Kevin Plawecki

Really thought he was going to be better. I mean, he looks like he can hit. Short stroke, quick to the ball, has enough size to hit for some power.

When he first came up I thought he could be a candidate to hit in the 2 spot when he got comfortable. But man, he's kinda sucked. It's only 300 ABs. And so obviously you don't give up on him. But man. Come on Kevin. Hit better.

Yeah the injury is turning out as bad for Plawecki as d'Arnaud. While you wonder whether dArnaud is too frequently injured to be reliable, you wonder how many golden opportunities Plawecki is going to crap on.

Re: Kevin Plawecki

I haven't seen anything from Plawecki over the past two seasons that shows me he'll hit enough to be considered a #1 catcher.

Even with Duda out for a minimum of six weeks, I'm more concerned about how long d'Arnaud will be away and what that solution will be if it's too much longer.

Can Conforto catch?

Re: Kevin Plawecki

Almost no young Mets catcher has ever hit out of the box. Grote, Stearns, Hundley all come to mind as sucking batting early in their careers. Even d'Arnaud looked a little clueless. I wouldn't give up on the guy based on what amounts to a few extended cameos.

This.

It's certainly frustrating that he hasn't taken advantage of two extended opportunities, first last season and now this one and it could cost him down the road. But, at the same time, it shouldn't be taken as a sign that he can't be a major league hitter.

Re: Kevin Plawecki

He was the starting catcher from mid-April through July last season. That's longer than an extended cameo (Word Up!). I believe Kevin has more PA than any other Mets catcher since the start of last season.

Travis went through his growing pains in 2013/2014 when the Mets weren't trying to win RIGHT NOW!

That's true, and catching is hard, but we're rapidly coming up on a fairly large sample.

The Mets clearly thought he could hit too though, keeping him around as the backup instead of giving him reps in Vegas. seems like perhaps that was the wrong plan.

I was remarking more on the fact that these great opportunities keep coming up for him.

Unlike, say, John Gibbons.

Re: Kevin Plawecki

Travis can hit. I don't see him being a durable catcher anytime soon.

I mean a sore arm throwing to second? That's the job. Teach him LF 1B or off to the American League.

I know I am harsh here but I want him to step up.

Part time catcher in like a platoon? Crap, I don't know.

He's at 350 PAs or so in the majors, following 260 at Vegas. He's done little but make some empty contact* with any of it.

It may not be skill-set definitive, but it's certainly indicative.

*Vegas. God, what I'd give for empty contact from him now.

It's punishment from the fates for exiling Anthony Recker, I tells ya.

The universe sent us an angel and we SENT HIM AWAY!

I did kinda hate to see him go, but I loved to watch him leave.
