Soothsaying for Sixteen: Travis d'Arnaud

Yeah, I done it. I done it good and you know it's true. Yeah, folks bitch about my throwing, but the numbers don't exactly indict me. I'm a big league catcher and my rate stats put me at or near the top of the heap. Question is, can I do it for a full season. I know you're asking that. Well, you need to show some guts and answer it yourself. I'm kinda busy.

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Travis d'Arnaud

Travis gives a $50,000 quote in today's Kevin Kernan column, insisting he's done experimenting with his batting stance.

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks but the one who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

Can you believe the irony? I don't think I have ever seen a guy who looks so different from one turn at bat to the next in my life. The quote I think of with TdA is from Jim Carroll:

"One night she's dark and french/One night she's blonde and Dutch/Every time I'm near her, she has a differing touch. "

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Travis d'Arnaud

I blame the hitting instructor for that.

To d'Arnaud's credit, he hasn't been striking out a whole lot (29 K's in 166 AB isn't bad). The problem is that he's been getting absolutely nothing on his swings (9 xbh in 166 AB). I get the feeling (much like Conforto) that he's been too banged up for most of the season to get anything going. Perhaps last night was the beginning of a turnaround, but I'm more optimistic about next season than this one for him.

I think of a quote from Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil (by way of Paul Revere & the Raiders): "The kicks just keep getting harder to find."

As they say, if his hitting and throwing was as good as his quoting ......................

I expect Kevin Long's future with the Mets to be short.

And notably, the Mets went without a catching instructor this season.
