I'm on my way out the door... I'll put songs up when I get to work. I'll try to match 'em up well, era to era.

An all-Roth ten, I think. Has to do better than his radio show so far.

Why is there spandex and muscle tees all over this thread? Long gauzey scarves also.

I'm a sucker for "Mean Streets."

“Finish What Ya Started” is Hagar.

Good choices Doc, I like 'em all.

No wonder I couldn't figure out how it went.

Unchained rocks more.

seawolf17
Feb 17 2006 09:45 AM

Let's do this right. We'll match up the songs from VHI and II with songs from the first three Aero albums, a cover with a cover, Dance with Dance, Panama with an 80s staple, Hagar with a post-drug song, and the two W&C songs with two from the heavy drug years.

Toys In The Attic
Sweet Emotion
Walk This Way (w/Run DMC)
Love In An Elevator
Dream On
Train Kept A Rollin
Same Old Song and Dance
Draw The Line
Mama Kin
Come Together

Branding question: "Walk This Way": Isn't this more of a Run-DMC recording featuring special guests, composers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry?

I have to also add, in fairness, that --- like "Walk Thiis Way" --- my big loser, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" came off of the other artist's album.

The single was billed as "Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers." So it had (a) the brand name (though billed second), and (b) all the players present.

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic” VAN HALEN Oh yeah
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” vs. "Sweet Emotion" AEROSMITH
“Panama” vs. "Walk This Way" (W/O Run DMC)" AEROSMITH This would very easily have gone the other way if you hadn't taken RUN DMC out of the equation.
“Finish What Ya Started” vs. "Love In An Elevator" VAN HALEN Possibly the only post-Roth/VH song I like
“Jamie’s Cryin’” vs. "Dream On" AEROSMITH
“You Really Got Me” vs. "Train Kept A Rollin'" VAN HALEN Eddie knew which band to cover
"Dance The Night Away” vs. "Same Old Song and Dance" TIE Both very gay songs
“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line" VAN HALEN The scene in 'Beter Off Dead'
“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin" VAN HALEN - My personal theme song
"And the Cradle Will Rock” vs. "Come Together" VAN HALEN

VAN HALEN - 6.5 / AEROSMITH - 3.5

OE: "Hot For Teacher" instead of "Dance The Gay Night Away" would've made it 7.5 - 2.5.

We traditionally distribute half points for ties, not that it makes much of a a difference, so we should call that 6.5-3.5.

This is helping to prove just how great the early VH stuff was, Van Halen are the band looking for a new singer in the second season of the CBS show 'Rock Star', at least that's what Roth says.and apparently it's true, just some minor stuff to work out, how terrible an idea is that?, still I'll watch.

This is tough. On the one hand, I have a long-standing (and heretofore undisproven) hypothesis that everyone likes at least one Van Halen song, whether they try to act like they're too cool for VH or not. Even the mighty Aerosmith can't boast that kind of universal appeal. So for breadth, you gotta go with Halen.
On the other hand, both Dream On and Sweet Emotion are better than anything VH ever recorded. Depth goes to the boys from Boston.
I figure this comes down to longevity, and in that case, I gotta hand that to Aerosmith. But this might be the single closest contest in the history or head-to-head comparisons.

seawolf17
Feb 17 2006 02:11 PM

Everybody else involved with VH denies that rumor, and the latest word is that Dave Navarro is putting together a supergroup of sorts to look for a singer instead.

Regardless...

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic” -- AEROSMITH
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” vs. "Sweet Emotion" -- AEROSMITH
“Panama” vs. "Walk This Way" (w/Run DMC)" -- AEROSMITH
“Finish What Ya Started” vs. "Love In An Elevator"-- AEROSMITH
“Jamie’s Cryin’” vs. "Dream On" -- AEROSMITH
“You Really Got Me” vs. "Train Kept A Rollin'" -- AEROSMITH
“Dance The Night Away” vs. "Same Old Song and Dance" -- VAN HALEN
“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line" -- AEROSMITH
“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin" -- AEROSMITH
"And the Cradle Will Rock” vs. "Come Together" -- AEROSMITH

Aerosmith 9, Van Halen 1. (Always loved "Dance The Night Away.") VH had good stuff, but no staying power. And even some life-long fans can't agree which incarnation of the band was the best; overall, their career arc isn't even close.

Feb 17 2006 02:16 PM

Despite the fact - or maybe it's because of it - that neither band is a fave of mine I'm inspired to vote here. I think I'm just curious how my vote will come out.

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic” -- Tie

“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” vs. "Sweet Emotion" -- Aerosmith

“Panama” vs. "Walk This Way" (w/Run DMC)" -- Aerosmith with or w/o DMC though I much prefer the version with

“Finish What Ya Started” vs. "Love In An Elevator -- VH
LiaE is a crummy PoS

“Jamie’s Cryin’” vs. "Dream On" -- Aerosmith and it's not even close. Jamie's Cryin suxx

“You Really Got Me” vs. "Train Kept A Rollin" -- Aerosmith
Roth's cover versions always sounded like it was him dong Karoke, no originality whatsoever.

“Dance The Night Away” vs. "Same Old Song and Dance" -- Van Halen, I always liked that song and it made my list of top 30 1979 songs

“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line" -- Tie The best thing about Draw the Line was the Al Herschfeld's album cover art

“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin"
"And the Cradle Will Rock” vs. "Come Together"
Both ties ... I've lost interest again.

Aerosmith - 6 -- Van Halen - 4

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic”
I like both of these well enough; but Toys is higher up the Aerosmith food chain in my estimation than Girls is in the VH catalog. Win for Aerosmith.

“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” vs. "Sweet Emotion"
Aerosmith in a power struggle.

“Panama” vs. "Walk This Way" (w/Run DMC)"
Aerosmith by a slight margin.

“Finish What Ya Started” vs. "Love In An Elevator"
Hold your nose and vote. Hagar the Horrible sounds like he's trying so hard on the vocals on this one. Tie.

“Jamie’s Cryin’” vs. "Dream On"
Aerosmith.

“You Really Got Me” vs. "Train Kept A Rollin'"
Van Halen. A much better Invasion interpretation than Aerosmith's 'Come Together' below.

“Dance The Night Away” vs. "Same Old Song and Dance"
Diamond Dave's squeakiness and VH's Secret Weapon: Great background singing. Slifght edge to VH

“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line"
Al Hirschfeld album cover v. scene in 'Better Off Dead' ... edge to VH.

“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin"
VH.

"And the Cradle Will Rock” vs. "Come Together"
VH. Don't see what Aerosmith brought this cover

VAN HALEN 5.5, AEROSMITH 4.5

I'm probably in the minority here, but I happen to love the Sammy Hagar Van Halen years. Maybe it's because they coincided with my teens...I don't know. I just feel like I spent half of high school cruising around town with 5150 looping on the tape deck.

Aerosmith vs. Van Halen...I just can't choose. It's like being asked to pick between burgers and steak.

“Beautiful Girls” vs. “Toys In The Attic”
Aerosmith
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” vs. "Sweet Emotion"
Aerosmith - One of my favorite Aerosmith songs.
“Panama” vs. "Walk This Way" (w/Run DMC)"
Aerosmith
“Finish What Ya Started” vs. "Love In An Elevator"
=darkred]Van Halen
“Jamie’s Cryin’” vs. "Dream On"
Aerosmith - Unfortunately for Tyler and the gang, can't award but one point per match up. Dream On totally kicks Jamie's ass. No wonder Jamie's cryin'.
“You Really Got Me” vs. "Train Kept A Rollin'"
=darkred]Van Halen
“Dance The Night Away” vs. "Same Old Song and Dance"
=darkred]Van Halen
“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line"
=darkred]Van Halen
“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin"
=darkred]Van Halen - Closed out with two of Van Halen's best to anchor the line up.
"And the Cradle Will Rock” vs. "Come Together"
=darkred]Van Halen - A favorite from the Van Halen catalog.

A tough match up of two bands that aren't all that dissimilar. Van Halen squeeks out a hard fought victory.

“Everybody Wants Some” vs. "Draw The Line" -- VH
“Runnin’ With the Devil” vs. "Mama Kin" -- VH

Rockin' Doc
Feb 25 2006 02:00 PM

Well, it was almost 50.5 -49.5.

Where does a tie leave my entry? Since I was challenging Aerosmith, but failed to beat them I would imagine I fall to the bottom rung on the ladder. I believe that you should have to beat a band to bump them from their spot. Ties should go to the challenged.

Edgy DC
Feb 25 2006 02:18 PM

I think these threads should stay active. Next voter decides it (unless he or she goes 5-5), but if a later voter comes and changes the outcome, rankings may shift accordingly.

I think Dickshot or somebody should be the BLC administrator. I'll stick to doing the tables.

PatchyFogg
Feb 25 2006 02:34 PM

I am a firm believer in Celebrity Tithing. For example, John Travolta should tithe at least 10% of his post-Pulp Fiction earnings to Quentin Tarantino (well, the part he doesn't tithe already) for making him relevant again. Of course, Mr.Tarantino should burn in hell for that, too--well, that and the fact that he has disparaged The Who, unlike Who-phile Spike Lee, who is also a much better writer/director. But, I digress.

Aerosmith should be tithing to the members of Run DMC for putting them back on the map with the re-working of "Walk This Way." Instead, Jam Master Jay's widow is working at Banana Republic.

For that reason alone--and the fact that Van Halen has never employed hitmakers (Desmond Child, Diane Warren) to write songs for them os enough for me to vote VH.

Johnny Dickshot
Feb 25 2006 02:35 PM

The way this goes I think we'll rarely have ties, but in the event we do, I suggest a rematch but only with say, 7 songs each, then 5 and so on.

On the other hand voting closes after 2 hours, and even with the long weekend that means this one was done on Tuesday and nothing after that counts.
