Vegas in Twenty Sixteen

We have a roster, and more depth than I would have suspected, considering the graduations and trades of 2015. Big surprise (to me, anyhow) is that Gaving Cecchini is opening with the team, which for the time being, seemingly consigns Matt Reynolds to utility duty.

Notable in his absence is Jayce Boyd, leaving the fifth outfield slot to utility guy Ty Kelly. Last-minute signee, Puerto Rico's own René Rivera joins a depleted catching staff.

Rafael Montero got the bump for opening day, giving up two runs (one earned) over five innings. Dilson Herrera batted leadoff with Brandon Nimmo in the nine-hole.

(Anybody got any skinny on Duane Below? I can't find where he was assigned. Extended spring training?)

Hey, Duane Below has surfaced. I guess he was allowed to float for a few weeks in the minor league purgagory that is extended spring training. He's now four starts into his season and… not doing so hot. The strikeout/walk numbers are pretty good, though, so hopefully the contact numbers will level off. The starting pitcher that is really cooking up a storm is Sean Gilmartin, and he may be rotting on the vine a little by staying in the minors at this point. He and Gabriel Ynoa are just knockin' em dead. The rest of the rotation has PCL Disease so far.

In the bullpen, it's feast or famine, with everybody either lights out or failing utterly. Unfortunately, most of the guys struggling are the ones who started the season closest to the majors — the big league vets and the 40-man rosterees. They won't hold that roster spot for long if things keep going the way they are. Alvarez, Goeddel, I'm looking at you.

Guys on offense most jonesing for a callup include Travis Taijeron (again), Dilson Herrara, and that damned Ty Kelly, who just won't stop hitting safely.

Like the PCL team that they are, when the 51s win, they tend to win big, and when they lose, they’ve had some clunkers. But they’ve taken nine of their last 13, sitting a cool game a half behind division co-leaders Salt Lake and Albuquerque. They have a month before meeting either of them again, so it’s back to the grind. Rafael Montero goes tonight against the recently optioned Chris “No-No” Heston of the Sacramento River Cats.

Duane F. Below went seven scoreless innings tonight as your LV51s took a 12-0 shutout into the ninth before Dario Avarez coughed up four runs.

Big whoop. A blowout it still was. Below gave up only three hits, walking one and striking out five, Dilson Herrera hit his eighth homer, T.J. Rivera collected three hits, upping his average to .339, and three more were registered by Ty Kelly, elevating his mark to a Williamsanian .404.

Kelly leads all of affiliated baseball in batting average, because awesome.

As noted, with the exception of a 12-10 loss to El Paso earlier in the week, the pitching is really beginning to setlle in, with Below finding himself, and Rafel Montero being named the Pitcher of the Week.

Between roster shuffling and Gavin Cecchini being not quite ready to activate, the team went into tonight's game with only a three-man bench. No matter, as they won 8-5. Those numbers you see below don't include tonight's game, but Ty Kelly (clearly a decendent of both Ty Cobb and King Kelly), netted three hits, including two doubles, UPPING his average to .413. FOUR THIRTEEN!

Calling up a guy who isn't on the roster can really kneecap a AAA manager. If reinforcements don't come in time from AA, he frequently enters the game down two guys, losing the guy who was promoted and also the sap who goes into DFA limbo for a few days.

It'll be interesting to see if Alvarez is lost on waivers. His ERA is an ugly sight but his stratospheric strikeout numbers suggest he still has a live arm.

If you feel bad for Harvey, check out poor Stolmy Pimentel. He is keeping it in the park, but the walks and base hits are eating him alive. He's failed as a starter, failed as a reliever, and his ERA is The Battle of Hastings.

Anyhow, the bullpen has mostly held as The Backman Bunch has won six of seven games this past week, moving into first by a half a game in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division.

The 51s held off Tacoma 6-5 today. Eric Campbell hit a two-run homer in the first and was walked his next three times up.

Four games seperate them and the first-place El Paso Chihuahuas.

I shouldn't have taken a few weeks off from updating Vegas. We missed the big Stolmy Pimentel release! Stolmy, you may recall got tossed from a spring training game after deliberately throwing at the next guy immediately after a Randall Grichuk homer. He had an ERA over 10, going from the starting rotation to the bullpen to the woodpile. Better luck in the future, Stolmy.

Aside from the much-reported ascent of Brandon Nimmo, Las Veas is also the home of an unblemished Josh Edigin ERA and some MVP-ish numbers from outfielder Travis Taijeron and infielder T.J. Rivera, thought the latter is currently DL'd.

The 51s currently sit five games off the pace in the PCL Southern Division, and have way too many relievers with stratospheric ERAs. At least one or two of those guys have a DFA in their futures, when the Mets have a need to give those roster spots to Cuban infielders or wayward knuckleballers.

You know what's weird about Vegas, besides everything else that's weird about Vegas? The catchers, as a rule, hit. Not just the bat first guys, but everybody who straps on the equipment for the 51s has pounded the ball. Ashley, d'Arnaud, Glenn, Monell, Plawecki, and Rivera, without exception, have raked, to the tuned of .297 / .372 / .505 // .878 combined. That's like an all-star left fielder's output. With 21 homers total.

Dilson has cooled off, but he's still got 12 homers, and there's .300 hitters everywhere. T.J. Rivera returned from the DL in the same MVP form he was sent there with, prompting the release of Danny Muno. Ty Kelly has also been unstoppable.. Rivera's MVP rival.

Gabriel Ynoa has impressive win totals, but his 57 strikeouts in 109 innings probably don't have the Mets chomping at the bit to get him into the rotation.

The team is like the parent team, floating just out of reach of the shark at the top of the division, losing their last two and five of their last 10, leaving them four games above .500 and five behind those yappy El Paso Chihuahuas.

Gsellman returned from injury last night and didn't have it: 5 ER in 3 innings. Conforto went deep, 3 for 5, drove in 3. For whatever batting average is worth, he's hitting .340.

Pitching shortages, providing replacements for the Mets, and reality are combining to create a sucker punch for Wally Backman and the best hopes of Las Vegas. The 51s have lost seven in a row, 10 of the last 12, 14 of the last 18. T.J. Rivera has been a big player for them as the PCL batting average leader, and he will be missed, but it's no small thing to get Conforto back in the exchange. Brandon Nimmo takes over the banner as the circuits hitting percentage pacesetter.

Last year's Sterling winner Roger Gsellman, had another fine start in Bingo, but got hurt (quad) shortly after his call up to Las Vegas, and his time in the desert has been a mix of ineffectiveness and disabled listiness, but he's been sharp his last several times out, and folks are hoping for a strong finish.

Travis Taijeron's 81 RBI is third in the league, behind the astounding figure of 103 being put up by Kyle Jensen of the Reno Aces.

The Mets, likely despairing of finding a better situation, sign an affiliate agreement extension with Las Vegas for two more years.

"Anytime your Triple-A team's across the country, it's tough to get players here," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "The only thing that's good about it, there's enough flights out of Vegas late at night. They are the red-eyes, but they still get them here the next day. But that situation is what it is. I don't have anything else to say except we hope those flights keep going."

The flights *are* better and more numerous to NYC/elsewhere than from most every other AAA city, that's true. It's just a shame that the facilities apparently suck and the conditions are weird.

Was thinking it would be be cool if they got a club in Montreal.

In about as much of this sort of drama as the Pacific Coast League can provide, T.J. Rivera, entering the final game for Las Vegas batting .350, collected three hits to win the batting crown off of his next-closest rival, teammate Brandon Nimmo.

Rivera's three knocks raised his batting average to .353, while Nimmo's 1-5 lowered his rate to .352. It sure gives them something to talk about on the plane to Cincinnati. Third in the league was also a Las Vegas 51, infielder Gavin Cecchini, who hit .325, and will also be joining his teammates on the plane.

Michael Conforto (.422 in 128 AB), Eric Campbell (.301 in 302 AB), and Kevin Plawecki (.300 in 190 AB) also hit .300 but failed to qualify for the batting race.

As might have been suspected, Pedro López, manager of the Binghamton Mets for the last five years, has been promoted (such as it is) to take Wally Backman's place as manager of the Las Vegas 51s.

For his years of service, López will be spared the indignity of being a Rumble Pony.
