IGT 4/17/16 NYM @ CLE: Tribe, Tribe Again

Rubber game: be sure to use protection against losing it.

Matz vs. Kluber. The latter's real good. The former might be too, but wasn't in his last outing.

NY Mets at Cleveland
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, April 17, 2016
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
SportsDirect Inc.

Mike Napoli could prove to be a smart free-agent signing for the Cleveland Indians if the first few weeks of the season are any indication. Napoli has knocked in six runs overall – three the last two days -- and can extend his hitting streak to nine games when the Indians host the New York Mets on Sunday in the rubber match of the three-game series.

The 34-year-old slugger was let go by Boston last season and finished the campaign with Texas before agreeing to a one-year, $7 million deal with Cleveland in January. Napoli is 4-for-9 in the series and had two RBI singles in the Indians’ 7-5 victory Saturday against Matt Harvey and the Mets, who have dropped five of seven. The good news for New York is its offense is beginning to perk up with 11 runs and seven homers the last two games after coming to Cleveland ranked last in the majors in batting average and 29th in scoring. Yoenis Cespedes is 4-for-9 with a pair of blasts and five RBIs while Neil Walker has Kaboomed! twice in the series for the Mets.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (0-1, 37.80 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (0-2, 4.85)

Matz tries to rebound from a rough season debut when he surrendered seven runs on six hits and a pair of walks while getting just five outs against Miami last Monday. The 24-year-old gave up all of the runs in the second inning, including a two-run blast by Giancarlo Stanton. Matz won his lone interleague start of his young career last season against the New York Yankees, permitting one run over six frames.

Kluber pitched six shutout innings last time out before coughing up a 1-0 lead at Tampa Bay and looks to find the form which led to a 2.83 ERA at home a year ago. The 2014 American League Cy Young winner gave up three runs and four hits over 7 2/3 innings last Tuesday and is 9-18 in the last two years combined. Cespedes is 4-for-12 with a homer versus Kluber, who beat the Mets in their only meeting in 2013.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York C Travis d’Arnaud suffered a bruised left elbow after being hit by a pitch Saturday, but X-rays came back negative.
2. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis has recorded multiple hits in four of his last six games to raise his average to .333.
3. Mets 3B David Wright has reached base in all nine games he has played this season, but is expected to get the day off Sunday.

Good things happen when you bunt your way on.

Nice to see them open up against a top starter like Kluber. Confidence boost!

Somehow it's already 6-0 Mets :). 2nd inning.
I'll have to go read up on the play by play.

Conforto! Duda! A bunt! Niiiiice.

A 6-0 win behind Matz and a Sunday lineup against an ace pitcher will cure a lot of ills. It was like the baseball equivalent of putting the lime in the coconut.

No, you need to SEE the 2nd inning plays. Reading just won't do that half-inning justice.
Mets essentially scored 3 runs in the 1st and were gifted 3 more in the 2nd.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Asdrubal Cabrera. He may end up having limits in his abilities, but he seems to have lots of baseball smarts.

I'll check out the first few innings. A much needed excellent outing from Matz. I can relax a little bit.

Even while Harvey was pitching masterfully the other day I knew he was going to hit a wall in the 6th. I just knew it. We have to get past that.
Cespedes is hitting the long ball. Yea, Cabrera is doing a fine job and I know what you mean about "smarts", and I agree. Walker is no Murphy but he is doing a admirable job. I said before that Conforto will be huge for us, or more so we need him to be, and he is not disappointing. If Duda can get long ball hot we could string some together.

We need a little streak, get things going. The Phillies aren't as bad as I thought they'd be (nice walkoff win vs the Nats today). Some good arms surfacing there . But we need to beat them up good this next series.

Lets go Mets!

this. of course, it's ridiculously early to start revising opinions, but Cabrera is definitely better with the glove than i thought he was. He and Walker both have limited range, but are much more likely to turn grounders into outs than last year's keystone combo.

Another quirky stat from this (Sunday's) game: Blevins striking out two straight hitters on just six pitches to start the 9th inning, and then Reed coming in to K the next two on a total of 7 (1 foul ball thrown in).

Re: IGT 4/17/16 NYM @ CLE: Tribe, Tribe Again

Blevins getting two strikeouts in 1/3 of an inning.

I kind of like that a guy can be credited with a strikeout, even without the "out" part of the play completed. The real-words-mean-what-they-mean part of me doesn't like it, but the stats-fetish part of me digs the opportunity to put up more than the apparent maximum possible number of strikeouts.

I wonder if there are similar scoring quirks. If an infielder puts a throw in a first baseman's glove well ahead of the batter-runner, but the first baseman drops it, I don't think the infielder gets the assist (while the team isn't credited with making the out). If a batter hits a ball over the fence, but passes a runner or otherwise makes an out rounding the bases, I don't think he gets a home run (while not being credited with the run or all four bases). But it seems to me that these would be consistent with the spirit of the strikeout-without-an-out rule.

Re: IGT 4/17/16 NYM @ CLE: Tribe, Tribe Again

Yep. And many fans not up on how the game is scored are puzzled that the catcher (under normal circumstances) gets credit for a putout on a strikeout. I once read an anecdote about Thurman Munson - supposedly, he once deliberately dropped three third strikes in a game, so that he could throw to first to get the outs, enabling him to pass Carlton Fisk for the AL lead in catcher's assists. I don't know if I believe it - whatever Munson's faults, he never seemed to be the kind of guy who cared about individual records - but I know I read it.

The first time I learned about the dropped third strike rule was at a game at Shea when I was maybe eight. The trivia question of the day was "Who holds the record for strikeouts in one inning?" The answer was Seaver (and probably others), and my dad explained to me how it was possible for a pitcher to strike out four in an inning.

I think the tale goes that the press notes for the day noted that Carlton Fisk led the league in assists by a catcher. Munson thought this was a pretty arbitrary thing to praise the guy for, so he spent the day undermining the stat, and (I think) gesturing to the press box each time.
