Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

I know it's also Kentucky Derby Day today, but Bart's HR trot, now THAT'S the most exciting two minutes in sports!

The 31-second trip around the bases was one to be savored.

Re: Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

It does deserve a thread. And a card, I imagine.

I missed the point of contact live (doing graphics while watching) but Gary's voice instantly caught my attention and I looked at the TV. I wasn't even sure it was Colon until they showed him rounding 2nd. But I did see that ball land and it was WAY OUTTA THERE!

Compile pics of HR here for his card if you find any, pretty please.

Re: Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

Fewer HRs than Bart this year:
- Chase Headley (73 ABs, $13 million)
- Darin Ruf (56 ABs)
- Justin Turner (92)
- Juan Lagares (40)
- Howie Kendrick (69)
- Jason Heyward (95)
- Dee Gordon (even with all that help)
- Francisco Cervelli (90)
- both Rickie & Jemile Weeks (72 ABs combined)
- most of the Braves roster (including Markakis, Francoeur, etc.)

The photo might be by Gregory Bull/ AP. I can't confirm this yet. Such a great shot.

I guess they do focus on Colon hoping for a funny picture.

In fairness to Justin Turner, he also HR'd today so he's actually tied with Bartolo at 1.
Needless to say there's a bunch of others who have one for the season also including the likes of Ryan Zimmerman.

Re: Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

I need a song to go with my cards. It's to be called The Legend Of Bartolo Colon. Don't make me do it all!(ha-making the cards is so easy).

I'll need lyrics, Fman or I will write the music.
Or Edgy, you play. This might be right up your alley.
Fmans always putting out excellent stuff via fb and IIRC you posted a song once that also was excellent.

Not sure if it should be folksy or what, but it should be legendary.

Re: Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

So I started the game on about a 20 minute delay while doing the gradual catch-up thing so was still about 10 minutes in arrears at the HR.
Two things came to mind.

1) When George Foreman was making his comeback (which started in his late '30s), one that was treated as a novelty at first and still as a long-shot even as he (re)climbed the ladder towards a title shot.
When he finally got into a title match and pulled out a stunning knockout, the call (must have been from Jim Lampley) was simply "It Happened"
That was the phrase that jumped into my mind.

2) Bartolo was mom's last favorite player; she usually picked one. In recent years it went from Ike, then to R.A., and then, after those two were exiled, she picked out Colon. Like a lot of folks, I think she just got a kick out of the goofy nonchalantness he projects.
Anyway, being a west coast game she might not have been awake for this one live, but she would have gotten a kick out of it.

Caught by a Mets fan. The News has it. http://m.nydailynews.com/sports/basebal ... -1.2628914

And so does the Post: http://nypost.com/2016/05/08/meet-the-f ... baseballs/

The Post has the high calorie quote:

“Bartolo is a true athlete,” Jimmy Zurn, 35, told The Post on Saturday night at Petco Park during the Mets’ 6-3 win over the Padres. “Anyone who can crush a plate of nachos and crush a baseball like that has to be an athlete.”

He just got to Tim Teuffel the third base coach. He is approaching home plate. He touches home plate with his first major league home run. Aaand they are going to give him the silent treatment in the dugout. They have vacated. The Mets have left the building. Bartolo Colon is the loneliest man in San Diego as he reaches the Mets dugout after hitting a home run and there's no one there to great him. And now here they come up the dugout steps. Wow.

I should have one but I can't commit until I run it by my nephew. He was conditioned to be a Mets fan at birth.
I really can't afford $10 for a single card either, and I fear if people pay that they will continue to do it and this will put the hobby even further out of reach. I pick up base card in blisters and I don't throw my money at pumped up things like this, that has been my personal protest.
But this is a Met, it's that wacky Colon HR which is Mets and MLB history, and they say it will be a limited print (do I believe them? meh,50/50).
So I will jump in here and grab this, but then I'm jumping back out again. $4.99 each and 2.99 for 5 would be more inline with what I feel is fair.

I like the old school guy who didn't play games with the ball. The HoF asked Bart for his HRgame gear and he said no to the bat and ball going.

My edition of the News Sunday put Bartolo on the back page without a final game story. It was big enough to bump the Kentucky Derby in the Racing Final. Newsday also had a Bart HR story without a final. Kind of reminded me of the Post, in its afternoon paper pre-Murdoch days, printing partial in-progress line scores.

There are few things in the world less important than a mans word. In this case, a statement was made at the beginning of the season, and it came true.

Matt Sassi said to his buddy, Anthony Triola: "If Bartolo Colon hits a home run this year, I'll get a commemorative tattoo". Before the game on Saturday I met them in McFadden's and they told me about this bet. You'd think, ok... that's not happening. Right? WRONG!

Coolest part of the bet was that they were both there to witness the feat in person. Matt is a Middletown, NY native that moved to San Diego. What were the odds that Bart would be on the hill the day of our invasion? What are the odds he'd go yard? Slim to damn near impossible.

Matt could have chickened out and not gotten it at all, or gotten something small that could easily have been hidden. Instead he went balls to the freakin' wall with pretty much a half sleeve. Tossed THE 7 LINE ARMY on there for good measure and added the date of Bart's now famous swing.

You manned up, Matt. Bravo.

Mets' Bartolo Colon gets immortalized in special bobblehead with bobble stomach

In honor of Bartolo Colon's first career [HR], Clark Toys released a special bobblehead commemorating the 42-year-old Mets right-hander's unlikely feat. But this bobblehead has a unique twist: It also features a bobble stomach....

The company is now accepting preorders for the Bartolo bobblehead, which is expected to start shipping in the fall.
