BLC: U2 v. Led Zep

HahnSolo
Feb 27 2006 02:20 PM

U2 challenges Led Zeppelin. Here is the U2 lineup (the same as used in its win over REM).
Note: the live version of The Electric Co. can be found on the Under a Blood Red Sky EP.

One
New Year's Day
I Will Follow
Where the Streets Have No Name
Vertigo
The Unforgettable Fire
The Electric Co. (live)
The Fly
Bad
Sunday Bloody Sunday

Mssrs Page, Plant, Bonham, and Jones, we await your response.

This is a pretty pure lineup matchup. Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Drums, with both vocalists rarely augmenting the instrumental lineup, and both with strong falsettos. U2 has a guitarist doubling on synth, Led Zep had a bassist doubling on mellotron.

I shook my lineup up a bit, adding my personal favorite Zep song, 'Boogie with Stu' and another classic that I hope will garner some votes - 'Misty Mountain Hop'

That's a fine looking list Soupcan. "Misty " is a classic, beats 'unforgettable fire' easy....

Ok, looks like I could be in some trouble here...

One vs. Going to California - U2
New Years Day vs. The Immigrant Song - slight edge to U2
I Will Follow vs. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Where the Streets Have No Name vs. Whole Lotta Love - heavyweight matchup, slight edge to U2
Vertigo vs. Down by the Seaside - U2
The Unforgettable Fire vs. Misty Mountain Hop - Now the trouble starts. Led Zeppelin
The Electric Co. vs. Boogie with Stu - For me it's close, but it's gotta be Boogie. Led Zeppelin
The Fly vs. Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
Bad vs. Black Dog - Interesting matchup in that neither is a real personal favorite. Slight edge to U2 because it inspires Edgy to beat up bad guys.
Sunday Bloody Sunday vs. Rock and Roll - I have this theory that every teenage boy in America goes through a Zeppelin phase at some point. Rock and Roll is the song that got me hooked on them. Led Zeppelin is the choice here.

I call it U2 5, Led Zeppelin 5. And since I sponsor U2, I think I might be in for a long day.

Vertigo vs. Down by the Seaside U2
The Unforgettable Fire vs. Misty Mountain Hop LZ
The Electric Co. vs. Boogie with Stu LZ
The Fly vs. Houses of the Holy LZ
Bad vs. Black Dog U2

One vs. Going to California
Zep. Love this song.

New Years Day vs. The Immigrant Song
U2.

I Will Follow vs. Stairway to Heaven
Eh. I'll call it a tie. Stairway's a good song & all, but overrated. Give me Tangerine or Since I've Been Lovin' You any day.

Where the Streets Have No Name vs. Whole Lotta Love
Good matchup. U2, by a hair. Incidentally, Whole Lotta Love was our HS prom theme song--in 1994. Crazy, right?

Vertigo vs. Down by the Seaside
U2. Not crazy about this Zep song.

The Unforgettable Fire vs. Misty Mountain Hop
Zep, hands down. Love this song.

The Electric Co. vs. Boogie with Stu
Zep.

The Fly vs. Houses of the Holy
Zep.

Bad vs. Black Dog
Zep.

Sunday Bloody Sunday vs. Rock and Roll
Good match-up. I'll call it a tie.

6-4, Zep.

Very tough for me. Big U2 fan and while I wasn't one of those kids with the Swan Song dude painted on the back of my jean jacket in high school I nevertheless appreciate the megawatt tuneage that the ZOSO boys threw out there.

One -v- Going To California U2 -Said it before, I'll say it again - nobody does a power ballad like U2
New Year's Day -v- The Immigrant Song U2 - Edge to U2 but this really could've gone either way
I Will Follow -v- Stairway To Heaven LED ZEP - Close but shit - its 'Stairway To Heavan'
Where the Streets Have No Name -v- Whole Lotta Love U2 -Close again, Joshua Tree was their best album and this was arguably the best song,
Vertigo -v- Down By The Seaside LED ZEP -Still not feeling the new stuff from U2. No contest.
The Unforgettable Fire -v- Misty Mountain Hop LED ZEP -A mismatch
The Electric Co. (live) -v- Boogie with Stu LED ZEP -My favorite Zep tune against a U2 song I tolerate.
The Fly -v- Houses of The Holy LED ZEP -It's no secret that 'Houses' swats this bug.
Bad -v- Black Dog U2 Mismatch the other way.
Sunday Bloody Sunday -v- Rock n' Roll LED ZEP Not a rebel song against the (now former) Cadillac jingle. I like those cars.
LED ZEP - 6 / U2 - 4

OE: What the hell's a 'Cadillac jungle'?

One vs. Going to California U2 both kind of overated songs IMHO
New Years Day vs. The Immigrant Song U2 Never liked "Immigrant"
I Will Follow vs. Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin I think voting against songs because they're overplayed is bad. There's a reason why "Stairway" is played a lot.
Where the Streets Have No Name vs. Whole Lotta Love Tie
Vertigo vs. Down by the Seaside Led Zeppelin
The Unforgettable Fire vs. Misty Mountain Hop Led Zeppelin
The Electric Co. vs. Boogie with Stu Led Zeppelin I love "Stu", great choice!
The Fly vs. Houses of the Holy U2 Like the album "House of the Holy" better than the song.
Bad vs. Black Dog Tie
Sunday Bloody Sunday vs. Rock and Roll Tie
Damn, talk about a couple of Death Matches! I declare the last two matchups as ties because I can't chose between them.

U2 4.5:5.5 Led Zeppelin

7 voters in and its a tight one. U2 leads 35.5 to Zep's 34.5

(I won't mention that without metIRISH and his extremely tainted 8-2 vote, Zep would have a 5 point lead)

One vs. Going to California - U2
--U2. Always found GTC boring

New Years Day vs. The Immigrant Song
--I knew a kid in high school who could do Plant's ah-ah-ahhhhh-AH! perfectly. Zeppelin

I Will Follow vs. Stairway to Heaven
--So sick of the latter. U2

Where the Streets Have No Name vs. Whole Lotta Love
--Zep in a walkover

Vertigo vs. Down by the Seaside
--Didn't think this Zepper would make a return, and shouldn't have. U2

The Unforgettable Fire vs. Misty Mountain Hop
--Great addition, Soupy. Led Zeppelin

The Electric Co. vs. Boogie with Stu
--Led Zeppelin

The Fly vs. Houses of the Holy
-- Led Zeppelin

Bad vs. Black Dog
--We used to fantasize about Black Dog becoming the new National Anthem, and all the trouble the singers would have before sports games with it. Zeppelin.

Sunday Bloody Sunday vs. Rock and Roll
--Wham. Edge to Zeppelin on Bonham's crazy stickwork

Final Score: Zeppelin 7, U2 3

]Wham. Edge to Zeppelin on Bonham's crazy stickwork

No, Wham's a band with George Michael and Andrew Ridgely. And I don't think Edge ever played with Zeppelin.
