I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Edgy MD
Apr 08 2016 05:07 AM

St. Lucie that is. I love 'em particularly when they're down 4-1, but then rally in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, only to have Jupiter tie it in the seventh. What to do? How about a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth by Amed Rosario, his third hit of the game?

Re: I Love Lucie

I love the minor league team, sure, they are Mets of a sort.

The park? Meh. We made our first trip there in March and I was underwhelmed by it. The sight lines were nice, but it's really a no frills kind of place. Minimal amount of snack options and no Mr. Met. We get a much better night of baseball here in the 'Cuse for our AAA games than we did in PSL, and for less money to boot.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

The Lucites, stand firm in a three way tie for first, owning a 14-11 record in the Florida State League South Division. They leave no doubt who the prospects are, with Wuilmer Becerra hitting everything in sight, though without much power as of yet, and Amed Rosario suddenly living up to early scouting assessments and more, pretty much doing it all, batting third, hitting for average, leading the team in power, stealing bases, and playing some slick shortstop. Both are sporting chin beards, so Abe Lincoln is well represented. Amed is still the youngest guy on the team, though they recently swapped out Patrick Biondi for Raphael Ramirez, who shares Amed's 1996 pedigree. The kid seems overmatched so far, skipping the South Atlantic League, but we'll see.

They're a good team, but shallow, particularly in the pitching department, so their losses tend to be blowouts as they go deeper and deeper into their pen to lesser and lesser effect. So they sport a winning record with a losing run differential. The future will tell if that can hold up.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Bucerra got two hits tonight and is now hitting .400.
He had missed a few games, then when he returned to the lineup he was the DH.
But he started in RF tonight.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

St. Lucie is still a tale of Amed Rosario, who is looking more like a star every day, and Wuilmer Becerra, who simply cannot be retired, despite the lack of power thus far.

But also worth noting is an absolutely Indomitable bullpen. The squad has thrown 113 2/3 innings thus far, logging a 4-2 record with eight saves and a 2.30 ERA. They've struck out 107 and walked only 34. Subtract a single abortive mopup appearance by starter Scarlyn Reyes (a bullpen interloper!) and that ERA drops to 1.88

Learn those names: Baldonado, Coles, Griset, McGowan, Paez, Peterson, Taylor… some of them are gonna be bringing it in the Mets pen soon. Congratulations to Ted Cruz-faced pitching coach Marc Valdes.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Lucie is still about great bullpenning, Amed Rosario, and Wiulmer Becerra, but recently a new hero has arisen in one Kevin Taylor. The indy league reclamation project has played most every day, alternating between left, first and third, thumping to the tune of a .323 / .437 / .455 // .892 slashy slashy line. He's in something of a slump, going 5-33 over his last 10 games, so you can imagine how lofty he was before that.

Among the awesome bullpen numbers, I particularly want to call attention to the Eckerslevian line of one Kevin McGowan: 23 innings, one walk 27 strikeouts.

Not shown in the numbers below is tonight's result, in which the Lucies won 2-1, despite getting out-hit 9-4. That doesn't sound all that different from how the Mets have been winning of late, when they have been winning. The Mets of the Florida State League have won but four of the last 10, but still hang on in a first place tie at 24-21 in the FSL South Division, along with the villainous Jupiter Hammerheads, with the Bradenton Marauders and the Fort Myers Miracle but a single game behind. IT'S A DOGFIGHT DOWN THERE!

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

You know where that Orlando shooter hailed from? That odd little burgh that the Mets call their springtime home and that their Florida State Leaguers represent all season long. But you know, his neighbors reported him to the FBI, so no matter what Donald Trump tells you, not all St. Luciens are bad.

Among the good guys, Wuilmer Becerra still provides punchless offense, while Ricky Knapp anchors the staff, despite low strikeout numbers. The bullpen has been a revelation, with seven relievers posting an ERA under two, four of those under one, and Paul Paez leading the way with a 0.00 figure. Small sample size, you may say. Go ahead and say it. But he's thrown 17.2 innings over the course of nine games, and that ain't nothing.

It's him and people like him that led the team to a 34-31 first half record, good for second place, 2.5 games behind the Bradenton Maulers. I think we ALL know who is going to get mauled in the second half.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Congratulations to St. Lucie first baseman/outfielder Kevin Taylor, the Florida State League's Player of the Week. Taylor went 13 for 31 with two home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored. POW!!

KT is tied for fourth (with teammate Tomás Nido) in the league with a .309 batting average, and is second with a .393 on-base percentage. He leads St. Lucie seven home runs and 34 RBIs.

Best thing about Kev is that he's found money, having been signed by the Mets just this offseason after playing in the American Association with the Laredo Lemurs. He's only 24! There's still some baseball in him!

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Catching up with St. Loo, a lot of comings and goings leave them fishing to rediscover their identity. David Thompson hasn't yet found the magic he had working in the South Atlantic League. Not so much as Amed Rosario has carried his production on after jetting off to Binghamton, certainly. Wiulmer Becerra still searches for his power stroke, though otherwise hitting fine. The offense is really leaning on Kevin Taylor.

The pitching is something else. Limping through much of the season with four starters on the DL, they've mostly been able to carry on. P.J. Conlon has certainly picked up where he left off in Columbia. And Ricky Knapp is walking around with seven wins and flirting with a sub-2.00 ERA.

The team has won six of their last 10, having finished in second place, 2.5 games out, in the first half of the season, they now sit in third place, 2.0 games off the pace in the second half.

Becerra, catcher Thomas Nido (Mets catchers are hitting at every level this season), and Amed Rosario represented the team in the FSL All-Star Game. Nido got one of only four hits for the North squad in their 1-0 loss. The team aided Orland relief efforts in the wake of the devastating shooting last month, hosting a unity circle and sponsoring a blood drive.

Sock it to 'em Wiulmer!

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Wiulmer Becerra may be making the strongest Mets beard statement since Angel Pagan.

Rosario may be making the weakest one since José Reyes. His beard makes him look a dozen years older than he is, and not in a good way.

Re: I Love Lucie in Twenty Sixteen

Trading off the world, injuries in the big leagues, and other realities left the Mets with far less winning in their farm system than in recent years, particularly at the top level. St. Lucie holds all the Mets chips for minor league post-season glory, having won the Florida State League's South Division's second half division race.

Sadly, they fell 11-6 in the playoff opener against Bradenton, as Chris Flexen got hit hard. This wasn't due to lack of effort from David Thompson. David, coming off a breakthrough year in Columbia and St. Lucie (95 RBI in just 116 games!) went 3-5 with two doubles in the loss.

Hopefully the fates will smile sweeter today behind the efforts of another breakthrough player, pitcher P.J. Conlon. Belfast child P.J. has followed a stunning first half in Columbia (8-1, 1.84 ERA in 12 starts with 61 strikeouts against only 10 walks in 78.1 innings) with perhaps an equally accomplished second half in the FSL (4-1, 1.41(!), in 63.2 innings over 11 starts, striking out 51 and walking 14).

Did I say perhaps? Perhaps is bullshit. P.J. rocked. And you'll be rocked also if you tune in tonight for Conlon's post-season debut. This guy has Sterling Award written right across his face.
