on Sign O The Times, so I included some tracks from that album as well. Later Prince formed a new band called the New Power Generation. Recordings with this band and "solo" works are not included.

I don't think Wendy's in the picture at all. Lisa is in the video along with Dr. Fink. I guess the drummer is there too but I don't recall. The baritone-singing-headbanded guitarist from 1999 ("But when I woke up this morning, could've sworn it was judgment day") is leading his own band in the Purple Rain movie, and the bleach blonde backup singer has been downgraded to waitress.

Best matchup since April Wine v. Chilliwack.

It was to be the "augmented by some chick" matchup. I thought that fair. Perhaps I should have booted another.
|
cooby Feb 14 2006 06:58 PM |
I really like Prince and the Revolution

Edgy DC Feb 14 2006 07:12 PM |
Didn't Cooby used to claim that she looked like Petty?

I feel like going back and throwing the ties to TP&H.
|
Edgy DC Feb 15 2006 10:01 AM |
If I was Willets, I'd've opened up from both barrells and submitted ""I Would Die 4 U/Baby, I'm a Star" as one track.

I hope we're all voting by song and not by brand.

It's the ten-zips that can worry a brotha.
|
Johnny Dickshot Feb 15 2006 10:10 AM |
Yup. I think sweeps are possible, probable even, but if we get one I'd feel better if the voter could humor us with an explanation of their thought processes. Down with partisan politics!
|
sharpie Feb 15 2006 10:18 AM |
There haven't been any sweeps in this matchup so far, what's the beef? For me, Prince is way more important to my life than Petty.

I don't have a beef, just campaigning for more pain and suffering in the voting process.

Looks like the 24-hour clock has run out on this one, but Edgy never even voted for his own band!

I've been real busy-like. Call mine about 6.5 to 3.5.
|
Willets Point Feb 15 2006 09:15 PM |
Assuming that's in favor of the TP&HB that means that P&R win 58.5 to 51.5. Shocking!
|
soupcan Feb 15 2006 09:23 PM |
Mayhaps TP&tHBs are just seeking their own level.

"Apartment Song" is ineligible as it's not from the Heartbreakers catalog.

"Full Moon Fever fully resuscitated the artist's career, which--some would say "arguably"--had been losing steam. With the album's four major hits and rave reviews from the critics (these things do not always go hand-in-hand), Petty must have breathed a sigh of relief. He left the Heartbreakers behind, hooked up with musician, writer, and producer Jeff Lynne, and rocked out with "Runnin' Down a Dream," got mellow and introspective on "Free Fallin'" and "A Face in the Crowd," and paid tribute (finally) to the Byrds with a cover of "Feel a Whole Lot Better." He perfected the sing-along guitar-pop song on "Yer So Bad" and had a wild time on "Zombie Zoo." Pure Petty perfection! " I stand corrected.

I'm begging the courtesy of going back and moving my Easton-Nicks tie into the Petty column, giving him a 5.5-4.5 win on my card. It was already the closest matchup we've had. Here's our final:
"Little Red Corvette" was a worldbeater in a tough matchup. "The Waiting" tried to do its part by pounding the snot out of movie-climax anthemic "Purple Rain," but, in the end, it didn't get enough snot. "Corvette" was simply the Little Engine That Could.

No problem. I'm not the one going around nitpicking, accusing people of cheating and changing the rules around. This is all for fun.
|
Edgy DC Feb 16 2006 10:55 AM |
Nobody's cheating.

I didn't say anyone is. I've just been accused of it repeatedly. And it makes me bitter.

Well, sharpie is probably gone, but I looked at the Revolution/not Revolution argument as more of a healthy semantic argument that this forum is made for. I know I didn't mean anything personal.
