Injuries 2016
Frayed Knot Apr 08 2016 11:36 PM |
Cubs OF/DH/C Kyle Schwarber has been diagnosed with a torn ACL & LCL in his left knee and will miss the entire 2016 season.

Benjamin Grimm Apr 08 2016 11:39 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
Wow!
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 09 2016 12:23 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
That guy was not meant to be an outfielder. PLay looked awful.
|
bmfc1 Apr 09 2016 12:34 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
We saw how bad Schwarber looked in the playoffs but two of the alleged smartest people in baseball, Epstein and Maddon, put him back out there rather than be happy to have a mediocre defensive catcher who would have been the 2d best hitting catcher in the game.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 09 2016 12:51 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
I suppose the good news for the Cubs is that he didn't take Fowler to the DL with him.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 09 2016 01:09 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
Or his brain.
|
Zvon Apr 09 2016 04:57 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
This sucks. But he was such a bad outfielder. We've touched on it before. I'm really surprised they didn't find another place for him. Hope he comes back and has a nice career vs. everybody cept the Mets. I collect his baseball cards.
|
Rockin' Doc Apr 09 2016 01:50 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
I don't know how adequate Schwarber is defensively as a catcher, but he definitely is a poor defensive outfielder. He either needs to become an adequate catcher or possibly learn to play first base, where the Cubs are pretty well set with Anthony Rizzo. If he can't find a position where he is a marginally adequate defensive player, then his future appears to be as a designated hitter in the American League.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 11 2016 04:42 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
|
Not. And that's their bigger problem; he's essentially a 1B/DH on a team that already has a star 1B and in a league that only uses a DH in 10% of their games. Meanwhile, Braves reliever Dan Winkler broke his arm throwing a pitch in Sunday's game vs StL I remember Dave Dravecky doing that but his arm had already been weakened (and was later amputated) due to cancer.

It was back spasms with Asdrubal.

John Cougar Lunchbucket May 25 2016 08:32 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
Was it ever revealed how Duda managed to break his back?

Beat guys say Cabrera expects to be back in the lineup Friday.

MFS62 May 26 2016 02:03 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |

First Wright, then Duda, now Cabrera - they all have back problems. Maybe its just that dealing with the New York press can give you a pain in the ass? Ohhh, one more thing. That soap shaped like flowers in your bathroom. Can you use it, or is it just for show? (that's a line I remember from a Columbo episode) Later

Frayed Knot May 27 2016 12:28 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |

So the fielding crash between Gordon & 3B Mike Moustakas which broke Gordon's wrist has now claimed another victim. Moustakas, who was previously thought to have just a sore knee, in fact has a torn ACL and will likely miss the remainder of the season. THAT was one costly foul ball (especially since the crash knocked the ball loose and they didn't even get the out).

I've been watching some old Columbo's on meTV. I might watch one a week. It depends on who the guest bad person is. One was on the other night that was a gem of an episode. Ruth Gordon was a writer/MURDERER and she and Columbo played cat n mouse. I also recently saw one I never saw before and it was most interesting because the murderer was from another country and had diplomatic immunity. I don't know if Columbo ever did this before or after, but like 15 minutes into the episode he told his commanding officer that he was convinced the diplomat was the murderer and he would prove it (he was being taken off the case at the time). To the best of my recollection he always held all his cards close to his vest until the end when he turned the tables on the criminal. We knew that he knew but I don't recall him ever coming right out and saying it early in the episode. In the 3rd or 4th act he actually told the murderer himself that he knew he did it and although he knew he couldn't arrest him, he was going to find the evidence. I won't say how it turned out because you should try to see that episode if you haven't. It was really good. There's actually a statue of Columbo and his dog in Budapest, Hungary. Puts me in mind of the Wright/Davis collision, a seemingly mild crash that ended up costing the team months of both of them. From one perspective neither was ever the same either.

Sounds like Wright will decide later this week whether to get neck surgery.
|
TransMonk Jun 15 2016 04:12 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
I kinda hopes he opts for surgery. Not that I want him to be out, but it would at least give the team a definite answer as to their needs for the rest of the year rather than spending the summer with questions on if and when he will be available.

Edgy MD Jun 23 2016 03:44 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
About as good a set of news as you had any right to hope for. Céspedes is day-to-day and Syndy's MRI has shown no structural damage and he's being treated with anti-inflammatories.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jun 23 2016 04:03 AM Re: Injuries 2016 |
Wheeler, too: no structural damage; sensory nerve issue, treated with cortisone shot and a couple of days' rest before getting back on the throwing-routine cycle.

Worries about Thor. They always underplay things.

Ceetar Jun 23 2016 01:50 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |

who knows, maybe Thor being proactive and honest about aches is actually preventative.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 23 2016 05:43 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
|
This is precisely why Terry would have preferred to keep things under wraps. now whenever Syndy has a bad day, and even when he doesn't, he'll face questions about the elbow. Not saying the team should have succeeded in that, just that injuries are such a messy thing to endute.

Where does Lagares stand?
|
Edgy MD Jun 25 2016 01:20 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
I think typical time for that sort of injury is six-eight weeks, so I would guess we'll look for him around the time of the trade deadline.
|

It's almost like it would be easier to keep track of who's not DL'd,
|
Edgy MD Jun 25 2016 02:38 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
The funny thing is that they haven't called up an outfielder all season. Bumps and bruises though there have been many, the only Mets outfielder that has hit the disabled list has been Lagares, and the Mets replaced him with an infielder in the person of Ty Kelly, and subsequently replaced Kelly with a pitcher.
|
Ashie62 Jun 25 2016 10:31 PM Re: Injuries 2016 |
Concerned about Matz's elbow. He referred to it as being tight but "nothing unusual."

I've spotted Barwis once or twice in the dugout during the Yankee series. It seems a little unusual. It's certainly the first time I've recognized him. Aren't you only supposed to have two members of the training staff out there?

Hopefully, if he does come back this season it will be with close to two weeks left in the regular season. If it takes longer than that, would the Mets consider activating him directly to a post-season roster after not playing for about five months?

Other double digit missed game streaks: d'Arnaud = 50 Duda = 107 Walker = 33 Cabrera = 17 Wright = 115 Cespedes = 14 Lagares = 16 + 47 Flores = 16 + what's looking like the final 20 Reyes = 17 Ruggiano = 15 + 34 Matz = 45 Harvey = 80 Niese = 37 and then consider that Reyes, Niese, and Ruggiano weren't even on the team from the start, so their combined 103 games missed is out of a possible max of only 195
