"Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Pilgimage"
Because you can't, Robert, that's why. REM.

"Mint Car" vs. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
REM tried to write an epic with all the credibility in the world to lose and pulled it off. The Cure wrote a car song with all the credibility in the world to lose, and pulled that off. I'm calling this a slight win because of an enduring track. REM.

"Friday I'm in Love" vs. "Driver 8"
"Friday..." is Ms. Edgy's favorite. It always seemed too slick, perfect, and shallow to me. I may have liked it more as a Prince song. Dont' know why. "Driver 8" is what REM should've stuck with in my book. REM.

"A Letter to Elise" vs. "Radio Free Europe"
"Letter" sounds like a rewrite of "Pictures of You" --- a strong re-write, but still. "Radio Free Europe" launched REM on my ears, and I thank it with my vote. REM.

"Fascination Street" vs. "Man on the Moon"
The long tracks from Disintegration are the Cure at their best --- weaving extended biting countermelodies of yearning, without asking the indulgence of their earlier torture sessions. "Man on the Moon" sounds pretty tossed off for a single. =darkred]The Cure

"Lovesong" vs. "Fall on Me"
The long tracks from Disintegration are still the Cure at their best --- and "Lovesong" is the everything-perfectly-in-its-place single that is still much more nuanced than "Friday." "Fall on Me" is a tough one to vote against, because I think I once figured out what it meant. =darkred]The Cure

"Boy's Don't Cry" vs. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"
A blowout here. =darkred]The Cure

"Pictures of You" vs. "Orange Crush"
The comeback storms on. =darkred]The Cure

"Just Like Heaven" vs. "Pop Song 89"
Robert, let up! There's mascara everywhere! =darkred]The Cure

"Love Cats" vs. "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"
Tie!

The British take it 5.5-4.5 ina furious comeback over the Americans. REM seemed to go from interesting-obscure to gimmicky-obscure. The Cure has kept surprising me through many years and lineup changes (bring back Porl!) I didn't think they'd survive.

I have to recuse myself from this one. Shame on me, but I don't know The Cure all that well.

I'm not gay enough either. Never listened to the Cure but I did hear that once Iggy Pop destroyed a bunch of potted trees they had on their stage set during a festival where Iggy was to go on before them.

Except for 'Friday I'm in Love' - which loses to Driver 8' anyway - I don't know any of the Cure songs.
Or I might actually know them but I don't know that I know them and so I'd have to vote no on them or simply give no votes on those songs that I don't know.

ROBERT SMITH KICKS ASS!

Funny story - My mother was pretty young when she had my sister and I and thus unlike other parents was able to enjoy the same music we listened to well into my high school days. The first time she ever sounded like a typical parent was when she saw a picture of Robert Smith and sad "That man needs a cure!!!" At that moment she was officially old and out of touch.

In previous matchups, posters who didn't recognize songs voted against them. I don't think it's necessarily fair that who didn't know the Cure well enough should all go as 10-0 votes for REM, but it the fact that we have as many never-heard-of-ems as actual voters at this point oiught be recognized somehow, or the fanboys will take every contest.

There are no Cure songs that I even would recognize as being Cure songs. I'm willing to go listen to the snippets of the couple of Aerosmith or whoever songs that I don't know but when I know 0-to-3 songs I abstain.

Ok, listening to the snippets I did know some of those Cure songs. Therefore:

Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Pilgimage" CURE
"Mint Car" vs. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" REM
"Friday I'm in Love" vs. "Driver 8" CURE
"A Letter to Elise" vs. "Radio Free Europe" REM
"Fascination Street" vs. "Man on the Moon" REM

"Pictures of You" vs. "Orange Crush" REM
"Just Like Heaven" vs. "Pop Song 89" REM
"Love Cats" vs. "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" CURE

6-4 REM

Feb 27 2006 02:27 PM

Hadn't seen this before. Fun!

Before getting into the songs, my first thoughts are that I used to like the Cure, but there aren't many songs that held up well for me--I think REM's songs have aged better, although I was never that into them.

"Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Pilgimage"
REM

"Mint Car" vs. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
REM

"Friday I'm in Love" vs. "Driver 8"
The Cure

"A Letter to Elise" vs. "Radio Free Europe"
REM

"Fascination Street" vs. "Man on the Moon"
REM

"Lovesong" vs. "Fall on Me"
The Cure

"Boy's Don't Cry" vs. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"
REM

"Pictures of You" vs. "Orange Crush"
The Cure

"Just Like Heaven" vs. "Pop Song 89"
The Cure

"Love Cats" vs. "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"
The Cure

And it's a tie. Tie breaker goes to REM, as my first impression was that they aged better.

The Cure 4.5:5.5 REM

Edgy DC

REM has been strong in the first half of the draw, with the Cure storming back in the second. Balloters agree on this.

Johnny Dickshot
Feb 27 2006 07:18 PM

I'm sorry the Cure ever challenged REM and put me in this spot. I said I wasn't gonna root for my guys, but I just. Never. Liked. The Cure. Their vocalist makes me want to punch somebody in the face, they wine and cry alot but never generate my sympathy. There's something so artificial about 'em. This is going to look highly biased, and it probably is, so maybe we should score it 8-2 or 7-3 but the boxscore tells no lies.

Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Pilgimage"
--Wine, wine, wine. REM

"Mint Car" vs. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
--Too "trying too hard" songs here. REM

"Friday I'm in Love" vs. "Driver 8"
--The power lines have floaters so the airplanes won't get snagged. REM

"A Letter to Elise" vs. "Radio Free Europe"
--REM

"Fascination Street" vs. "Man on the Moon"
--REM. I put this one in mostly to get HahnSolo's vote, only to have him abstain. WTF? Still wins.

"Lovesong" vs. "Fall on Me"
--REM

"Boy's Don't Cry" vs. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"
--REM. Not getting the hate this one gets. The Monster album was a bad experiment but this song still rocks.

"Pictures of You" vs. "Orange Crush"
--I went with the Crush here to see how it would do. Not my favorite REM tune by a long shot. Then again, the 15 seconds of "Pictures of You" I get in a camera commercial are too muich for me. REM

"Just Like Heaven" vs. "Pop Song 89"
-- Mixed feelings about JLH. It had the same effect on chixx in college as the first notes as "Brown-Eyed Girl" but I don;t think I could really love a girl who jumps out of seat yelling "ahhh!" when this song came on. PS89 is pretty stupid too but I like it. REM

"Love Cats" vs. "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"
--Only Cure song I ever purported to like, and that was a long time ago, and it was a short time. It's opponent has help up better.

We need another voter or two in this one, it's too close, and I feel guilty.

REM holds a 41-39 lead.
