IGT 04/26 - Reds @ Mets

d'Kong76
Apr 26 2016 09:34 AM

Cincinnati at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Tuesday, April 26, 2016
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

Michael Conforto has grown accustomed to batting third in the lineup, and the New York Mets have benefited as a result. Conforto looks to continue his stellar run at the plate as the Mets vie for their 10th consecutive win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday when the clubs play the middle contest of their three-game beat down.

The 23-year-old homered in New York's 5-3 victory in the series opener on Monday to improve to 14-for-37 with three blasts and eight RBIs in his last 10 games. Conforto also scored on two-run homers by both Lucas Duda and Neil Walker as New York recorded its fourth win in a row and ninth in 11 outings while handing Cincinnati its sixth setback in seven road contests. Adding injury to the Reds' insult was the loss of Brandon Phillips, who was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Noah Syndergaard and exited in the fifth inning. X-rays were negative for the three-time All-Star second baseman, although his availability is unknown heading into Tuesday's contest.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Brandon Finnegan (1-1, 3.74 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (1-1, 2.89)

Finnegan suffered his first loss on Thursday after he allowed five runs on seven hits in four innings against the Chicago Cubs in a game that is best remembered for counterpart Jake Arrieta's no-hitter. The 23-year-old was taken deep on two occasions last time out, matching the total of his previous three outings. Finnegan, who has yet to face the Mets in his young career, limited his walks as he permitted just a pair against the Cubs after issuing nine free passes in his previous two outings.

Colon will make his second attempt to record win No. 220, which would move him past Pedro Martinez for second-most among Dominican-born pitchers. The 42-year-old Colon was denied in his initial bid on Wednesday after allowing three runs on four hits in six innings en route to a no-decision against Philadelphia. Colon has enjoyed success versus the Reds in his career, posting a 4-1 mark - although his 3.77 ERA and .273 batting average against provide cause for concern.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Cincinnati SS Zack Cozart, who has hit safely in 13 of 14 contests, had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly on Monday and has three RBIs and four runs scored in his last three games.
2. New York OF Yoenis Cespedes had fluid drained from his right knee on Monday, but is listed as "day-to-day" by the team.
3. Reds OF Jay Bruce was placed on paternity list Monday and later welcomed son Carter, who was born at 9:08 p.m.

Re: IGT 04/26 - Reds @ Mets

Finnegan is the guy who, in 2014, went virtually straight from the college World Series (w/TCU) to the ML World Series.
In between he was KC's #1 draft pick (17th overall), then had just 27 innings of minor league ball and 7 innings of ML pitching before becoming the Royals' go-to lefty in the post-season.

His ride through 2015 wasn't nearly so smooth as he bounced around five different teams on three different levels (AA, AAA, ML) for two different orgs marked notably by the late July trade to Cincy as part of the deal sending Cueto to KC.

Scoreless in the second. Grandy got picked in the first on a move that was likely a balk.

This would seem to be the type of team that could eat up Colón, but the ump has a wide zone and Bartolo knows how to exploit that.

I understand the reasoning, kind of in emergency mode until d' & Cess get back. Conforto looks like he'll just take this is stride.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with him. I'd move Lags to lead off and drop Grandy to 4th.

Phillies are trying REALLY hard to lose that game but are managing to win (so far) regardless. 9 hits + 4 walks (mostly thx to Scherzer) but several dumb base-running plays and other acts of dumbth have them hanging on by their tingerfips (4-3 in the 8th).

THouGhTs On tHe GaME!!!11

1. I'll tellya one thing: It wasn't en fuego up in the Promenade. Cold and wet. Also, cold and wet.

2. Saw Gfafif on the concourse (even though saw me first) and also ran into a guy I used to know in elementary school.

3. Fuku Chicken sandwich was fukuing good! Only 1 beer as my hands were too cold to even hold one after dark.

4. I guess I was shocked and not shocked with the Cespedes HR. For one thing the on-deck circle -- and scoreboard (is that legal?) showed Doodoo as the PH. Couldn't tell whether the ball cleared the line at first so there was a moment where nobody knew. The scoreboard "home run" graphics began, that's how everyone found out.

5. The Reds are in that baseball hell where they don't trust anyone in the bullpen and so rode that great lefty's outing 1 pitch too long.

6. Wright, who everyone in the building was convinced would strike out, then proved no matter who they went to Cincy was fucked.

7. Worst fear was Hamilton leading off the 9th. Was convinced if he got on it would be another 2 hours out there.

8. Wilmer made 2 nice plays at 1st and didn't finish either. Alsdo treated to nice D by Walker and Hamilton, though his leap almost seemed gratuitous.

9. Plawecki swung the bat well. I think it was his drive Hammy caught.

10. Passed the time with my brother doing commentary as Bernie Sanders. check out the series at https://www.instagram.com/jon.springer/

Duda was assumed to be the PH because he was in the on-deck circle but, as he never approached the plate or was announced as such, Terry was able to pull the old switcheroo.
It wasn't apparent to the booth guys either whether or not Duda had been announced, but the fact that he later came in on defense was the final answer.

Re: IGT 04/26 - Reds @ Mets

It also wasn't apparent to them whether Terry made a last minute re-consideration or just sent Doo-wocka-Doo up there as a decoy. I lean toward the latter. He outfoxed the less experienced manager. Once Price went to the mound, and left his lefty in there (presumably with the thought that Lucas was the next batter), Terry was able to swoop Doo out of there before he was announced. At that point the Reds were unable to make a change. Foxy Terry.

He did alright. His best play was in the third, coming in on the safety squeeze and somehow freezing Billy Hamilton at third. How can the Reds have their signals so crossed that a guy bunts with Billy Hamilton on third, gets it down, and he doesn't break in time? The guy just want from first to third on a single to left. If I remember correctly, he did standing!

Hamilton may be a comet, but the Reds looked pretty lost on the bases most of the night.

This was the most thrilling game for me so far in this early season. It genuinely felt like some of the magical games from late 2015.

While the Mets are the hottest team in baseball right now, I'm still hoping this win will propel them to further greatness. It was great to see the dugout reacting the way they did after the Cespedes HR.
