I'll give you my list at lunch time. (1:30)

No, on second thought, if sharpie has to leave, and I am only making one minor change, I'll go now...

Foxy Lady
Purple Haze
Voodoo Child
Are You Experienced?
Hey Joe*
All Along the Watchtower
(Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire
Sunshine of Your Love
Crosstown Traffic (very 60's, I love it)
Castles Made of Sand (new!)

*my personal favorite

Burning Down the House -v- Foxy Lady - JIM HENDRIX EXPERIENCE Never was a big fan of Burning Down The House. Good song but so overplayed when it was released that it threw the 'Heads into the mainstream and I never forgave that song for that.

Heaven -v- Purple Haze - JIM HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - Haze is a classic 'Heaven' is overmatched here.

Once in a Lifetime -v- Voodoo Child - TALKING HEADS - 'Once in a Lifetime' is special to me the way Prince is special to sharpie.

Life During Wartime -v- Are You Experienced? - TALKING HEADS - Ah, youth.

Road to Nowhere -v- Hey Joe - TALKING HEADS - Tough call, nod to the 'Heads

The Big Country -v- All Along the Watchtower - JIM HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Psycho Killer -v- (Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire - TALKING HEADS Toughest matchup but 'FA FA FA FA FA FA FA FA FA FA' will get me every time

Thank You For Sending Me an Angel -v-Sunshine of Your Love JIM HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) -v- Crosstown TrafficTALKING HEADS This Must Be the Place is such a pleasent little tune. More Tom-Tom Club sounding than Talking Heads but I dig it the most.

Slippery People -v- Castles Made of Sand - TALKING HEADS

JIM HENDRIX EXPERIENCE- 4 / TALKING HEADS - 6

Jimi 8, Heads 2.

Thanks for bringing "Castles" into this. Cool tune.

(Funny, by the way, that Soup referred to them as the "Jim" Hendrix Experience. Soup and Jimi were very close friends.)

"Burning Down the House" vs. "Foxy Lady"
Gonna give this one to the Heads

"Heaven" vs. "Purple Haze"
Win to Jimi.

"Once in a Lifetime" vs. "Voodoo Child"
And you may ask yourself: Which is better? Heads take a 2-1 lead.

"Life During Wartime" vs. "Are You Experienced?"
No contest! Heads.

"Road to Nowhere" vs. "Hey Joe"
Jimi.

"The Big Country" vs. "All Along the Watchtower"
Jimi

"Psycho Killer" vs. "(Let Me Stand Next to Your) Fire"
Jimi.

"Thank You For Sending Me an Angel" vs. "Sunshine of Your Love"
Heads.

"Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place)" vs. "Crosstown Traffic"
Jimi.

"Slippery People" vs. "Castles Made of Sand"
When the Heads got all exciting like this one they were the best. Heads.

That’s a 5-5 tie. Interesting that “Cities,” and popular vote-getters like “And She Was” and “Stay Up Late” stayed on the bench.

Hendrix 4, Talking Head 3, 3 ties. Hard choices for one of the closest comparisons so far.

Feb 16 2006 03:10 PM

Actually, glad to see all of these close votes. I tried to go against a band who I think is somewhat comparable, not one that I thought would be easy to beat.

Edgy DC
Feb 16 2006 03:13 PM

No room for "Take Me to the River" --- the Heads' lone cover and their roof-raising encore. Also no "I Zimbra" or "Girlfriend is Better" or "Swamp." Sharpie picked a good sleeper with a deep catalog.

"Don't Worry About the Government", "Nothing but Flowers", and "Sax and Violins'" are a few more of my faves.

Take Me To the River, Don't Worry About the Government and Stay Up Late were three that I seriously considered but left off, all will probably appear in future matchups.

Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) -v- Crosstown Traffic

"Naive" is the prettiest song in the Heads catalog, and sums up a lot of Byrne's attraction toward domestic love. But "Traffic" burns like few others. Really inventive. Even if it wasn't a metaphor for anything, and was just a song about crosstown traffic, it'd be cool. Even as an instrumental, really.

Slippery People -v- Castles Made of Sand
=Purple]Experience
Jimi showing chops as songsmith here.

Yakking Melons hold out, 5 1/2 to 4 1/2.

I can't believe I voted twice in this contest. I must think I still live in Chicago.

I was at least happy to see that I voted the same way on both occasions in 9 of the 10 match ups. I called one a tie tonight after giving the nod to the Talking Heads last night. I will go with my initial vote from last night (and erase the ballot stuffing vote of earlier this evening) since there was no ties in it.
