Re: Bartolo's HR deserves its own thread

This quiz is way too hard. I'm just guessing at all.

I hope so. But thanks for playing

1) How many Mets pitchers have homered? 80

Fewer.
2) How many homers have Mets pitchers hit? 200

Fewer!
3) Who hit the first? Jackson

Jackson hit the second.
4) Who are they only two Mets pitchers to hit a grand slam? Walt Terrell and Doc Gooden

Neither.
5) Who hit two in one game? Terrell

Terrell[/bigpurple] it is. Going the other way at Wrigley Field.
6) Which two Mets pitchers homered in consecutive starts? Gooden and Seaver

Seaver[/bigpurple] is correct, going deep 6/13/72 against Atlanta's Ron Schueler at the Launching Pad, and then again 6/18/72 against Cincinnati's Ross Grimsley at the 'Front. Gooden never pulled it off, and so part 2 of this question remains.
7) Which five Hall-of-Famers gave up homers to Mets pitchers? Koufax, Carlton, Maddux, Gibson, Jenkins

Jenkins[/bigpurple] is correct, giving up both(!) of Terrell's shots 8/6/83, almost exactly a calendar year after getting taken by deep by the lousy-hitting Craig Swan 8/4/82. Swan cursed himself with this hit, and would never be a good pitcher again.

Also correct is Steve Carlton[/bigpurple] who got victimized during his "Why is he still out there?" days by Professor Timothy Leary 4/20/84.
8) Which six former or future Mets pitchers have given up homers to Mets pitchers? Lieter, Gooden, Pelfrey, Heilman, Fucking who knows

No soup. Gooden rarely faced the Mets after leaving. Pelf never has.
9) What is the Mets winning percentage in games when they enjoy a pitcher homer? .499

Think higher, man. The opposing starting pitcher can't even keep the Mets pitcher in the ballpark, but the Mets STILL can't muster a .500 record?
10) Who are the only two Mets relievers to homer? Mahomes and Fucking Skip Lockwood

Poor Skip Lockwood[/bigpurple], to earn such censure when he is the correct answer.

Mahomes, alas, is mahomerless.
11) Who had the most homers as a Mets pitcher? Gooden

Gooden[/bigpurple] it is! His seven KABOOMS! outpacing fellow legend Tom Seaver by one.
12) Which Mets pitcher homered in the fewest career at-bats as a Mets pitcher? Mahomes

Enough with that guy.
13) Which Mets pitcher, who homered as a Mets pitcher, had the most homers over his entire career? Gooden

Gooden's seven Met homers were the bulk of the eight he hit as a big leaguer. But this slugging hurler hit 15!
14) Which two future Mets pitching coaches gave up a homer to a Mets pitcher? Warthen, Gibson

During his relatively brief career, Warthen was untainted (in this regard anyhow). Gibson wasn't really a pitching coach, but also was untainted, as noted above.
15) Which team have the Mets victimized the most with pitcher homers? Phillies

HA! Stupid Phillies! They've given up six homers to Mets pitchers. But this team has given up seven.
16) Who are the only three players to hit a homer as a Mets pitcher and give up a homer TO a Mets pitcher? Terrell Gooden mahomes

Mahomes is trying to weedle his way in to this. But he fails to qualify for this mixed distinction.
17) Which two Mets pitcher have hit turnaround homers, turning a defecit into a lead? Gooden, Mahomes

Very tough one. But significant! These would be two of the biggest homers hit by Mets pitchers. Not Gooden and NOT Mahomes(!). Hint: One is quite recent and one is quite ancient, as the Mets go.
18) How many homers have Mets pitchers hit in interleague play? 15

I wish!
19) Who is the only Met pitcher to hit a homer in the ninth or later? Harry Fucking Parker

His he related to Lockwood?
20) Which two Mets pitchers pitched a shutout while homering? Terrell Gooden

Nope. Here's a hint: Both of these heroes were southpaws.
Frayed Knot wrote:
One of #6 is Darling

This question is closed! Ron Darling[/bigpurple] is correct! He burned Philadelphia's Phloyd Youmans on 6/24/89, and then turned around and got that nasty Norm Charton on 6/30. He must've thought he had this hitting thing figured out, but he never hit another before or since!

Seaver and Darling. So let that be a lesson. If you want to be a Mets broadcaster, be a starting pitcher who homers in consecutive starts.

Jack Hamilton[/bigpurple] is correct! He went deep off of Al Jackson 5/20/67 for four runs... and the Mets lost, 11-9.

Frayed Knot wrote:
12) Which Mets pitcher homered in the fewest career at-bats as a Mets pitcher?

#12 Syndergaard

This is a good answer based on a not-so-well phrased question. Syndergaard homered in like his third start, so at the time of the clout, he would have likely been the answer. But what I meant to ask for is the guy who homered in the least amount of total Met plate appearances in his total career, up to the current time. Syndergaard has since exceeded the total of the guy I'm thinking of.

Don Cardwell[/bigpurple] who had three homers during his Mets tenure, had 15 over the course of his career, going back to 1957, and is indeed the guy we're looking for. Always bet on guys named "Don." Drysdale, Gullett... Newcombe. They bring the lumber.

Though honestly, Cardwelll's hitting numbers weren't so hot apart from the 15 homers. .387 career OPS. Great answer by you.

On 9/21/89, Sid Fernandez went deep, improbably, off of Dan Quisenberry, one of only two homers the sinkerballer allowed all season. But alas, it was a solo shot, so our second grand slammer is still out there.

The big shot we're looking for is in fact the answer to a few of these questions.

Lockwood had already given him two innings, but when the first two batters (Tim Foli and Joel Youngblood) failed to get the ball out of the infield, he decided to let Skip bat so he could go ahead and finish the game.

Finish it he did, but not before first KABOOMING! the ball into a three-run pad.

Landrith's HR was the first walk-off HR in Mets history, and in fact, the first walk-off hit of any kind, although they surely weren't calling it a "walk-off" in 1962.

The Mets would walk-off beat the Braves in the second game of that doubleheader also, which the Mets obviously swept.

Craig Anderson was the winning pitcher in both games of the twinbill. Go ahead and ask Craig when he'd get his next win.

Read about that here at the Hardball Times.

Re: Pitcha Powa

Spahn? Seaver?

Spahn's right! He gave up a game winning HR to Hobie Landrith in '62 -- a well known HR in Met lore.

I don't think I was aware of that. Make it more well known. I mean, details please.
