Soothsaying for Sixteen: Xorge Carrillo

It's no walk in the park, trying to become the first Xorge in big league history. I grind it out for four years in college, five more in the minors, show a little pop, and finally earn a chance at big league camp. Not bad for a guy from Tijuana with a name Edgy has misspelled in the roster thread since, like, forever.

So, that's great winter news, and I'm digging it while playing winter ball. And HEY, my team's good! We make the Caribbean Series final! And then I go and hurt my hand. It was feeling pretty xore, so I got an x-ray. FRACTURE! That's frustrating. But, you know, still! I got that camp invite! I'm on the radar! Right? Hello? Anybody? It's... Xorge... .

So peep into your crystal ball. What do you see for me in 2016?

Re: Xorge Carrillo

I was betting big on Xorge but he's not even in camp. Will have to kill it in Bingo after his returns, possible September call?

3 AB, 1 single, a coule innings behind the dish once we've clinched.

Career minor (and Mexican) leaguer who hit under .250 in AA last year. Has thrown out around 28% of runners trying to steal. For that, and maybe a tad better production, they could have kept my kid, Juan Centeno. I'm still pissed.
The only thing that might have made him interesting was a first name beginning with X.
But we already had Xavier Nady, so there's nothing special there, either.
I think Sandy will agree there's nothing special and Xorge will remain in the minors this year.

.048 / .130 / .095 // .226

Juan Centeno in 23 plate appearances in 2015. Let us endeavor to move on.

OK, as soon as I endeavor to compare apples to apples. That was his major league slash line. What was Carrillo's?
Oh, he doesn't have one.
So let's compare their high minors career numbers (Centeno's are .298/ .335/ .346 in 171 AAA games. Carrillo has none)
In AA, they look like this:
Carrillo 186 G, .263/ .333/ .367 and 28% success rate in catching base runners trying to steal.
Centeno 107G .283/ .332/ .346 and a 39% career success rate in catching base runners trying to steal.
You may remember that in his cuppa' with the Mets in 2013 (during which he hit .300) he was the ONLY major league catcher to throw out Reds' speedster Billy Hamilton.

The comparison is very close and IMO Centeno's better throwing and the fact he hits lefty gives him the edge.

And he is family, FAMILY! You don't stop loving someone when they leave the nest, do you?

Now I'll move on.

On the plus side, he'll totally have a handle on lunch and late-night dining options in the greater Binghamton area.

All who said nuttin' well there was nuttin' for Carrillo in 2016, but he will be back in camp this year, and lines up with a good chance to be the Vegas backup catcher.
