Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

Edgy MD
Mar 08 2016 03:37 PM

Edgy can't help himself. He's a completionist. He's bought more Mets books than he can frankly read. And his completionism leads him to put up soothsaying threads for the Raywilly Gomezes of the world in order to have all potential Mets covered. But seriously? What's to predict? Will he be flotsam or will he be jetsam? Will he get zero plate appearances or nine? The difference, as they say, is negligible.

But then there's me. I'm Yoenis Cespedes, and I'm a big, crazy, slugging Cuban expat. I might slug fifty homers, or I might slug a cop. I might unleash spectacular throws from the centerfield fence, or I might unleash ravenous doberman pinschers in a park full of middle schoolers. WHO KNOWS WITH ME? I could be a disaster in centerfield, or I might steal home five times. I'm what they call volatile. Here, have a smoke.

So yeah, the range of outcomes with me is, as Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders will tell you, YOOJ. It's one thing they agree on. But it's my job to drive super-expensive and attention-grabbing automobiles, count my money, and play a little baseball once in a while, and it's your job to predict what my season will look like when the dust settles. I don't envy you. At all. VROOM!

Hey! I've heard of this guy.

Put me down for 35 homers and 105 runs batted in.

Hoping to round up on all of those numbers but also trying to keep things in perspective. Ultimately the opt-out will worry us all: That he takes it or that he doesn't. He's that kinda player.

.265/28/99. Worth it not least because he helps the hitters around him in the lineup.

Gets 5/120 from someone else with an opt out after 2 which he doesn't take, and a 6th year option that the team doesn't take.

There ya go. I'm with Ash. Why think small when all you're doing is thinking?

That's why I haven't jumped into any of these. I want them all to excel even past their potential so why predict anything less?
I'd put Conforto down for the 35 kaBOOMs you guys are giving Cespedes. Ha.

Well, he'll give David Wright a new barbecue recipe. And one day Lucas Duda's car won't start and he'll give him a lift to the ballpark.

Comes up limping into a cold night late in April and hits a game winning
home run. Rounding second the limping gets worse and we don't see him
again until late June. And what a late June it's going to be! And what a July,
and what an August. September? Maurice will rise from the dead and write
another song just. about. Yoenis!

So, what do you do with this guy?

He's a one man cannon of offensive potential about to be released at any moment, but that jogging show was not only utter bullshit, but so consistent with his act.

The steal of third was pretty consistent too. Like his most celebrated throws coming after misplays, it's like he has to dig a hole of indifference before finding the motivation to dig out with the full power of his machine of excellence.

You re-sign him after he opts out.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

Agreed. He's been a pretty consistent offensive force for over a year now and has earned long-term consideration from the Mets.

Yeah, he makes some head-shaking defensive and base running errors, but I feel his bat is necessary to compete next season and beyond...especially with the question marks now surrounding Harvey, deGrom, Matz and Wheeler coming back from injury.

If Conforto of 2016 was the Conforto of 2015, I might feel differently.

Well, that could depend on a lot of factors. Dollars and years and willingness to play right and such. Mostly dollars and years.

But that indifference ... it's a lot uglier a look when you're not hitting 30 homers, but instead hitting 18.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

I'd love to be confident going into '17 with an outfield of Conforto, Bruce and some sort of Laggy/Grandy platoon in center.

But looking at the performance of Bruce and Conforto right now, and given Laggy's injury history and the continuation of a Granderson decline due to age next season, it's hardly confidence building.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

I'll feel much better about 2017 if Cespedes is part of the team.

The Mets can go cheap at second base next year (letting Walker walk) and they'll save another $12 million if Bruce gets cut loose. I'd like them to use that money to get a yes from Cespedes.

He's a modern superstar through and through. I was listening on the radio and Howie started hammering him during the call, then for 5 minutes afterward.

The stolen base was okay but it seemed to cost Rivera a swinging strike which was very expensive.

I will say hte man tends to rise to the occasion like few others. A day after he failed in a GW situation he came inches from winning one in consecutive innings.

Guy's one of a kind.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

If they continue with him as their crowned prince of superstardom, I sure hope have get a manager who can get him to play hard, instead of one who talks like a no-bullshit guy but seems to brook a lot of bullshit.

Love you, Terry. Don't get me wrong.

And yeah, the steal of third put him the right spot but a few pitches too late.

Just realized tonight might be the last time we see Ces in a Mets uniform.

Whatever you do this offseason (which will not start for a few weeks yet), you have to bring him back.

I agree. The fate of Cespedes will be the first big story of the offseason. My guess (and hope) is that they negotiate an extension before he hits free agency.

Hafta have him back. He'd be a fool not to opt out, and unless he wants a 6+ year deal, they'd be fools not to sign him.

I think MFS62 takes this one, too, though his second-in-MVP voting guess kind of throws his prediction a bit off.

Well, since his name came up, can somebody tell me how it's pronounced? Every game I watched, they just called him Cespedes.

Familia's first name too, please

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Yoenis Cespedes

Yo-ennis.

Familia's first name is another story entirely. Nobody knows for sure. Gary Cohen calls him Jay-or-reese, but that can't be correct. I've heard other pronunciations as well, too many to try to list here. During the 2015 postseason, while being interviewed, Daniel Murphy referred to Familia as "Yoris", which is probably more correct. I'm surprised that nobody has asked him, "Hey, Dude! How do you pronounce your name?"

If there are any Twitter users among us (and I know there are) maybe we can contact Familia directly and get him to tell us how to pronounce his name?

How i pronounce his name largely depends on whether I'm angry at him at the moment. If I am, then i call him "Yo! Anus!"
