Tech Support/Bad Parent

We gave in and told Lunchpail he could use his birthday $$ to download Plants v. Zombies on my home PC, only to buy + download it and discover we're about 4 generations graphic cards & processors from minimum requirements. I don;t know shit about computers.

Took a few hours to learn all this but still don;t know whether that kinda crap can even be installed (I have a 2013 HP Omni desktop running Windows 10) and if so, how much $$ it will cost me.

Otherwise the plan is, give the kid his money back and acknowledge what a half-assed job of parenting I'm doing. Help?

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

Post a shot of your -Start -Settings -System -About screen. Jeez, 2013 isn't
that old to run a game. Maybe there's something or things that load automatically
that are chewing up RAM?

Here's my Can I Run It Report.

I think this suggests I need a new video card and a better processor. I just priced this out and it'd be cheaper to buy an xbox. Thanks!

Onto another Geek Squad question. I upgraded to Windows 10, now my wifi drops more than it used to.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

The processor is two generations behind what's required. You might be able to make things work by clicking on those upgrade links; newer software might solve the problem.

But the slow processor means gameplay is going to be laggy and slow.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

oof. I've never been a parts guy, but that looks way behind. I doubt updating the drivers will do any good. That graphics card might struggle with missile command.

Claims I can't run it either, thought I think it's lying. Though my computer is ~6 years old now or something, and wasn't really top of the line either.

That game very well could be a gateway drug kinda thing though, so you might want to think about pushing past the minimums a little bit. Next birthday is under a year away after all and the next Civilizations might be out by then..

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

Weeks ago when we were still on the old server we came across the fact
that Sophos was one of the internet security services that was 'black flaggin'
us so I was looking around on their site and found they offer free internet
security for home-use only.

My newest computer came with McAfee and was using that up until a few days
ago but it was a trial so I started an account with Sophus for the free service
on three pc's. Works great, actually blocked something this morning. It really
is free! Free is good.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

I can't find the thread where I was asking about wireless access points and
poor wi-fi in certain areas of the house. Last week I called Verizon and they
sent me a wi-fi extender (another $6/mo) that I connected to a coaxial cable
split in worst room. Works like a charm and the signal outside and even in
the garage is strong as late inning pitching against the Mets with RISP!

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

I got an email from Yahoo saying there was a security breach in 2014 ans they provide a list of FAQa and link once I click on MAIL..
But they do not let you get out of that message to access the rest of my mail.
Anyone else having that problem or have you seen the resolution?
Please let me know.
Thanks.

Does it work as well as an opposing reliever trying to strike out Jay Bruce?

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

I haven't shopped or looked into this yet but I have to. I need to get a new
network storage device with RAID this weekend. I have an older one on my
home (office) network and it's making noises. It could be the fan I suppose
but it's time. The one I have has 2-1TB drives but since it's old I guess there
are bigger and better things out there. I don't want to spend a boat load of
money on this, but I also don't want to cheap out and lose stuff in the end.

Besides the cloud, where do ya'll keep your stuff?

on my computer and I have an external. Mostly for pictures but I have a bazillion of them.

I should probably get one of those fireboxes for the external, or keep it at my parents house or something.

Well the network drive is just a glorified external I suppose. I like it because
I can use it all over the house and outside. And ya, size wise it's basically for
pictures, video, and music [crossout]basically[/crossout] and a very small percentage of important
stuff. I looked around a little last night, looks like I don't have to spend all that
much. I was hoping someone had something they like instead of buying cold.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

I ended up getting a WD My Cloud 4TB drive at Best Buy. I didn't go
for the RAID one which was almost double the raid-bucks. We'll see.

Side note, part of all this was my worries over my music library. I've
been off the music download thing for a long time and my iPod is old
and could die any day. A tech at Apple spent TWO hours this afternoon
on the phone with me today getting stuff authorized from old downloads
and getting all my 6500 songs of the iPod and I have a fresh and working
iTunes thing going on on my laptop. Dude was the poster child for support.

Too bad you don't have them on 5¼-inch floppies. Now those were floppy!

I have an external 5¼" drive in the same box but no way to get something
off of the smaller disks. I do have an old computer buried somewhere in the
basement that might have one. I'd love to see if I could get Generic CADD
to run in Windows 10. Will take this to the tech support thread. #Geek

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

Was it a DOS program or a Windows program?

I guess it's possible that you might be able to find the old executable somewhere online and you won't even need to extract it from the floppy. But there might be other supporting files that you'd also need, like DLLs, for example.

And something like this might be helpful:

DOS, but I've run it in older versions of Windows many years ago.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

You're right about getting it free online, found an abandonware download site.
Thanks, never would have thought that such things exist.

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

Yesterday I was messing around with the security settings of a network
folder that I thought was making it more secure (meaning I could only open/
use it) and this morning the folder is unaccessible. I went in to look at the folder
under the folder's-properties'-security tab I see this...

"you do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings"

I'm really the only network user and the admin, but how the fuck did I lock
myself out and is there a way to fix it?

try this.

type cmd into the start/search window, right click and run as admin

then paste this:

C:\>icacls "D:\test" /grant Everyone:(OI)(CI)F /T

(replace D:\test with the directory in question)

Re: Tech Support/Bad Parent

Any PS4 people here?
That's Little Solos requested gift. Not sure what all I need to look for. He does want to be able to play friends (whatever the PS4 equivalent is to xBox live). Mostly he plays sports games but he's now 13 and playing with friends I guess that could change.
So what am I looking for? Seems like there'S a $300 system and a $400 system, but I don't know what we really need.

Thanks, I did try something similar (the switches or the whatever the last part
of your command was a little different) and got an error message. I called the drive
manufacturer and they alerted me that the built in utility software had a process to
reset the drive to out-of-the-box factory status so I did that. It took 12 hours over
the weekend but all is back to normal.
