Soothsaying for Sixteen: Buddy Carlyle

Listen, that's twice I got invited to camp as a non-roster player, and that's twice I've pitched my way out of the minor leagues and onto the Mets roster.

Yeah, I got hurt, but I've been invited back as an NRI ... huh-gain, and the third time is money. That's my story for me in 2016, anyhow. What's yours?

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Buddy Carlyle

Maybe he was injured because of that odd looking pitching motion. (Or was he tossing a come-backer to first base?)

Anyhow, third time may not be a charm this year with the bullpen crowded. He may ask for a release rather than take his AAA assignment out of Spring Training, and sign with another organization.

He's recovering from a torn labrum and subsequent surgery. I don't think he's expecting to break camp with the team.

Won't appear this year as a Met. That's my prediction, man.

If he's lucky? No major family tragedies. Maybe a negative prostate exam?

He'll knock 'em dead with his variety show featuring topical comedy and audience participation. After he's released from the 51s, he'll be opening for Penn & Teller at the Rio. Wednesdays at 7, Fridays and Saturdays at 8.

Have you heard his Chris Walken impression-with-a-card-trick? It'll totally ruin you for any other Chris Walken impression-with-a-card-trick.

In addition to being very funny, completely accurate. Two-drink minumum!

I guess he sawed off the limb he was sitting on with that three run shot with a 1-0 lead in the ninth the other day.

We need outs, guys.

I came here to pay my respects in his memories thread. Where is it?

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Buddy Carlyle

The standard is to put any memories thread up once a guy joins another organization.

He might have asked for his release upon being delivered news of his cut. He may even have had a clause compelling the Mets to grant him a release upon request.

My parents saw Buddy Carlyle and his old partner Dana Eveland in the '70s. They seemed to like the act.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Buddy Carlyle

Released in spring training, just about everybody here predicted no Metly action.

What nobody predicted is that by May, he caught on with the Braves — not as a relief pitcher, mind you, but in the burgeoning field of "instant replay coordinator." Nice work if you can get it.
