IGT 04/24 - Metropolitans at Braves - Send in deBrooms

NY Mets at Atlanta
When: 1:35 PM ET, Sunday, April 24, 2016
Where: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
SportsDirect Inc.

The opening weeks of the 2016 season have been unsettling for Jaxon's deDad, who looks to find a normal routine starting Sunday when the Mets aim for a series-sweep at Atlanta. Jaxon's deDad was activated from the bereavement list Saturday after missing two weeks following complications with the birth of his newborn son, and the former Rookie of the Year says he is healthy after leaving his only start of the season with right lat tightness.

Mets second baseman Neil Walker and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hit back-to-back homers in Saturday’s 8-2 victory, giving New York 23 homers through eight games of its nine-game road trip. The Braves look to avoid a series sweep and snap a four-game losing streak by sending top prospect Aaron Blair to the mound for his major league beat down and professional humiliation. Infielder Daniel Castro extended his hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-4 performance, raising his average to .300. Atlanta failed to hit a home run for the 12th consecutive game Saturday; the Braves have just three homers on the season – two of those were hit on opening day – and are in their longest homerless streak since a 13-game stretch in May 1983.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jaxon's deDad (1-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Braves RH Aaron Blair (Triple-A: 3-0, 1.42)

Jaxon's deDad beat the Phillies on April 8, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts, but left the game after six innings and told reporters he believes a stiff landing leg aggravated the lat muscle. Jaxon's deDad, who went 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in four postseason starts last fall, spent time throwing in Florida while being with his family and reported no issues. The 27-year-old is 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA in five career starts against the Braves, going 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA in two outings in 2015.

Acquired in the blockbuster deal last offseason that sent Shelby Miller to Arizona for three players – including last year’s top overall draft pick, Dansby Swanson – Blair dominated in three starts for Triple-A Gwinnett, walking five and striking out 22 in 19 innings. He no-hit Durham for seven innings Monday with 10 strikeouts, and held opposing hitters in Triple-A to a .156 average. The 23-year-old is 26-13 in 67 minor-league appearances across four seasons with a 3.13 ERA.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman recorded just his second multi-hit game of the season Saturday, going 2-for-4 to raise his average to .190.
2. New York CF Yoenis Cespedes did not play Saturday after aggravating an existing a bruised right leg on a slide in the seventh inning Friday.
3. Atlanta RF Nick Markakis went 1-for-4 on Saturday with an RBI and a run scored and was hit by a pitch; Markakis has reached base in all 16 games he has played this season.

Not a lot of game followage here, as we are tied in the sixth but have first-and-third with one out.

And Confort bounces one over the wall for a double! Two-one, Mets.

Wilmer needs to get untracked. Somebody help the Wil.

Bueller? Bueller?

Conforto's double in the 6th breaks the 1-1 tie, sets up 2nd & 3rd w/1 out, and ends the Blair pitch project for the Braves.

Braves go to the pen against Duda, but don't go to any of their three lefties. Nor do they walk him. I'm guessing this is a pitch-around.

5 2/3 innings and 82 pitches for deDaddio. Short leash, Terry, but I see what you're doing.

Coming to the plate with a swiss-cheese bat is almost always a bad idea, Eric.

Holy shit, Gary is schooling Keith about Exene Cervenka, John Doe, and X. Trying to turn Keith on to "Fourth of July."

That was one of those, 'it's the 9th inning and we've got nothing to lose by challenging the call even though there's zero chance of it being overturned' strategy.
And so another two minutes was wasted.

A Brian Dozier 3R HR off of Strasburg in the 8th breaks the tie and gives the Twins a 4-1 lead in DC
Be a nice day to pick up a game in the standings. (but aren't they all?)

I was a little worried there for a while that Cabrera's decision not to go for the double play in the ninth might cost the Mets the game.

We weren't going to turn two on that play but going for the force seemed like it carried a minimum of risk and that would have at least kept the DP in play for the next one.
For all of Familia's problems in that inning, he did get three broken-bat grounders to SS which could have resulted in more than just the two outs we were able to get.

Great road trip!

Gary did some riffing on the L.A. band X after the Braves brought in Hunter Cervenka. He recommended Under the Big Black Sun to Keith. I'm not sure it is up Keith's alley.

F'n Ollie Perez gets the Nats to the 16th vs. the Twinkies with a bunt that causes a two-base-error allowing a runner to score from 2nd.

So the Nats got 2 in the 8th and then, still down a run, Dusty sent Harper, who had been getting the day off, up to PH leading off the 9th ... and he HR'd to tie the game.
Twins scored a run in top-15, then got the first two Nats out in the bottom half ... and then maybe out-smarted themselves (though I'd have probably done the same thing):
- with no one else left on his bench, Dusty was forced to stick with his pitcher to bat, a guy who happened to be Ollie Perez who has ZERO plate appearances since he was a Met in 2010
- but Ollie is still only on deck at this point so the Twins opt to walk Danny Espinosa, thus putting the tying run on, in order to pitch to Ollie
- they oddly decided on a pitching change first (don't know what the reasoning behind THAT was)
- Espinosa stole 2nd and then Ollie, on a 1-1 count, laid down a bunt which the catcher promptly hurled into RF ... Tie Game!
- after a HBP put runners on 1st & 2nd, MdD, who HR'd earlier leading off the 1st inning, flied out and so we're on to the 16th

Where's the old man!

Saw bits and pieces. I saw Conforto's GRdouble and Duda's sac. Didn't get to see much of deGrom & the rest of the pitching. I'll have to replay a few innings. Good game, good weekend.

And Chris Heisey (yes, THAT Chris Heisey) homers in the bottom of the 16th to make a winner out of Ollie F'n Perez.
