#9 seed UConn roars back in the 2nd half and holds on against #8 Colorado for a 74-67 1st round win.
Daniel Hamilton continues his post-season domination with 17pts/10reb game.
Go Huskies!

Re: NCAA first round

I have trouble paying attention to the first four days of this thing.
I have two brackets in Diamond Dad's annual pool and my interest
level in The Sweet Sixteen is only related to how many of the six-
teen I still have alive and kicking.

I have Wisconsin and Villanova winning it all. I think I pick Wisconsin
every year in at least one pool. One year...

Re: NCAA first round

The best part of the 1st round is the sheer number of games. For example, Providence-USC starts a mere 10 minutes after Kentucky's blowout of Stony Brook, so you won't have to watch a bad game like that for too long.

HEY.

I'm in Des Moines covering it for the university on social media. Feel free to follow along; I've been tweeting the past two days, and I'll be tweeting all night @stonybrooku, and posting on Instagram from all over the arena.

Re: NCAA first round

Looks like Buffalo lost, so there goes even the 1% chance I watch a game this year.

Well, I guess I could watch the women tomorrow. I don't think I quite understand why a sport most people don't actually follow, is subpar to the pros, and is mainly an excuse to get into a random tournament and gamble isn't just as into the womens' bracket.

Rutgers poaches Stony Brook hoops coach Steve Pikiell as Eddie Jordan's replacement. Good luck Steve, Contraxt details to follow.

Re: NCAA first round

Not entirely surprising that Pikiell left. There had been rumors for years that other teams were looking at him. Once we got over that AE conference championship hump, I figured it was just a matter of time. Nothing but great things to say about the guy.

Congratulations to Syracuse on an epic come from behind win to make the Final Four tonight!

Meanwhile, in a much smaller tournament, the Columbia Lions advanced to the CIT finals with a big win over NJIT. Roar!

I hope they lose their asses and never ever find them again in the darkest nights with their heads on a pole

Huh?
That was unexpectedly un-Cooby like.
Who "they"?
Why?
is it because they're playing Villanova, a Philadelphia team?

Wait. We can't just let this statement go. This is absolute gold.

First off, who is cooby referring to with "they"? Syracuse? Columbia? NJIT? [gulp] Syracuse fans?

And what specifically does that statement mean?

Does she mean that she hopes they will find their asses on not so dark nights when their heads are not on poles? What if it's a dark night but their heads are not on poles? Or vice versa?

And nobody seems to have any idea what to get Jimmy and Millie for their wedding present.

Not readily apparent which team won the CIT because there are no visible team names or logos.
But from the blue and white confetti, it looks like Columbia?
Right?

So what exactly does the winner of this (CIT) tourney get to do ... Chant: 'We're Number 96!! We're Number 96!!' ?

It is a nice tournament for schools that dont dominate kollege ball. CONGRATS! Screw Yale.

Re: NCAA first round

My alma mater is one of five original Division I teams in history to have never participated in the NCAA Tournament. They're also 0-3 in NIT games. I don't think they've every participated in the CIT.

Re: NCAA first round

While we're congratulating schools that won tournaments other than the NCAAs, time to give kudos to George Washington University which won the NIT tonight.
Both schools from which I have received degrees have won the NIT.
I received my undergraduate degree from CCNY and my Masters from the George Washington University School of Business.
CCNY is still (and will be) the only school to win both the NIT (which used to be the more prestigious tournament) and the NCAA Championships in the same year. They are now played at the same time and schools don't play in both. It is also the only New York City team to ever win the NCAA Championship.

Re: NCAA first round

Two tourney questions:

1) Unless you somehow finagled court-side seats (and to do so I'm assuming you'd have to either be a member of the NCAA or have some pretty damn good connections) why would anyone pay big bucks to watch a basketball game in a football stadium?
Even the seats there that aren't either at nose-bleed heights or so far away horizontally that it's essentially a binoculars required situation, are at such neck-craning angles that the game has to be largely a rumor from your location.
And I acknowledge not being a college hoops fan here - but, even if I were, $2.50 for most of the seats at these now-mandated mondo-FF sites seems overpriced to me.
But, Frayed, you need to be 'part of the atmosphere'! Fine, I'll soak up my atmosphere by spending the weekend walking around the site-city for three days, but then I'm viewing the game via a big TV with my butt cheeks either on a coach or on a bar stool.

2) Is there anyone who thinks, no matter how the final game turns out, the UNC is Not going to have it, plus at least a few dozen games with it, vacated if and when they ever get around to sorting out that whole mess there?
