Rockin' Doc Feb 17 2006 07:57 AM |
Van Halen jumps into action with this line up. In a battle 0f 1980's guitar bands Eddie Van Halen awaits Joe Perry’s licks in response.

I'm on my way out the door... I'll put songs up when I get to work. I'll try to match 'em up well, era to era.

An all-Roth ten, I think. Has to do better than his radio show so far.

Why is there spandex and muscle tees all over this thread? Long gauzey scarves also.

“Finish What Ya Started” is Hagar.

Johnny Dickshot Feb 17 2006 09:27 AM |
No wonder I couldn't figure out how it went.
|
seawolf17 Feb 17 2006 09:45 AM |
Let's do this right. We'll match up the songs from VHI and II with songs from the first three Aero albums, a cover with a cover, Dance with Dance, Panama with an 80s staple, Hagar with a post-drug song, and the two W&C songs with two from the heavy drug years.

soupcan Feb 17 2006 10:03 AM |
'W&C songs'?

Branding question: "Walk This Way": Isn't this more of a Run-DMC recording featuring special guests, composers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry?

Technically, Edgy's right; if we're going to be technically correct, change it to the original.

I have to also add, in fairness, that --- like "Walk Thiis Way" --- my big loser, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" came off of the other artist's album.

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic” -- tie
|
Edgy DC Feb 17 2006 01:58 PM |
We traditionally distribute half points for ties, not that it makes much of a a difference, so we should call that 6.5-3.5.

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic” Van Halen - if you have a great thirst and you're gay...

This is helping to prove just how great the early VH stuff was, Van Halen are the band looking for a new singer in the second season of the CBS show 'Rock Star', at least that's what Roth says.and apparently it's true, just some minor stuff to work out, how terrible an idea is that?, still I'll watch.

This is tough. On the one hand, I have a long-standing (and heretofore undisproven) hypothesis that everyone likes at least one Van Halen song, whether they try to act like they're too cool for VH or not. Even the mighty Aerosmith can't boast that kind of universal appeal. So for breadth, you gotta go with Halen.
|
seawolf17 Feb 17 2006 02:11 PM |
Everybody else involved with VH denies that rumor, and the latest word is that Dave Navarro is putting together a supergroup of sorts to look for a singer instead.

Despite the fact - or maybe it's because of it - that neither band is a fave of mine I'm inspired to vote here. I think I'm just curious how my vote will come out.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I happen to love the Sammy Hagar Van Halen years. Maybe it's because they coincided with my teens...I don't know. I just feel like I spent half of high school cruising around town with 5150 looping on the tape deck.
|
metirish Feb 17 2006 04:17 PM |
I liked Hagar's Van Halen a lot, saw them at Jones beach in 95 or 96, great live show.

He says he can't put a full vote on a cover, but yet he gives "You Really Got Me" a full vote. Disgusting.
|
soupcan Feb 18 2006 05:29 PM |
Maybe because 'Come Together' was a pretty disgusting cover?
|
HahnSolo Feb 18 2006 06:38 PM |
I would never want to disgust Seawolf. And he's absolutely right. I will edit my original post.
|
Rockin' Doc Feb 19 2006 02:38 PM |
When does this thing end? I haven't counted it up, but I think Van Halen will be entering at the bottom rung on the ladder.

My vote ties this up at 50-50. I'll log it one way or the other after the next vote, but I think we can leave these open and accept late votes and any results they may change. It is an ongoing challenge.
|
Rockin' Doc Feb 25 2006 10:34 AM |
Wow, I never imagined this one to be so close.
|
Johnny Dickshot Feb 25 2006 12:40 PM |
Woulda been cool if ended up 51-50
|
Rockin' Doc Feb 25 2006 02:00 PM |
Well, it was almost 50.5 -49.5.
|
Edgy DC Feb 25 2006 02:18 PM |
I think these threads should stay active. Next voter decides it (unless he or she goes 5-5), but if a later voter comes and changes the outcome, rankings may shift accordingly.

I am a firm believer in Celebrity Tithing. For example, John Travolta should tithe at least 10% of his post-Pulp Fiction earnings to Quentin Tarantino (well, the part he doesn't tithe already) for making him relevant again. Of course, Mr.Tarantino should burn in hell for that, too--well, that and the fact that he has disparaged The Who, unlike Who-phile Spike Lee, who is also a much better writer/director. But, I digress.
|
Johnny Dickshot Feb 25 2006 02:35 PM |
The way this goes I think we'll rarely have ties, but in the event we do, I suggest a rematch but only with say, 7 songs each, then 5 and so on.
|
Willets Point Feb 25 2006 02:50 PM |
On the other hand voting closes after 2 hours, and even with the long weekend that means this one was done on Tuesday and nothing after that counts.
