Cleric announces $1M bounty on prophet cartoonist PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani cleric announced a $1 million bounty for killing a cartoonist who drew the Prophet Muhammad caricatures, as thousands rallied across the country Friday and authorities arrested scores of protesters.

I tried to read "The Satanic Verses" last year. Got about fifteen pages into it and realized I'd be better off trying to read James Joyce.

I wanted to read it when it first came out, but at the time I was doing much of my reading on the LIRR and the subway. I was afraid to be seen reading it in public!

Having worked in bookstores, I can reasonably nominate "The Satanic Verses" is probably the most unread non-scriptural book out there.
