IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

NY Mets at Miami
When: 4:10 PM ET, Saturday, June 4, 2016
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
SportsDirect Inc.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins came up aces after electing to shuffle the cards within his lineup in a bid to generate some offense. The new deal paid immediate dividends for the Mets, who look to ride the momentum of a trio of homers in the opener when they play the second contest of the three-game series versus the host Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Asdrubal Cabrera, who was moved into injured David Wright's No. 2 slot in the order, homered and Nos. 7-8 batters James Loney and Rene Rivera belted two-run shots in New York's 6-2 triumph on Friday. The uprising was a welcome change for the Mets, who posted just nine runs during their previous five games (1-4). Miami's offense continues to struggle as it has mustered just 12 runs in its last five contests (3-2). Slugger Giancarlo Stanton is mired in a woeful 4-for-38 stretch in his last 11 games, but is 5-for-11 with a pair of homers in his career versus Saturday starter Bartolo Colon.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Bartolo Colon (4-3, 3.39 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Justin Nicolino (2-3, 4.50)

Colon turned in his second straight strong outing on Sunday, following up his one-run, five-hit performance in a win over Washington by surrendering just two runs in six innings of a no-decision versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 43-year-old Dominican has kept the ball in the park in each of his last three outings and allowed just six homers in 61 innings this season. Colon owns a strong 7-4 career mark versus Miami with a 2.92 ERA, but did not pitch in the teams' initial series in April.

Nicolino fell to 0-3 in his last five starts after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of a 10-0 setback to Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old kept the ball in the park after serving up three homers in his previous two outings and has only issued one walk over the last three contests. Nicolino overcame a pair of homers to pitch six innings in his lone career start versus the Mets last year, drawing a no-decision for his efforts.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York RHP Zack Wheeler is expected to throw 30 pitches on Saturday as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
2. Miami LF Christian Yelich is 8-for-17 with three RBIs and two runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.
3. Mets LF Michael Conforto, who fell off the toilet in the batting order, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the opener to drop to 1-for-26 in his last seven

Mets revise projection, eye mid-July return for Zack Wheeler

Not wholly unexpected, IMO. Probably a better target than July 1.

Conforto has hit the wall for the time being. It might be a decent time to see DeAza for a day or to.

GO COLON.

A year later,

Asdrubal Cabrera batting third and Neil Walker fourth. Who woulda thunk.

Cespedes went to Cuba for the day.

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

This has to be the only team where getting the leadoff hitter on base decreases their odds of scoring.
5 innings, 5 leadoff hitters reached, one scores. In fact the only two to even reached 2nd base were the guy who later scored and the one who got picked off from there on the subsequent pitch.

And this doesn't even speak to all those leadoff guys they wasted in the 13-walk/1 run disaster game.

Marlins starter Nicolino retired just 14 of the 25 hitters he faced (9 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP) ... and yet got out with only 2 runs against.

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

Robles, meanwhile, does the opposite: gets to 2 out and nobody on and then allow three straight runners to reach and a run ... and only a circus catch by Lagares kept him from giving up 3

De Aza was already in that batting spot from PH-ing earlier.
But, yes, it appears that Cespedes is NOT available seeing as how deGrom is going to PH for Reed in the #2 spot.

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

A good game. A nightmare for Plawecki. I feel for him but half of that feeling was anger. The play at the plate was so embarrassing. And then to get picked off! I'd bury my face in the dirt too.

I don't think Plawecki is as bad as all this. But I am on the fence now, and I wasn't that down on him before this game.
More importantly, Loney gappers, Flores and Reynolds doing stuff, and Familia with, did they say his 33rd save in a row?

The Lagares catch was huge. He didn't turn the thumb too bad. He shouldn't be long.

Cespedes...?

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

DeAza was brought in during the off season to play CF. He has credentials and is essentially being wasted at this point with Cespedes signed.

Injuries would get him more time but Terry might want to try to get this guy 3-4 starts a week.

Mets might not be trying not to break Plawecki's confidence til Travis comes back.

By rights, Monell should be up at this point.

Bottom line, WE WON!

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

I was driving to my in-laws today and was listening to the Marlins feed on the radio. The announcer for was telling a story about how Neil Walker's father was scheduled to take the ill-fated plane trip to Nicaragua with Roberto Clemente but cancelled the plan in the last minutes.

I hadn't heard that story before. Have I been living in a bubble?

Must be freaky for Neil.

Re: IGT 06/04 - Mets at Marlins

The way I've heard it told is that Clemente himself told him to stay home, and spend the new year with his family.

Puts him in the company of Dion DiMucci, Eric Clapton, and Marky Mark among folks just missing a doomed flight.

Two 0-fers for Murphy too. Hadn't had two of those in a row all season prior to this.

Jeez. That's very Tholean of him. And very much like Twittering douchebag Metfans to chase him into it.

That said, club seems to have deleted Plawecki's "starting 9" account. Rene is now No. 1, and I'm sure Plawecki will get ample opportunity to reclaim his game in AAA shortly.

He probably needed that last year too.
