Dickshot's bands under siege from the protogoths today.

Queen counters, brave but wary. "Hammer to Fall" is back in the lineup as "Death on Two Legs" is now "Death on its Ass." -- otherwise, the batting order has changed against the quirky delivery of the VU.

In 1972 as a sophomore in highschool I moved from Long Island to California, taking my Velvet Underground albums with me only to discover that no one knew who they were out there. I kept a lonely vigil for these guys and was happy to be vindicated years later. Queen, as I've already written, were just not that important to me. Some songs came on the radio that I would turn off, some I would leave on. VU rules. Leaving off "White Light/White Heat", however, is ridiculous.

Do band reps get to vote too? I'll cast my votes as impartially as possible.

No worries Rotty, everyone's been voting for the bands they sponsor.

Unfortunately I must abstain as I am too unfamiliar with Velvet Underground's library.

You totally should, soup! They're a great band. I guess a lot of folk on this board feel the same way, given the low turnout . . .

I recommend 'em more highly that Sufjan Stevens, if you're only gonna buy 1 record this week. What I love about VU is the quiet energy behind almost every song. They rarely rock out, but they're loaded with power.

Took an initial listen this morning on my commute.

Well, the only songs I felt I could swap out from the list were Beginning to See the Light or Guess I'm Fallin' In Love. Or Waiting for the Man, as it's not one of my biggest faves, but that's another one of their iconic songs. Anyway, I kind of view the four of those songs as a push. We'll see what happens over the next 24 hours--my set list will probably change during the next challenge. The new Sufjan Stevens, by the way, is amazing. But JD's right--get a VU album first. For a Sufjan Stevens fix, download a few tracks (legally) from here: http://www.3hive.com/2004/03/sufjan_stevens.php

Do not swap out "I'm Waiting for the Man." The other two can go, especially if "White Light/White Heat" is included.

Just like Femme Fatale and All Tomorrow's Parties are the Velvet Underground and Nico.
|

For what its worth I'm not enjoying 'Nico' nearly as much as I am Lou Reed.
|

Andy Warhol forced Nico on the Velvets for that first album. She only shows up on, I think, 3 songs and she never appeared with them in concert.

So is that it? 6 little votes and we're done?

I guess so. Weird. Been 48 hours. VU wins.
