Going for the Sweep IGT, Braves @ Mets 6/19/16

1:10 PM
Julio Teheran [2-7; 2.93; 0.99] vs Jacob deGrom [3-3; 2.82; 1.15]

After two games with an offense totaling a whopping 3 runs on 13 hits -- most of them singles, none of them timely (0-for-15 w/RiSP) -- against the worst team in baseball whose starting pitchers entered the series with a combined career win total of zero, we actually have to face a real hurler today (even if his record doesn't currently reflect it) in order to complete the sweep.
I think we can do it!

On the other side it's deGrom's job to buck the trend of getting through the 1st inning unscathed but requiring 25-30 pitches to do so thereby putting the Met starter behind the eight-ball for the remainder of the game and necessitating a 3-4 inning bullpen outing.

Supposed to be beautifully clear, by the way... sunscreen liberally, man.

Nope! Nearing 70 with one out in the 4th.
If he gets past 5 innings today it would be surprising.

And I believe the Braves have more two out hits in this series than the Mets have hits, and we KNOW they have more RiSP hits than the Mets since the Mets have none.

Sorry, totally didn't see this thread this morning for some reason...
Atlanta at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, June 19, 2016
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

A three-game series against the woeful Atlanta Braves was supposed to be the easiest part of the New York Mets' eight-game homestand, but it is proving to be more than they can handle. The Braves seek a season-high fifth straight victory on Sunday as they attempt to complete a sweep of the Mets.

National League-worst Atlanta (22-46) already has clinched its first series win since taking two of three against Miami from May 27-29 and only has swept one opponent all season - downing the Marlins in three straight during a four-game winning streak from April 15-19. The Braves matched that surge with Saturday's 4-3 win in New York and are averaging 6.3 runs during their winning streak - more than double the 3.1 runs they scored over their first 64 contests. The Mets, who had won five of the first six meetings of the season prior to this series, have totaled four runs against Atlanta's young pitching staff this weekend after roughing up Pittsburgh for 17 in their final two contests of a three-game set that began the homestand. New York, which will host Kansas City for two games in a rematch of last year's World Series beginning on Tuesday, has fallen 6 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Washington after it was tied with the Nationals atop the division exactly three weeks ago.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Julio Teheran (2-7, 2.93 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (3-3, 2.82)

Teheran was saddled with another hard-luck loss against Cincinnati on Tuesday despite allowing only one baserunner after the first inning, yielding three runs and three hits while fanning eight over seven frames. The 25-year-old Colombian has permitted three runs or fewer in each of his last 11 turns, yet he is only 2-5 in that stretch as the Braves have not scored more than four runs in any of his outings. Teheran gave up one hit over seven scoreless innings in a win versus the Mets last June, improving to 5-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts) against them.
Despite logging his sixth quality start in his last eight outings, deGrom remained winless over that time following a loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday in which he allowed two runs while striking out nine over six innings. The Stetson product has yielded 20 total baserunners over his last three outings spanning 19 innings while striking out 28, yet he is 0-2 over that time as the Mets scored a total of two runs. The 27-year-old deGrom gave up a run over 5 2/3 frames in a victory against the Braves on April 24 and owns a 1.89 ERA versus Atlanta in six career starts.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Atlanta cork smoker Freddie Freeman is batting .467 with six runs, seven RBIs and seven extra-base hits over his last seven games.
2. New York 1B James Loney, who went 3-for-3 on Saturday, is hitting .360 during his seven-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 10 consecutive contests.
3. The Braves homered twice Saturday to increase their season total to 31, which is 26 fewer than any other team and 57 fewer than the Mets.

Re: Going for the Sweep IGT, Braves @ Mets 6/19/16

Well since I said that about deGrom's pitch count he's gotten 5 outs on about 12 pitches, so he may actually last another inning or two. Besides, he's got the hardest hit ball of the game for this team today.

Now his only problem is that 2-0 is an insurmountable lead for the offense these days.

At some point you have to stop tipping your cap and say, "We need to make some changes around here".

Yeah that's a good idea ... hit the guy with an .035 BA vs lefties when you desperately need an out and bring the big boys up instead.

And Antonio, why not slow down your pace a bit .... although I'm not sure that's actually possible.
oe: or you could balk in a run, whatever's easier.

Can we just, like, swap out the Mets minus Cespedes and, like, Cabrera for the 51s this week, just to see what happens?

Twenty-eight years from now when many of us will be well into our twilight years
(hopefully) the Mets will return to the World Series. The drought will be known as
The Curse of Daniel Murphy by about 2023. Stay tuned.

Sandy needs to DFA Bastardo. He can call up Logan GilEdgin or whomever he wants.

The only nice thing was the Padres taking two of three from the Nats out west whilst we wuz stinkin' up the joint back east here, although we did get passed by the Marlins in the process.

Oh, and the Yanx lost to the Twins for what I think is the 3rd or 4th time this century - unless you include post-season in which case it's even less.

I hope Sandy is healthy enough for the job.

Re: Going for the Sweep IGT, Braves @ Mets 6/19/16

After this one I'm not worried anymore. If no moves are made and these guys don't step it up big time I'll be thinking ahead to 2017. After this game, allowing some stringbean to go 9 and almost no-no you at home to complete a sweep against THE WORST TEAM IN THE N.L., what's the point of worrying? I worry about the team when they are contending and hit some bumps, but this isn't contending. I don't know what the fuck this is but I don't like it one bit.

Harvey w/9 loses, deGrom no win in his last 9 starts? Matz looking good then bad, good then bad. It's never what you expect, is it? And the hitting, or lack thereof. I dunno, we know these guys can hit but they aren't. How do you rattle that cage w/o upsetting the apple cart?

That almost catch today by Grandy was a magnificent effort and if he held on to that I would have officially named it a top 20 all-time Mets catch. And it did look just like a ball of snow dropping off the cone.

The only way I can look at this right now is if this is the low point this season in a few weeks we can erase this one from our memory files. Don't wanna look too far ahead but we are going to have to play the Nats & the Cubs like it's postseason baseball.
The Mets lack of contention has created this urgency. They made a hill but I'm sure Bob Murphy would say that it isn't too steep to climb.

I hope they do but I see no more sense in worrying about it.

I have also had enough of "BubbleButt" Bastardo.
Damn, I remember years ago when he was a Phil, coveting him (a sin in the Metropolitan Bible) and thinking "I wish the guy was on the Mets". Maybe that's why now that we got him he sucks anal spillage.

Plawecki's a walking farm man and he looks resigned to it. d'Arnaud might end up fitting the bill, maybe they installed some bionic parts, but if he goes down again we need (Rivera is good on D but we cannot carry his O) a real catcher. At least if we still had Recker the pain of watching him play wouldn't be as bad cause he's such a hunk. Come to think of it a hunk of shit might be our best option, if it's a big enough turd to stop wild pitches.

Conforto needs a streak of consistency.

Oy. K, I think I'm vented.
No,...wait...U FUCKED UP MY FATHER'S DAY METS!!!!. K, whew, I'm done.

Feel better. :)

Good time at the game yesterday, result notwithstanding. But it's hard to teach your kid to keep score when you don't get any baserunners, Mets.

There is a word.
