Corporations are people!

After getting laid off from my previous job a few months ago, I decided to leave the NYC area to cut expenses, start up an LLC, and try to get some consulting work on my own. Got my first gig today, so I'm feeling legit.

If you need the services of a property/casualty actuary, you know who to call!

Good luck, and may your A/R Aging Report always be 30 days or less!

Where have you re-settled?

I applaud you sticking it to expenses.

Re: Corporations are people!

Thanks for all the good wishes.

The resettlement was from northern NJ to Cleveland. I'd bought a house in Cleveland last year while I was still in the corporate world; my brother and my SO both live there, and it's a city on its way up. Once I lost the job, I made the relocation permanent, because Cleveland is dirt cheap in addition to being a nice place. And it rocks.

My expenses haven't quite gone down yet, because I haven't rented out my condo in NJ. I'm fixing it up, and it should be ready in the spring (1400 sq ft, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, private garage, 45 minutes to Wall St. door to door via light rail and PATH or ferry, $1900/mo...I know this isn't a sales site, but feel free to PM me if you know someone who might be interested). I'm actually here in NJ this week tearing down some bug ugly wallpaper.

Still planning to continue traveling back to the NYC area every month or so because it's still home.

Consulting gig is with a company in Napa. I'll be doing most of the work from my home office, but I'm flying to California on Tuesday to meet with them for a couple of days and then spending the weekend in the Bay Area just for kicks.

Re: Corporations are people!

I just picked up a client in Lansing. Most of my work will be done on my dining room table here in Cleveland, but I'll get out there one of these days. 41F, put me on your calendar for dinner on some indefinite date in the future!

Congrats on starting this up yourself!

What town is the nj apartment in?

Re: Corporations are people!

It's in Bayonne, roughly in the geographic center of town. To get to NYC, it's a ten minute walk to the light rail to Jersey City, then either the ferry at Paulus Hook to Pier 11 or PATH from Exchange Place to the WTC. Bayonne just got a grant for a ferry that will go direct to NYC, though no word yet on when it's going to start up.

The post about the apartment was old, but it turns out that the place is available again. I'm now asking $1600 w/o parking. I have a private garage plus two outdoor spots. All three spots are currently rented, but my renters are aware that they can get bumped if someone takes the apartment and needs parking. So I'd ask an additional $120 for the garage, $60 for each outdoor spot. Right now, there's some furniture in the apartment from my old tenants - a leather couch, a coffee table, a couple of IKEA chairs, a dining room set, and a bed. I haven't gotten around to doing anything with that stuff, and I'd leave it there if a new renter wanted to use it.

For about a year, I had a sharing deal where my renter paid reduced rent but full utilities, and I kept the master bedroom/bathroom for myself to use whenever I came back to the area, which is usually about every 5-6 weeks. I'd consider doing that again.

And thanks for the congratulations, but I really haven't started much up...I consider myself more semi-retired than anything else. I've been getting about one big client a year, which is more than enough considering that I live pretty frugally.
