Took a dozen 10-year-olds to the theater for Lunchpail's bday party to see this yesterday. I am not one of you comic geeks and think most of those movies are ultimately boring but I did like this one more than most. Spiderman and Ant Man were very funny, and I liked the parts where they were just interacting with one another. (Winter Soldier in the back seat of the VW, etc). I barely understood the "villian" or his motivations in this one in the least, beyond a convoluted plot to pit the Avengers against one another and at least bring up an examination of "real world" analysis of US intervention. Talking it over with the kids at the pizza place afterward I asked them what the movie was about. One kid just said "fighting!" Yes, that part was good. Airport fight, chase scene, Rogers vs. the helicopter etc. I'm probably the millionth guy to ask this but how the hell does that regular-dad archer guy belong with supernatural invincibles like Vision? Wouldn't he just like die in 5 seconds? Only knowing a little of the whole "universe" I'd have thought that Downey's snarky Iron Man would be the last guy to line up behind the suits, and that Captain America instead would serve that role but whatever. He's all like emo and "I was never even a good soldier." Really? And couldn't they have just talked it over? Better than the previous "Winter Soldier" that's for sure. 25 or 30 minutes too long, though. Fun times?

There's a lot more to the Civil War conflict in the comics... at least in terms of the development of the rift. (Also, the secret identities-becoming-public-knowledge thing, which isn't even feinted to here, was a BIG deal... like, when Peter Parker gives himself up publicly, it's got weight, you know?) The nifty action sequences/Spidey*-and-Ant-Man stuff aside, I didn't love this one. I mean, it was okay... but just felt like it was a real less-than-the-sum-of-its-parts jobber. (I actually liked the Day of the Condorness of "Winter Soldier" better. So there.) *I think they've finally-- FINALLY-- gotten Spidey 100 percent right.

Yeah, the outing doesn't have the weight, largely because secret identities aren't really a big deal in the MCU. Spidey really has a low-cool-quotient, comic-colored set of pajamas — even after he works with Tony Stark on an upgrade — doesn't he?

I'm not a comic guy either, but MW is ten, so he figured it was time to start watching some Marvel movies. We dug it. Airport scene was totally worth the price of admission, but the story was meh.
