Third Lane Presidential Folks

Conservative columnist and Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, a figurehead in the #nevertrump movement, is apparently trying to push conservative writer and lawyer David French into the ring. French, staff writer for the National Review is a talented writer and Iraqi War vet. He's no slouch, but he's goofy looking and nasally (a little wispy) voiced and has near-zero name recognition. Whether he can do more than deliver ideological talking points a la Senator Cruz is yet to be seen. But I bet he can hang. Libertarians come out of a contested convention with Gary Johnson, the favorite, but also add former-Massachusetts Governor William Weld, formerly considered a strong Republican candidate.

A recent poll had the Libertarians with Johnson running at 5% and Green Party with presumptive nominee Jill Stein at 3%

That 5% was before Weld joined the ticket! Wonder how high the Libertarians will have to poll in order to demand an invite to the debates. What a crazy race!

Makes you wonder also why Kristol is so intent on running his own candidate; possibly because, while he'd consider the Libertarians Laissez-Faire enough for his tastes economically, they're not neo-Con enough for him on international issues. But, if his ultimate aim here in to hold fast to 'NeverTrump', he risks dividing that nascent movement into the 21st century version of the 'Judean People's Front' vs the 'People's Front of Judea'.

I think his purpose is safeguarding his idea of real Republican principles — which have all been thrown over in the name of Trump's fascist Know Nothing populism — in the hopes that they can re-emerge at some brighter hour in the future.
