IGT 05/06 - Mets @ Padres

NY Mets at San Diego
When: 10:40 PM ET, Friday, May 6, 2016
Where: Petco Park, San Diego, California
SportsDirect Inc.

The San Diego Padres cooled off New York in the opener of a four-game set and look to post another victory over the visiting Mets in Friday's encounter. New York had won 13 of 16 games before being mesmerized by San Diego right-hander Colin Rea, who didn't allow a hit until two outs in the seventh inning and took a shutout into the ninth before needing bullpen help to finish off a 5-3 victory.

Rea gave up three hits and departed after right fielder Curtis Granderson slugged a leadoff homer in the ninth, and New York made things interesting when red-hot center fielder Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run blast off reliever Brad Hand. San Diego reclamation project Fernando Rodney retired the final two hitters for his seventh consecutive save and the 39-year old, who lost his closer's job with the Seattle Mariners last season, has yet to allow an earned run in 11 appearances this season. The Padres have won five of their last seven games as they continue to attempt to recover from a poor start. The Mets (17-10) have the fourth-best record in the majors but trail the Washington Nationals by 1 1/2-games in the National League East.

TV: 10:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (2-1, 2.51 ERA) vs. Padres LH Drew Pomeranz (2-3, 2.48)

Syndergaard lost his last outing when he allowed four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 against the San Francisco Giants. He has given up seven runs in his last two starts after allowing just two total runs in his first three turns. Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in two career starts against the Padres and has struck out 19 in 12 innings.

Pomeranz lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers despite a stellar outing in which he gave up one run and three hits in seven innings. The Padres were blanked 1-0 by Clayton Kershaw, marking the second time in five starts that Pomeranz was on the wrong end of a shutout defeat. Pomeranz lasted just four innings in his one career start against the Mets, giving up two runs (one earned) and five hits on April 27, 2012, as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Cespedes has eight homers and 24 RBIs over his last 15 games.
2. San Diego C Derek Norris went 3-for-3 with a homer in the opener after being 3-for-38 over his previous 11 games.
3. New York 2B Neil Walker was hitless in four at-bats Thursday and is 0-for-13 over the past four games.

Looks like lots of rain today (all through the day) in San Diego. I'm hoping that if they decide to call this one and do two tomorrow they decide earlier than 10:40 ET.

It would be a bummer to stay up late and then not have a game to watch.

Yesterday Gary said something about TC saying that Duda was hitting to left with authority. He has hit to left, but not with authority imo. He won't "go" to left. He'll go to right and swing late. He's not changing his swing or weight shift, or lead foot. Just swinging late, sometimes chopping, sometimes blooping to left. If that's the only way he can do it, so be it, I'll take it. Cause it does work from time to time. But I wish he had a swing just for going to left. Don't swing late as much as shift your weight later, let the swing & your hips follow that. Square some up that way.

That's why shifts work. That's also why there's so much luck in baseball. Because the action revolves around the batted ball, and the batters, by and large and to a great extent, can't control where the batted ball goes. It's tough enough just to hit the ball. And to the extent that some batters have some control over where the ball goes, it's not nearly the kind of control or precision that, for example, a basketball player needs to sink a free throw or a quarterback needs to complete a pass 30 yards downfield.

Otherwise, there wouldn't be shifts. Ever.

I'd just lay down a bunt against the shift until they stop.

True, and good point. But the best hitters can adjust to a pitch. Now playing in an actual game, all bets are off because of the human factor, the pitcher's stuff. But in batting practice a good hitter will practice spraying them all around and try to apply that to the game. We don't see that much today. Not at all from the sluggers. Sluggers have one swing and that's all they think they need. To me that makes for a one dimensional hitter. We see too many hitters doing that these days. Meh, it's part of today's game.

Oh, me 3. If no one is on the left side tight, yea, I think I would bunt until they stop. Why doesn't one of these players today just do that?!

No, they just consider 250 lb slow-footed sluggers to generally be really bad bunters.

Too many famines in too little time. Not good.

TC said right at the get-go that this team will live and die by the longball. And I thought: don't be saying that TC, you have some power guys and some contact guys. But then everyone started hitting homeruns and I shut up.

Whoa, that woke me up. And that was small ball.

1) (another) bad send by Timmy. I was saying 'No' the entire way.

2) Ump made the out call too early

3) I hate that calls like that can be overturned - but that one should have been and we've certainly seen much less decisive calls flipped

We don't know if that was the reason for the non-reversal or not - but it's just another flaw in the whole system. He didn't touch the plate afterward because he was called out and it's simply not logical to play the game as if each call made needs to be ignored like it never happened.

Not when the shortstop has the ball just as Cabrera is only a stride past 3B.
I probably wouldn't have sent him with two outs and definitely not with only one.
