2016/04/08 IGT #3 Phils at Mets (Gayer Dame)

Several days from now, the Mets will attempt to win a home game. Jacob deGrom will toe the mound if he's not busy wearing a male's breastfeeding contraption. Jerad Eickhoff, hailing from Made-Up-Name, Tennessee, will toe the hill for the Philths.

I will be working from home so as to watch, or, that is my hope at least.

Holy crap. I used to say that the longest day of the year was the day after Opening Day. You know what sucks more?

The TWO off days following the SECOND game of the year.

Just fucking play baseball.

Re: 2016/04/08 IGT #3 Phils at Mets (Gayer Dame)

Philadelphia at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Friday, April 8, 2016
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets return home Friday for the first time since losing Game 5 of the World Series, although their opponent hardly resembles the 2015 Kansas City Royals. The Mets will raise their National League championship banner and then kick off their home slate with the first of three games against the Philadelphia Phillies, who are 0-3 for the first time in nine years.

New York began its season by splitting two games at Kansas City, including a 2-0 victory in Tuesday's contest behind Noah Syndergaard's six dominant innings. Jacob deGrom will look to deliver a similar performance Friday against a team that hit him well in 2015. The Phillies batted .313 in three games against deGrom, although they ultimately lost all three of those games as part of a 5-14 record against their rival to the north. Philadelphia's bullpen blew its first two contests against Cincinnati this week before the entire pitching staff was roughed up in Thursday's 10-6 defeat.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Philadelphia, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RP Jerad Eickhoff (2015: 3-3, 2.65 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (2015: 14-8, 2.54)

Eickhoff made eight starts for Philadelphia in 2015 after coming over in the trade that sent Cole Hamels to Texas, including three starts against the Mets. He went 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in those outings but really struggled against Michael Conforto (4-for-8 with a home run). This spring, the 25-year-old gave up eight runs and 15 hits (including four home runs) over nine innings.

After winning National League Rookie of the Year in 2014 and becoming an All-Star in 2015, deGrom is a trendy Cy Young Award pick this year. That said, the 27-year-old was scratched from one spring training start with a stiff back and endured some disappointing velocity last month as part of a spring in which he logged a 1.62 ERA in four starts. Among deGrom's notable splits from a season ago are his stellar home ERA (1.99) and his overall opponents' batting average against righties (.181).

WALK-OFFS:
1. With his first child due any day, deGrom has said he will fly to Florida if his wife goes into labor.
2. Mets OF Curtis Granderson has already struck out four times in eight at-bats this year.
3. Five different Phillies homered in the opening series, as the long ball accounted for nine of the team's 10 runs against Cincinnati.

You need to teach your kid to ride the 7 train. As long as John Rocker's not in her car, she'll pull through. Parents always underestimate the survival instinct.

I'm working from home today too, as I usually do on Fridays.

The bad news is that because the Mets are playing the Phillies the SNY feed will be blacked out in my area. I may have to see if I can figure out how to pay that $10 fee that would allow me to get the Mets broadcast.

I'd rather see Cabrera and d'Arnaud flopped until Cabrera warms up, otherwise, this lineup works for me.

No news yet on Mrs. deGrom, I assume.

Jacob has said that he'll leave mid-game if he gets the word, but he won't come in off the mound if the news comes during the top of an inning.

Met hitters look like they prepped for Eickhoff to be a little more locked in (first-pitch swinging, e.g.); unfortunately for them, he's been a little iffy with the control, if not quite "effectively wild."

Well, okay, so far, anyway; striking out Grandy on three pitches might put the lie to that.

Stairs is a bit like Keith, not your classic smooth announcer type but very knowledgable on hitting and, IMO, a pretty good listen.
Also he's originally from Nova Scotia (an oddity in itself) and lived in Maine during his off-seasons where he'd spend his winters coaching HS ice hockey.

Yup!

I pulled that off intentionally once or twice during softball games where I'd "miss" the pop-up and fool one of the runners who didn't know the rule ... but I'm not sure I've ever seen that in a ML game.

was one of those that had me going "what the fuck just happened" And then reconstructing it in my head. I didn't catch the infield fly thing, and then Wright dropped it and you're instantly thinking 'fuck' but then he ran at the guy hung up between first and second and I was all confused until I figured it out.

Mets did actually play that perfectly though. It's kind of funny that the wind seems like it helped the Phillies by keeping Wright from catching an easy one but actually it screwed 'em.

also, the Phillies are bad. I was remarking to my friend listening to the roster that it might be more beneficial to cheer the Phillies that are on your fantasy team than boo them for being on the Phillies as they're being announced.

Re: 2016/04/08 IGT #3 Phils at Mets (Gayer Dame)

This is the time of year when I delurk and make an annual posting, lol.

Great time at Citi Field today.

- I had an early morning meeting, so I couldn't participate in any tailgating activities. I left Westbury at 11:45 and was at the Citi Field exit on the LIE by 12:20. No traffic at all, surprising to me.

- Of course, my late arrival meant no parking in the main lots. Parked somewhere in Flushing Meadows, then boarded shuttle buses to Citi. Buses ran surprisingly efficient, once one bus was full, another one was there. Buses were new and clean.

- Missed the opening ceremony but made it in plenty of time before first pitch. Seats were in the first row in right field, right next to the foul pole.

- It was COLD with a few breaks of sunshine mixed in. Food lines were LONG so we opted for the shortest line we could find--the sausage, peppers, and onion stand. Good food to have on a cold day.

- They brought back the "Professor Reyes" bit, only now it's Cespedes doing the "teaching."

- The Ford car character race was as lame as it sounded, maybe even lamer. The fans in right field (near where the finish line was) loudly booed the whole spectacle.

- Speaking of the fans in right field, they got on Cedric Hunter, and the rest of the parade of right fielders that were put out there. Granderson was playful with us in right field, which everyone liked.

- Nice to see some runs put up on the board, even if the home run hasn't shown up much yet. Loved Walker, Conforto and Duda looked great, nice to see the Captain get a hit, and Cespedes seemingly is coming around as well.

- Loved Jim Henderson out of the 'pen.

- Crowd erupted when the Mets got their 10th strikeout, because that meant everyone got a free six inch sub from Subway!

- We DID hit traffic coming out of the stadium, but after all, it was a Friday in the middle of rush hour, whattaya expect?

My only regret was not being able to see the usual faces I see on Opening Day from here. Hope everyone who attended had a great time as well!

Yes, a fun but COLD time was had by all. We arrived early for our customary Opening Day tailgate party, enjoying visits from Kase, Ceetar, G-Fafif and many other friends. The game was great to watch, although we didn't realize until the ride home that deGrom has a lat issue. And beating up on the Phillies never gets old.

And I may finally be thawing out....

heh. I guess I left before G-Fafif got there. (waves from the future)

Great to hear from lundy, and I took a keen interest in his assessment of the Ford character race. Maybe it won't last the year.

It's funny how people can get behind a relatively half-baked idea if it's our own, but instantly sniff out the inanity in a borrowed idea.

I imagine this wasn't so much the case decades back when there was less ballpark-to-ballpark tourism and national baseball media, and so we were less sophisticated about other organization's gimmicks.
