Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

This possibly warrants its' own thread. Wow. Just, wow.

Music Icon Prince Dead At 57

He was one of few on my list to see live before he hung it up. Time for me to make firmer plans to see Petty and Springsteen.

Late bloomer on Prince. He wowed me in that short Super Bowl appearance
and I downloaded some stuff. 2016 has been a grim year for entertainers and
it's only freakin' April still.

Depending on one's musical proclivities, you could not tune your radio to a contemporary hits station for four, maybe five, maybe more years and not hear within the next hour a Prince record or a record Prince wrote and/or produced never mind directly influenced. In baseball terms, Prince c. 1983-1987 was peak Albert Pujols.

I was a kid when Martin Luther King was killed. It was a name I had heard on the news at the time but not to the point where I was paying attention or knew who specifically he was.
So when they interrupted whatever TV show I was watching at the time (it may have been 'I Dream of Jeanie') to announce that he had been killed, I went into the other room to ask my father which country he was king of.

I just got that flashback here imagining some older folk wondering why the news is making such a fuss because some country's prince just died.

I'll continue to work on this this evening while I listen to his music.

Having seen him resurface recently I was looking forward to some new grooves. Maybe we will get some new music, he's been recording, but it'll be bittersweet without him here to perform it.

He constantly recorded and buried most of it in the back yard. I imagine we'll be getting new music for 30 years. There'll be folks convinced he never died.

It'll be like Tupac, only on steroids.

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

I feel kinda bad cause I took Prince for granted.

He came on the scene & he was awesome. He made Michael Jackson look like a child. He made Jimi Hendrix look like Jiminy Cricket. He started a party in 1982 that went on until 1999 turned to 2000 (& beyond- I can still party like that from time to time). He simply continued to be awesome his whole life, charting his own path thru the recording jungle, shunning the status quo, reinventing himself just like Bowie did, a number of times. More so resurrecting himself. Last album I bought by him had Rasberry Beret on it, so that was a loooong time ago.

I still sat up and paid attention anytime he appeared or did something.
I'm surprised this is affecting me as deeply as it is. Maybe it's because we were born in the same year.
Even MJs departure wasn't as shocking. Nor Bowie.

RIP Prince Rogers Nelson.

I liked 3 of his songs - Little Red Corvette, 1999, and Raspberry Parade.
Didn't get how a 5'2" guy wearing lipstick and eye makeup was considered sexy by the girls. But each to his/ her own taste.
I remember when I my daughter would scream at me when I said Michael Jackson was a better dancer.
But he was a true artist with a huge legacy in the music world.
RIP.

Michael Jackson had been troubled and ill for some time. Some of the shock was lessened by the fact that you could kinda see that one coming.

Didn't know anything about Prince's health before the announcement yesterday.

Don't do drugs kids.

2016 needs to calm the fuck down. Wasn't even done mourning Pearl when I heard this news. My '80's are dying fast. Someone wrap Doc and Darryl in bubble tape.

Had a chance to go see him the second-to-last time he came through the area, but passed due to cost/work commitments. Died inside over that many times since... and more so today.

Yeah, there's Pet Sounds and Revolver and Exile and a few others on the shortlist for best Rock/Pop Album of All-TimeTM. But Sign O The Times and Purple Rain are both immaculate, and top contenders for that one.

Also had a chance to see him at Penn State. Missed out on tickets. As it turned out my daughter was admitted to the hospital on the day he performed there. Her hospital window looked right on onto Bryce Jordan Center! Talk about in our face!

I am so glad to see others here praising Purple Rain because I know that there are some here that dismiss megahits out of hand (hotel California comes to mind) and I think purple rain is just outstanding

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

I know I missed out on some deeper appreciation in my lifetime, but Prince being such an outstanding singles artist it was almost enough for me. One afternoon walking home from high school with my friend (82 or 83?) a guy pulled up in a car with "Little Red Corvette" blasting and we both had the same striking realization: WBAB* didn't play this shit why?

* - Lawn Guyland Klassik Rawk befaw it was klassik, aka 'White Guy Rock'

Again I was never a deep devotee but it was impossible to escape the guy accompanying almost everything we did in college. Every dorm room had 2 copies of Purple Rain, every party DJ hit a home run when they spun the guy.

After kollege I associated Prince with this girl I used to know. With the intellect. And the savior-faire.

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

That's pretty much a nailer right there. White guys in college in eighties had everything to fear from his weird, pan-racial, pan-sexual, cheesy-facial-hair, pimping thing. But then he'd come on at party, neutral territory where none of you would have to answer for his presence, and you'd be all, "Holy shit."

Billuh Gib-BONZ has a nice tribute to Prince-as-pure-guitarist today in the Washington Post, complete with an embedded video of Prince performing "Honky Tonk Woman," in what looks like a sound check turned into a nice vid. The style is as informed by Gibbons as much as the Stones, but then again it's all Prince.

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

From its debut at No. 52, “Kiss,” technically by Prince and the Revolution, climbed the charts steadily. It was inside the Top 40 with a bullet the week ending March 8, which was the very same day the Mets commenced their exhibition slate at Al Lang Stadium versus their co-tenants, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets were anxious to kiss off the Cardinals altogether following the resolution of the 1985 season, a pulsating campaign during which the Mets won 98 games yet it wasn’t quite enough for a divisional crown.

In 1986, the Mets wanted to be unstoppable. Unstoppable like Prince. Unstoppable like “Kiss,” which continued to soar on Billboard while Davey Johnson sorted out his personnel: 28 to 15 to 10 to 5 to 3 on the eve of their season opener in Pittsburgh. Prince was equally indefatigable within the space of what was now his ninth Top 10 smash.

Spring 1986, that intersection where Prince meets the Mets, or at least converged in my priorities.

Wow, that's great. Thank you for sharing or might not have heard.

Raspberry Beret was the song that pulled me in more than Purple Rain, because the song (and video) was very Beatlesque in a number of ways, at least in my musical mind back then. It leaned in that direction and I remember thinking this guy's musical well is deep, wide, and rich.

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

I agree with that.

I think that was him at his best, but his ambition pushed him beyond writing wonderful, economical pop songs. He wanted ever song to be a "Hey Jude" or a "A Day in the Life" without wasn't satisfied enough with writing "Good Day Sunshine" (though he wrote a dozen comparable songs to "GDS"). So that and the (mostly justified) battles with the labels, and the mysterious aloofness put him beyond the reach of most but the connissuers through much of the nineties, but by the aughts, and especially after re-claiming his name, he started embracing and celebrating all facets of himself, including the lighter side.

Re: Interwebs Blowing Up with News of Prince Passing

My first recollection of seeing him was a dress rehearsal for one of his early tours. I was next to another musician, a couple other guys that were up-and-comers and that thought they were hot shit, and we were watching Prince. The guy turned to me and said, "I'm fucking embarrassed to be alive." And that's how I felt. He was so good. It was like, "What are we doing? This guy is, like, on a different planet than we are." It was showmanship, it was rock & roll, it was fun, it was great. I think it helped everyone around. It made us all think that Minneapolis wasn't the dour town that we tried to pretend it was. He was like a ray of light in a very cautious place. He was a star. He made no bones about it. He was glitz to a place that wasn't used to it. I remember a little scuffle broke out in front of the stage one night and Prince said, "Stop fighting, you'll mess up your clothes."

If he had only gone to rehab as a 28 inpatient guy he might be here. The out patient route seems geared for those less committed to get well.

Lisa's nephew did out-patient for a year. She graduated and passed away four days later.

You can kid yourself that being addicted to prescription meds doesn't make you an addict-addict. That you can still function, especially if you're rich.

But yeah, the string tends to run out on that narrative.

well I guess if you are in a lot of pain it's easy to tell yourself you are taking them because you need them, not because you are addicted.
