Bump to get Elsters attention.
metirish Feb 28 2006 04:33 PM |
Great, he'll make us wait two freaking months, maybe this should have went in the Knicks thread :)
Elster88 Feb 28 2006 04:35 PM |
I take it back. I was actually playing by the rules and waiting my turn to challenge someone further up the ladder. Do I have to accept this challenge? What are the rules of precedence here?
Johnny Dickshot Feb 28 2006 04:41 PM |
You must accept the challenge. If The Police arrest you, they'll take your spot and knock you down one peg.
sharpie Feb 28 2006 04:56 PM |
That's why taking turns sucks. Taking turns should only apply to introducting new bands. You have to be able to challenge at any time (and must defend any legitimate challenge unless you're in the middle of a battle or you are going out of town) .
soupcan Feb 28 2006 05:08 PM |
I think you have to defend or else you lose by forfeit. It was my turn, I introduced a new band and challenged GNR. Right before my turn I was challenged (Led Zep) and accepted. What's the big deal? Throw up 10 songs.
Elster88 Feb 28 2006 05:08 PM |
I can run it...I just hate to lose and then be stuck behind the Police and then be unable to challenge who I wanted to challenge.
soupcan Feb 28 2006 05:11 PM |
Rock on Garth.
Elster88 Feb 28 2006 05:12 PM |
I need a little time to put the playlist together and gather links. Tomorrow morning at the latest.
Johnny Dickshot Feb 28 2006 05:16 PM |
Well I disagree that one should lose his ability to challenge up the ladder just because they lost a game. What's the point of that?
sharpie Feb 28 2006 05:19 PM |
No rule that you can't re-challenge the band in front of you hoping for better matchups. Also, is GNR quaking at the thought of the Police? Seems not so GNR-like.
Rotblatt Feb 28 2006 05:26 PM |
No, I think it makes sense. The idea is to create the correct order of bands, and if the Beatles bested the Jimmy Hendrix Experience, then the JHE can never be above the Beatles. Now, the Beatles can still go on to unseat the Doors & the Stones, THEN the JHE can try to best them to move up the ladder, but their place behind the Beatles in the pantheon of rock bands is already fixed. Eventually, we'll wind up with the "correct" order, even if during the sorting there are a few screwball bands slotted in the "wrong" spot. A more efficient method would be that every new band has to challenge from the bottom up and that they don't stop until they're bested, but that would get boring.
soupcan Feb 28 2006 05:28 PM |
These are the bands in front of GnR...
Elster88 Feb 28 2006 05:28 PM |
No quaking here. Just using common sense. Challenge accepted.

GNR is the best band of all time, even if no one else on this board realizes it. ;-) As for who I thought I was going to beat, there were two bands in your list that I thought even THIS board would realize were not as good as GNR. Please accept my tongue-in-cheek ribbing in the manner it is intended. Edit: And relax already. As I said 4 posts above the one I'm quoting, I need a half day to put everything together. Where's the fire?
Johnny Dickshot Feb 28 2006 05:36 PM |
Hmmm... I disagree with that, not that I think it's likely... There's prolly can be a contest where Edgy f's up his Beatles song collection so badly he'd lose to the Police. Now, he's gotta be given the chance to fight his his way back. And if Jimi wants another crack at the team who beat em, why not give it? They'll learn sooner or later.
sharpie Feb 28 2006 05:39 PM |
As I said earlier, if Jimi wanted to re-challenge the Beatles he can. What they can't do is hop over a rung on the ladder and directly challenge the Stones or the Doors (or the power Police list vs. an Edgy list chock full of Ringo songs).
cooby Feb 28 2006 05:39 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Feb 28 2006 10:25 PM |
Cripes, if Jimi lost to that crappy Beatles list*, he couldn't do any better with a different Beatles list.
Rotblatt Feb 28 2006 05:42 PM |
Well, that does make sense . . . But that would STILL mean that in the scenario above, The JHE would have to win a rematch with the Beatles before taking on the Stones, right? That makes the most sense to me. Otherwise, what's the point of having a ladder?
Johnny Dickshot Feb 28 2006 06:48 PM |
It's a fluid ladder, but it penalizes foolish climbs. Common sense will eventually rule the day.
cooby Feb 28 2006 08:55 PM |
Slash and Sting, ouch.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 09:08 AM |
I was only able to find snippets of the song rather than the song itself. This probably won't help someone who has never heard the song before.

We disagree on the best Police album. I could've just thrown all 10 songs frome Outlandos d'Amour up there and been pretty happy.
Rotblatt Mar 01 2006 01:31 PM |
I figured this would be a Police blowout, but to my surprise . . .
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 01:33 PM |
Just as in the first matchup, GNR getting beaten in the latter half of the list.

Rotblatt Mar 01 2006 02:47 PM |
Actually, you divide the room into two groups. One group drinks whenever Sting says "Roxanne" and the other whenever he says "Put on the Red Light."
sharpie Mar 01 2006 03:10 PM |
The "Roxanne" group would be drunker than the "put on the red light" group.

I wish there were some equitable, yet entertaining way of settling this debate--a contest of some kind, perphaps involving some sort of quaffable treats. Nothing comes to mind, though. Ah, well.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 04:02 PM |
BTW, the common rules I use are ladies drink at "Roxanne" and the guys at the "Red Lights" line.
Johnny Dickshot Mar 01 2006 04:03 PM |
Looks like 19 drinks per side in a 3-minute song. The 'Red Light' group is behind until Stink throws in that extra 'red light' going into the second chorus:
sharpie Mar 01 2006 04:08 PM |
Well the Roxanne side gets drunk first.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 04:11 PM |
Nothing to do with my happiness, I was under the impression that you shouldn't vote if you don't know all the songs.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 04:14 PM |
Yup. Even.
Frayed Knot Mar 01 2006 04:33 PM |
Anything that leads to drinking when a Police song (particularly an early one) repeats a line is destined to lead to massive intoxication.
sharpie Mar 01 2006 04:44 PM |
Cooby could do what Soupcan is doing with Velvet Underground and study up or she can do what I do and rely on snippets (which makes it, that little bit sounds pretty good and I (like/don't like) the other band's song so I'll vote (for/against) it. If, however, I don't know anything at all by either band I would abstain.

Actually I was going to ask my son last night if he has a Guns and Roses CD I could borrow, and if so I can listen to it. I can't believe I don't know any of them, maybe I do and just don't know the name, that happens a lot.

Appetite for Destruction has Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradise, Brownstowne, and Rocket Queen Use Your Illusion 1 has November and Don't Cry UYI2 has Estranged and You Could Be Mine Lies has Patience
cooby Mar 01 2006 05:20 PM |
Unfortunately, he doesn't have any.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 05:23 PM |
Not for me. For GNR. I'm just the sponsor.
Johnny Dickshot Mar 01 2006 05:25 PM |
Great attitude. The miracle of this contest so far is that it got Soupy to buy a VU record, made me download about 5 Tom Petty songs I'd forgotten how much I liked and tried -- not successfully as yet -- to get me to reconsider my hate for the Cure.
sharpie Mar 01 2006 05:29 PM |
Both with GNR and the Cure, two bands I never listened to when they were around, I was surprised by hearing the snippets how many of their songs I did know and in some instances the snippets made me want to hear the whole thing 'cause the 20 seconds kicked ass -- which is the point of those snippets I s'pose.
cooby Mar 01 2006 05:30 PM |
Elster, I would gladly do that, but the little snippets on Amazon aren't enough for me to recognize any of them
sharpie Mar 01 2006 05:40 PM |
I would think that most people here have a working knowledge of the more popular Santana songs or albums. If you're talking about Santana albums of the '80's or '90's, however, you might run into trouble.
Elster88 Mar 01 2006 05:42 PM |
2.00 for 2 songs on iTunes. I recommend Sweet Child O' Mine and November Rain as a starter kit. Those are my top 2. Or buy their most recent Greatest Hits CD, which was purely a money-making campaign, but does have most of the more popular songs. One of your kids must have a buddy who can loan (or burn) a copy of some stuff too.
cooby Mar 01 2006 11:14 PM |

No I don't really consider that real Santana
That's a thought, I don't think we have a CD burner right now but my daughter does. The last CD I asked her to make me was Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits, I'm sure she'd wonder about me if I asked for Guns N Roses... I'll do it!
sharpie Mar 02 2006 09:08 AM |
I'd like to hear Guns 'N Roses playing "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits."
seawolf17 Mar 02 2006 09:38 AM |
On the first album from the Bloodhound Gang, they do a funny commercial parody for a CD featuring Axl Rose singing "all your favorite sitcom theme song hits" (or something along those lines). It's called "Shitty Record Offer." You can hear part of it here.

Elster88 Mar 02 2006 04:33 PM |

You should take the majority of the things I post here in the manner in which I give them. Namely tongue-in-cheek. This being an internet forum however I understand that tone is very hard t convey and recognize.
Elster88 Mar 02 2006 05:11 PM |
True true. I overreacted to the word travesty. You have my apologies. As for GNR being a "flash in the pan", I guess they have to be considered a flash in the pan, since they only made music for about 6 years. But it was a hell of a run. Gooden-esque. But as you noted our contest allows a flash in the pan to compete since we only give 10 songs each. If we extended our contest to top 40 songs, the Police would probably win. Top 10, I don't think the Police should have a chance in hell of winning. But again it's all subjective. ROXXXXXXXXXX-ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE
cooby Mar 02 2006 06:44 PM |
Okay, it's killing me not voting in a Police ladder. Elster, here's what I did. I listened to your samples, and if I liked what I heard better than the Police song it matched up to, or if I just plain didn't like the Police song matched up to it, I voted GnR.
Elster88 Mar 02 2006 07:44 PM |
I disagree with that method, but like I said before, I'm not in charge here. I'm glad you listened to the snippets though.
