Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track?

It was once a foregone conclusion that David Wright would one day own the Mets HR franchise record -- a formality -- another achievement in the illustrious career of the Mets greatest home grown hitter. The Captain averaged over 20 HR's a year over his first 10 seasons and by age 30, had closed to within 30 HR's of Darryl Strawbery's all-time Mets mark of 252. Now battling spinal stenosis, a degenerative and progressive condition that has limited his PT and his HR prowess, Wright has hit but 20 HR's over his last three seasons combined. Now facing more uncertainty over a herniated disk in his neck, today's poll questions is ... will Wright break Strawberry's franchise HR record? We'll know a lot more in a day or so, but things tend to wind down, rather than abruptly stop, especially for a guy on a long-term deal, so I voted yea. He was hitting when the neck thing hit him, and that doesn't seem as career threatening as the stenoisis. Unless it is. Or unless they're somehow linked, like Columbo insinuates.

I voted no. I'm not getting too excited about his seven home runs so far this year. I'm guessing that General Custer killed some Native Americans during his last stand, but not enough to save him. I feel the same way about David reaching the record before he has to leave the game for good. Not enough. Later

At least 99 documented Native American combatants were killed at Little Big Horn, not including the Native American scouts that US Calvary was using. So using that precedent, Wright should fly past Strawberry easy.

It was a metaphor to say that I believe Wright is on his last stand. I know you knew that. He has 10 HRs to go He has 4-2/3 seasons left on his contract He hit three HRs in his most recent twelve at-bats We don't even know if he needs to be DL'd at this point much less essentially moth-balled for the remainder of his career. Yeah, I think he'll get there.

This is a really good question. The obvious answer is "of course he will - he only needs ten." But I honestly don't know. And when you look at that dropoff, yikes. I'm voting yes, though. Either way, I'm reminded of Don Mattingly.

Sure, but Mattingly hung on for years and years playing a sub-optimal level. Pretty much 1990 to 1995. Of course, you can say that Wright already has half or more of those six years behind him, but not all of his drop off has been back-related. I'm happy to lay 100 sugarbucks on Wright capturing the record.

Definitely not looking too likely this year with the herniated disc in his neck. Just seems that too many injuries/health problems are piling up on Wright. I really like Wright, he is one of my favorite Mets, but I fear his time as a productive major leaguer is rapidly slipping away.

Those who voted 'NO' -- or want to change to that now -- are essentially arguing that his career was/is over. He's 10 HRs away and, even in the post spinal stenosis diagnosis era, he's HR'd 11 times in 300 PA. That's more or less a half season's playing time for a guy who has four seasons after this one on his contract. It's always possible that he is indeed done, but I'd vote against it, and if he's not done he's going to get there.

I figgered there wouldn't be more than two.

I highly doubt it. I seriously hope I am wrong, but I don't expect to see David Wright play MLB again, unless it is a ceremonial appearance at the end of a season to essentially allow the fans to say goodbye and show their appreciation for his having been the face of the franchise for many years.

That ceremonial appearance, if it's in an official game, would cost the Wilpons millions in insurance money, wouldn't it? And if he makes a pinch-hit appearance and strikes out (which is very likely), wouldn't that be kind of a downer?

I imagine he won't be activated unless he's there to actually be active. But a one-day appearance shouldn't cost the team too much, as I understand the arrangement.

If both the Mets and Wright agree that Wright's career is over and all that's possibly left is a token farewell appearance, I suppose it could be negotiated with the insurer to allow for the farewell without having the Mets forfeit coverage.

You know, even if he were to suddenly be able to play, does he even have a place on this team? You don't play him over any regulars, and it's hard to cut a bench player for a guy who may not be able to answer the bell on any given day. So at the end, it wasn't even the spinal stenosis that did him in right? It was the neck and shoulder injury?

Ultimately, it's going to be months before he's MLB ready. And it's impossible to say where we'll be when that time comes. If he's magically healed and MLB ready right now, though, you're right, there's no place for him on the roster. Thankfully, that's not an issue.

If he was magically ready to play today, he might be taking Céspedes' place on the roster. Work on getting him ready and worry about where he fits if and when it comes to that.

SNY was playing the Colon HR game last night. Did you know that in that game, David Wright was 2 for 2 with a HR and 3 BB? That was May 7, 2016. He looked strong and relatively healthy. It's crazy what a difference 2 years makes.
