Soothsaying for Sixteen: Rafael Montero

I was nobody. And then I was somebody. I was a prospect. I came up on the same day as Jacob deGrom. He prospered. He became a thing. A big, BIG thing. And I... I'm still trying to stick.

But that's the way of things! Making the jump and beating the odds and staying healthy... that's all hard. You can't just compare me to that guy! I think it's all gonna fall in place somehow, and I'm pitching to make that happen. Your rotation of the future is too domestic, I think, and needs a little Dominican blood.

So what's gonna happen?

Hard to predict with this guy but let's be optimistic.

He does good in Vegas and gets a handful of OK starts and relief stints. 1-1, 3.50 in 12 games

Re: Soothsaying for Sixteen: Rafael Montero

His primary weapons when he was having success in the minors were his control and command. If he can recapture them, he will be starting for someone in the majors by September (when Wheeler returns, he will be prime trade bait). He doesn't have the lights out stuff of the other Mets starters (his fastball topped out in the low 90s last time I read about it). Actually, he had Bobby Jones type stuff. It was good 15 years ago, but the bar has been raised. So, it he doesn't recapture his prime weapons, I don't see him other than a middle inning pitcher.
Tough call now.
I'll go for the middle - 15 Games, 55 IP, 1.38 WHIP, 4.39 ERA.
