The Mets apologize for leting it slip away and it is now in the hands of Goldin Auctions with a current bid of $144,000.

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

This is such a no-brainer. Someone in the organization fucked up ( I don't want to know if the Wilpons knew about it and did nothing to stop it). Sometimes you have to pay the price for such errors. This is one of those times.

Piazza's dad was going to try and get in on the auction but now he thinks it'll end up a bidding war and he pulled out. Mike Piazza could afford it, no? And then donate it?

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

Donate it to whom, though?

The Mets museum in Citi Field?
Cooperstown?
Or the 9/11 museum in Manhattan?

I'd pick the 9/11 museum. It will stand out more there. In Cooperstown it would be just one of may shirts, caps, jerseys, gloves, and pairs of shoes.

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

So they sold it to raise money?

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

I saw some speculation that it may have been one of the things pilfered by Charlie Samuels. I don't know how likely or true that is, but I'd think that if it was stolen property whoever it is who's selling it wouldn't have the right to do so.

Is Samuels in jail?

OE: Nope.

5 years probation started in 2012

I say rotate the jersey between all of 'em.

If it has to be only one....that's tough.

9/11 Museum or Cooperstown.

This story surfaced about two or three days after Piazza's statement. I would not be surprised if that was bullshit damage control from the Mets themselves. And if that's the case, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

we're tying too much to that one home run. There were nearly 100 jerseys on the field that day. That this one object of memorabilia of the hundreds or thousands of items that exist in the Mets possession over the last 15 years found it's way elsewhere is in no way surprising or embarrassing.

OOOooo, I beg to differ.

How on earth did I miss this story?

Re: Where's that Piazza 9/11 Jersey

Mike Piazza and his dad simply wanted it saved as an artifact in an appropriate venue.

In my link opening the thread the Piazza's blame Jeff Wilpon for screwing up the chain of custody on the jersey.

What's nuttier, that, or the supposed $27,000/seat for courtside at Kobe's final game tonight?
Especially since Kobe and the Lakers, y'know, both kind of suck right now.

Supposedly this is a done deal but the auction continues. So who knows.

You thought LOLMets would be a thing of the past just because the team won the pennant? Still the same owners ....

On second read, I'm not so sure I know where you're coming from. Do you generally think that the Wilpons deserve to get LOLMetsed when they do, or that's it's unwarranted bad press?

I'm saying I in no way thought LOLMets would be a thing of the past.

I'm not sure about generally. Sometimes they deserve stark criticism, sometimes modest criticism, sometimes no criticism. Sometimes they deserve criticism, but the criticism they get is wrongheaded. That's fair, isn't it?

I can't say for certain with regard to this situation.

There are times where I wonder if you'd defend M. Donald Grant, or even Walter O'Malley!

Well, it was meant as a joking comment about how Edgy can be an orange and blue colored glasses wearing pom-pom waver on issues. Especially when it comes to easy and hated targets.

Nothing wrong with my glasses, though.

This whole issue is ridiculous.

Big effin' deal. They sold jerseys! So what? Who cares?

It's the media making something out of nothing as usual in order to sell papers.

I could not care less.

exactly.

I'd say on the LolMets thing that it's completely disconnected from the Wilpons. It doens't matter if they do or don't (still) deserve criticism or not, these trash papers are going to spin up silly headlines and/or articles anyway. So, at least to me, defending the team against the stupid media-driven narratives shouldn't be seen as a defense of ownership, or even the team, it's more an attack of a different industry.
