IGT 05/11 - Mets at Dodgers

NY Mets at LA Dodgers When: 10:10 PM ET, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California SportsDirect Inc. Noah Syndergaard attempts to halt a three-start winless streak when the New York Mets visit the Los Angeles Dodgers in Wednesday's finale of a three-game set (there's a game tomorrow night too but things aren't always dead-on in the fact's department). Syndergaard has allowed nine earned runs over his past three starts after giving up just two over his first three outings. Syndergaard lost a start at Dodger Stadium during last season's National League Division Series despite striking out nine in 6 1/3 innings. The teams have split the first two games of the series with Los Angeles recording a 3-2 victory Tuesday when pinch hitter Trayce Thompson hit a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Thompson, the brother of Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Klay Thompson, has two homers in the series and three in his past five games. New York leads the majors with 49 homers but managed just five singles in Tuesday's loss after slugging two long balls in Monday's 4-2 victory. TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles) PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (2-2, 2.58 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (3-1, 1.66) Syndergaard has struck out 49 and walked just eight in 38 1/3 innings while dominating most hitters. He received a no-decision against the Dodgers in the regular season last year when he gave up one run and two hits in six innings. Syndergaard has fared well on the road this season, going 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA and striking out 22 in 19 innings. Maeda received a no-decision in his last turn when he gave up two runs and two hits in six innings against Toronto. He is just 1-1 in three starts at Dodger Stadium despite having a 2.29 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Maeda has pitched at least six innings in all six of his starts but he has gone seven innings just once. WALK-OFFS: 1. Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez is mired in a 16-game homerless drought and all his hits are singles during the stretch. 2. New York 2B Neil Walker (shin) sat out the first two games of the series and is hitless in 20 at-bats over his past seven contests. 3. Los Angeles LF Carl Crawford was hitless in four at-bats Tuesday and is 4-for-28 over his last nine games.

The signing of this Kente Maeda guy, the only right-hander we'll see in LA, definitely flew under the radar this past winter. The just-turned 28 y/o had some pretty good stats in 8 seasons as a Hiroshima Carp [97-67; 2.39; 1.05] including no ERA over 2.6 during his last 6 years there, but signed very club-friendly deal with LA for $25 mil spread out over 8 seasons. Not sure why his JPL track record didn't translate into more interest/competition/money in the U.S. Did he pre-decide to only talk to the Dodgers? In six first starts on this side of the Pacific he's given up 0, 0, 1, 0, 4, and 2 runs. 1.66 ERA, 35 K vs 10 BB; just 26 hits in 35 IP [0.95 WHiP] The only flaw seems to be that his pitch count can get a bit high which means he usually exits after 6 innings. Sounds like a bit of a nibbler. Oh good, another three-plus hour game!

Shocking O-o-T-S news: Cubs (now 22-7) & ChiSox (23-12) both lose this afternoon. at Wrigley: Cubs 4 - SD 7 (4 runs in the 7th for Padres) at Texas: White Sox 5 - Rangers 6 (Mat Latos turning back into a pumpkin for Sox) It's just the 3rd time this season that the two have posted losses on the same day and the first since 4/17

Cabrera at SS is like a mental security blanket out there. Much less agita on sharply hit balls to that position or on grounders to either side of him. He ain't spectacular, but he's been a big plus so far and some of us may have to eat some of our pre-season gripes.

I sure many of you watching on TV saw that Tommy Lasorda has been in the stands for this series. And while it's good to see Tommy is still loyal to his Dodgers, one reporter made the mistake of asking him his opinion of Syndergaard's performance. Now maybe ol' Tommy is getting a bit senile as he seems unsure of the NYM pitcher's nickname, referring to him at one point as the 'King Man' rather than 'Thor', and also is so spitting mad that he's confused to the actual number of HRs hit, but it's clear that TL is still a passionate Dodger fan.
