Soothsaying for Sixteen: Rafael Montero

I was nobody. And then I was somebody. I was a prospect. I came up on the same day as Jacob deGrom. He prospered. He became a thing. A big, BIG thing. And I... I'm still trying to stick.

Hard to predict with this guy but let's be optimistic.

His primary weapons when he was having success in the minors were his control and command. If he can recapture them, he will be starting for someone in the majors by September (when Wheeler returns, he will be prime trade bait). He doesn't have the lights out stuff of the other Mets starters (his fastball topped out in the low 90s last time I read about it). Actually, he had Bobby Jones type stuff. It was good 15 years ago, but the bar has been raised. So, it he doesn't recapture his prime weapons, I don't see him other than a middle inning pitcher.
