Re: IGT 4/13 Marlins v Mets Conley v. Verrett 1:10 pm

Miami at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Wednesday, April 13, 2016
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets are conjuring up memories from last year's club - not the team that made it to the World Series, but rather the unit that struggled through the first few months due to one of the league's worst offenses. The Mets hope to get their bats untracked as they try to avert a three-game sweep against the visiting Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon.

New York has scored a total of six runs during its four-game losing streak after wasting an overpowering 12-strikeout performance by Noah Syndergaard in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat. The Mets were forced to turn to their bullpen for 7 1/3 innings in the series opener and could be in a predicament with reliever Logan Verrett making a spot start on Wednesday. Marlins center field Dee Gordon struck out a career-high four times Tuesday but still managed to torment New York. Gordon, who batted a robust .427 versus the Mets in 2015, scored the winning run following a single that capped a franchise-record 16-pitch at-bat.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (0-1, 7.94 ERA) vs. Mets RH Logan Verrett (0-0, 9.00)

Conley had his season debut curtailed after one inning due to rain at Washington on Thursday, a brief but erratic outing in which he was touched for three runs, two walks and a wild pitch. A second-round draft pick in 2011 out of Washington State, Conley made 15 appearances (11 starts) as a rookie and compiled a 4-1 record and 3.76 ERA. The 25-year-old Conley turned in his finest start at Citi Field with seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball on Sept. 16.

With right-hander Jacob deGrom scratched because of tightness in his lat, the Mets turned to Verrett to make the spot start, hopeful he can provide an encore from a similar situation last year. Verrett made a spot start at home against the Marlins in mid-September and delivered five solid innings, yielding one run on three hits while striking out three. The most memorable of his four starts in 2015 was eight innings of one-run ball in place of Matt Harvey.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Marlins OF Ichiro Suzuki moved past Barry Bonds, Miami's hitting coach, for 33rd on the all-time list with 2,936 hits.
2. Mets manager Terry Collins said the team will activate RHP Rafael Montero for Wednesday's game and demote a pitcher to the minors.
3. Marlins LHP Mike Dunn had a setback during a bullpen session Sunday and will have his strained left forearm examined by the team doctor.

I'll bet an ice-cold beer this has more to do with Doodoo's loafing last night than a day off vs. a lefty.

Also, WTF. RH-hitting Neil Walker isn;t a cleanup hitter. Career .340 slugging as RHB vs. LHP.

Jeter's catch was a very nice one and came during a tense moment of a very exciting game: 2nd & 3rd, 2-outs, 12th inning of a tie vs the Red Sox that the Yanx would go on to win in bottom 13 (July 1, 2004).
But on a rating of sheer difficulty and/or spectacular-ness I'm not sure it makes the cut for top-20 into the stands plays just among infielders in 21st century baseball alone. Shit, Nolan Arenado may have 3 or 4 better all by himself and he's still like 17 years old. And even top-20 is assuming you consider it an into the stands play in the first place since, as mentioned, he caught it essentially crossing the foul line and was merely unable to stop.

Simply because most members of the sports media only paid attention to baseball games in that era if they involved the Yanx & Sawx doesn't make it the best play or even all that close.

Robles bailed Terry out big time. I thought it was a mistake to bring Henderson in after his big workload last night and an even bigger mistake to leave him in after that first hit.

Wilmer played a really nice first base today, too.

Just finished this on the DVR. Entertaining game with a happy ending. Now, offense, time to show up.

Offense hasn't checked in yet and the Mets are 3-5. From that standpoint, looking pretty solid.

Only if you think on pace to lose 101 games is "pretty solid".

Which is even worse than I just made it sound because the Mets current Pythagorean Expectation at this rate of play is "only" 99 losses over the course of the season. Plus, the Mets have played only two of their eight games against teams that finished over .500 last year. And none of this year's opponents, to date, are expected to finish over .500 this season --- including the defending champion Royals.

Looking for a real silver lining? A real "pretty solid"?

Here it is:

It's probably too early to say this, but Noah looks like he's on the fast track to superduperstardom. Maybe it's a good thing he was left off of the Mets recent Sports Illustrated cover. If you're superstitious about those things.

Re: IGT 4/13 Marlins v Mets Conley v. Verrett 1:10 pm

I approve of this game's result. The process, though? Hrm.

Small Terryball bone to pick: De Aza replacing Cespedes in left, with Lagares being bumped by Yo in center? Aren't defensive replacements supposed to be, like, better defensively than the guys they replace?

Re: IGT 4/13 Marlins v Mets Conley v. Verrett 1:10 pm

But those were line-up moves, not defensive ones. Without them we'd have faced the bottom 8th with Familia batting 4th that inning or needing to be replaced on a day with a short bench and an over-used pen.
As it turned out that spot (De Aza's after the switch) came up with 1 out and 2 on. That ADA lined into an inning-ending DP sucked but it was certainly a prime spot to try and tack on needed runs.
The better argument maybe is that Terry jumped the gun with his double switching an inning earlier which then in turn caused the need for the second swap-a-roo. But those first changes allowed Blevins to span two inning while facing three straight LHBs -- Gordon with bases-loaded to end the 7th then Ichiro & Yelich to start the 8th: resulting in two weak flies plus an infield single -- so I'd make the case for both set of moves.

The moves that have really had the tongues a-wagging and the pens a-writing* from yesterday's game are Terry's "desperate" pitching gambits:
- going right back to injury-plagued big Jim Slade right on the heels of his lengthiest (by pitch count) outing in years
- Blevins for his 3rd day in a row
- Familia for a 5 out save on his 3rd day in a row
and doing so all in a day game after night game during the second week of April while essentially calling the game a 'must-win'.

no, I think a season is a lot of ups and downs and if 'down' is 3-5, I'm pretty confident that the ups will wipe the floor with that.

Exactly. Big difference between "diving into the stands and then making the catch" and "making the catch then diving into the stands".

It's like the issue with Jim Edmonds "diving" catches. The order in which they happen matter.

Jeter was a terrific player, but things like this are what make his "legacy" irritating. His patented "jump and throw" gets glorified, but imagine if he had ever learned the simple skill of planting and throwing.

Amazing how an inability to stop his momentum ends up being a legendary trait.

Don't forget how his being horribly out of position to randomly field a relay throw in the playoffs was 'smart thinking'

True. And understood. THREE STEPS is not nearly enough time to:

1. Stop yourself
2. Cover your face

I love that Rocky-Apollo picture. That's probably the gayest thing ever captured in a major motion picture!

I remember watching the Jeter catch game. It was the utter height of the Boston-MFY rivalry.

As if on cue, Brett Gardner tumbles into the stands catching a foul pop which immediately triggers Michael Kay to bring up the time Jeter made the catch "while flying into the stands".
