Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track?
Yes | 12 votes |
No | 10 votes |

It was once a foregone conclusion that David Wright would one day own the Mets HR franchise record -- a formality -- another achievement in the illustrious career of the Mets greatest home grown hitter. The Captain averaged over 20 HR's a year over his first 10 seasons and by age 30, had closed to within 30 HR's of Darryl Strawbery's all-time Mets mark of 252. Now battling spinal stenosis, a degenerative and progressive condition that has limited his PT and his HR prowess, Wright has hit but 20 HR's over his last three seasons combined. Now facing more uncertainty over a herniated disk in his neck, today's poll questions is ... will Wright break Strawberry's franchise HR record?

I took no, because I think this is his last season.

We'll know a lot more in a day or so, but things tend to wind down, rather than abruptly stop, especially for a guy on a long-term deal, so I voted yea. He was hitting when the neck thing hit him, and that doesn't seem as career threatening as the stenoisis.

Topps Heritage David Wright through the years:

He's how many away? 10?
|
Ashie62 Jun 01 2016 11:56 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
He gets the 10 by accident.

I voted no.

At least 99 documented Native American combatants were killed at Little Big Horn, not including the Native American scouts that US Calvary was using.

Custard? I like custard! Huh? What?

Do you really think Custer personally killed all of them? Anyhow, I wasn't citing that as a precedent. It was a metaphor to say that I believe Wright is on his last stand. I know you knew that. As I posted (and voted) in another thread, I think this is his last year and he will retire at the end of this season. Later

He has 10 HRs to go

Lefty Specialist Jun 02 2016 01:03 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
He'll get there. But not easily.
|
seawolf17 Jun 02 2016 01:16 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
This is a really good question. The obvious answer is "of course he will - he only needs ten." But I honestly don't know. And when you look at that dropoff, yikes. I'm voting yes, though.

Edgy MD Jun 02 2016 02:37 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Sure, but Mattingly hung on for years and years playing a sub-optimal level. Pretty much 1990 to 1995.

Centerfield Jun 02 2016 02:38 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Me too. I think Wright gets this easy.

Definitely not looking too likely this year with the herniated disc in his neck. Just seems that too many injuries/health problems are piling up on Wright.

Those who voted 'NO' -- or want to change to that now -- are essentially arguing that his career was/is over.

Ceetar Jul 15 2016 07:30 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Add in the DH and he might have years left.
|
Edgy MD Jul 15 2016 07:35 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Add in card flipping and he'd have decades.

I'm surprised there are as many as five "No" votes. I figgered there wouldn't be more than two.

Ashie62 Jul 16 2016 08:23 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
I can't see a Dr. clearing David with spinal stenosis and a neck fusion. Heck, Wright is a step from being the bubble boy.
|
Zvon Jul 16 2016 08:47 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Alls I can say is that I hope with all my heart that he gets it done. It would be a fitting cap to his career.
|
Ashie62 Jul 16 2016 10:17 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
It most certainly would.
|
Rockin' Doc Jul 16 2016 11:05 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
I truly hope that David Wright can return and become the Mets career leader in home runs. However, I will be quite (pleasantly) surprised if that actually happens.

At this point, not bloody likely.

Benjamin Grimm Feb 28 2017 06:38 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
A few earlier posts in this thread said he needs ten. To clarify, he needs ten homers to tie, eleven to claim the record for his own.
|
DocTee Feb 28 2017 06:40 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
He gets it-- I hope.
|
Zvon Feb 28 2017 09:11 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
He gets the eleven, all pinch hitting and DH'ing.

Kinda cruel to bump this, no? But apropos to Nomar's post in the "Where Mets Rank" thread.
|
Rockin' Doc Apr 30 2018 03:11 AM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
I highly doubt it. I seriously hope I am wrong, but I don't expect to see David Wright play MLB again, unless it is a ceremonial appearance at the end of a season to essentially allow the fans to say goodbye and show their appreciation for his having been the face of the franchise for many years.

Fman99 Apr 30 2018 03:52 AM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Agreed, I think he's toast. What a bummer.
|
Lefty Specialist Apr 30 2018 12:56 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
Sad to think he's done. But it sure looks like he is. He's not even an afterthought any more.
|
Edgy MD Apr 30 2018 01:15 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
I imagine he won't be activated unless he's there to actually be active. But a one-day appearance shouldn't cost the team too much, as I understand the arrangement.
|
batmagadanleadoff Apr 30 2018 01:36 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
|
If both the Mets and Wright agree that Wright's career is over and all that's possibly left is a token farewell appearance, I suppose it could be negotiated with the insurer to allow for the farewell without having the Mets forfeit coverage.
|
Centerfield Apr 30 2018 01:47 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
You know, even if he were to suddenly be able to play, does he even have a place on this team? You don't play him over any regulars, and it's hard to cut a bench player for a guy who may not be able to answer the bell on any given day.
|
Nymr83 Apr 30 2018 02:45 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
If he was ever actually ready, you figure it out. Gonzalez wont be here forever so that's the roater spot. Playing time? Earn it.
|
seawolf17 Apr 30 2018 02:49 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
|
This. Ultimately, it's going to be months before he's MLB ready. And it's impossible to say where we'll be when that time comes. If he's magically healed and MLB ready right now, though, you're right, there's no place for him on the roster. Thankfully, that's not an issue.

'magically' healed, no. DH/once a week/PH ready? seeya Jose.
|
d'Kong76 Apr 30 2018 03:28 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
That would be kinda funny if David bumped his ol' buddy Jose off the bus.
|
Edgy MD Apr 30 2018 03:37 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |
If he was magically ready to play today, he might be taking Céspedes' place on the roster. Work on getting him ready and worry about where he fits if and when it comes to that.

seawolf17 Apr 30 2018 03:48 PM Re: Poll: Is Wright on the Wright Franchise HR track? |

He'd have to be the most likely guy to go, yes.

SNY was playing the Colon HR game last night. Did you know that in that game, David Wright was 2 for 2 with a HR and 3 BB?
