my computer downgraded to Windows 10 without my permission. I am SURE I never gave permission because I was very careful to avoid the near hourly popups being forced upon me. fuck you Microsoft, i smell a class-action suit.

I hear you. I can't describe how freaking irritating I find their practice. I get that pop-up to switch over to Windows 10 at least once, probably twice a day. At least. Who knows because I'm not keeping track? Maybe there are some days when I get that pop-up five or eight or ten times. I don't know. I reject it every time because I don't want to upgrade. But I'm resigned to the fact that one day I'll accidentally click on the accept link and get that upgrade against my will even though I've already rejected it hundreds of times, because all it'll take is one slip-up from me for them to force it on me. And they damn well know that this is what's going on. It's a rigged game.

It's an outrageous practice.

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

Happened to me today without any choice. I was on the internet and all of a sudden I got the message "We are updating you to Windows 10. Do not shut your PC off" (or something like that).
I'm still trying to find stuff.
Really pissed.

For the most part, I'm fine with Win10. The thing I've always found
irritating about Windows is they've dumb-ed it down so many times over
the last decade that it's actually harder to deal with problems and to sup-
port it. XP-Pro was my favorite version; but it, like me, is now a dinosaur.

I don't think you will, you'll either just get it, via Windows 10's forced upgrades, or you won't get it because they want you to buy it. the free OS upgrade thing is new.

Not a Microsoft Q, but since we're talking internet failures...
My Verizon FIOS router is in a small room 2 1/3 stories up in front of the house.
The wi-fi in the back of the house (patio/garage) sbhmc. Will adding a wireless ac-
cess point to my network increase signal strength or is it all the same if it sucks it
sucks and it is what it is? It would be nice to be able to work outside sometimes on
patio but the signal to my laptop is sporadic at best most times.

if you can't move the router, even past one more wall, yeah that'd probably help.

I know Verizon will/wants to sell you a Quantum router with super range.

Thanks, yeah the router ain't going anywhere anytime soon. If it were to move, it
would be to the basement which is probably even worse wireless-wise since we have
an old rock foundation. Any brand recommendations? I know at my old job I had an
HP WAP that was pretty strong, but there were a lot off halls and sheet rock where I
have 85 yr old solid plaster except for one small room.

I've never messed around with the access points/extenders so couldn't tell you. I imagine anything would work fine as long as you can clear a few walls or at least a dozen feet or so closer.

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

What's the final consensus on Windows 10? My experience with operating systems is that you can used to anything if you have to.

My new PC will come with it.

A big red flag to me is that they will allow you to downgrade back to 7 ( I don't know how that would work in this situation, new, because I've never had Windows 7- my last op sys was Vista). To me, that's not a vote of confidence from MS.

It also says that older programs might not work properly. If PsP7 doesn't work I will be very upset. I'll have to create a PC tower with an older op sys just for graphics.

From what I understand the big change from Windows 7 and up to Windows 10 is the addition of application hardware. App ready and touch screen ready crap. That doesn't concern me.

I think I'm getting that Windows 7 is the best for a old fashioned ( can u believe I'm calling this old fashioned?) set-up, tower type PC w/mouse & keys. But if 10 does all I ask of it, I should never get to experience Windows 7.

PsP7 was designed for Windows 98 :0

It's all 1's and 0's though, and I don't understand why any program ever written should stop running. IIRC I needed a patch for it to work on Vista. It wasn't 100%, but the few functions that were effected still worked, but differently.

Thanks for the responses.

Actually, I have a couple of old towers & Windows 98 & Win98 update discs stored away. All I'd need is a hard drive to make that work. If I make a dedicated set-up like that I'll keep the graphics PC offline. I bet it will run forever.

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

oh, that's Paint Shop Pro. I didn't know that still existed.

I wouldn't bank on it working.

I don't fully understand, but it's not a standalone thing. painting an image on the screen utilizes Operating System functions and those may be implemented differently. Plus Windows 10 is 64 bit and those 0s and 1s are arranged and stored differently.

You could just bite the bullet and use Photoshop or something more modern?

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

I was just going to say Photoshop and Illustrater would make more sense. Adobe
offers cloud based subscriptions now to all that stuff instead of plunking down a
whole wad of cash at once.

You could also partition the drive on new computer (which is probably huge)
and run an older version of Windows if you need to. Partition Magic was, and
I assume still is, one of the better programs to accomplish this without having
to be a complete and total geek hee hee.

I'm fine with Win 10 so far. Have it factory installed on new laptop and the
upgrade on an 4-5 year old desktop. Is the new computer coming with 32 or
64 bit Windows?

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

I think it's almost ridiculously easy to run a virtual machine version of older versions of Windows. (checks, apparently it IS in windows 7, not as easy in Windows 10, but still can be done)

Basically you'd just double click the VM Which would open a instance of Windows XP in the window and you could just install PSP there and run it there, and still save the files to the main computer for use.

Neveh!
Well, not never. Someday I'll find a newer one that suits me. I have looked. I've used a few versions of Photoshop. Not even worth keeping them on the drive. Corel Draw 6 is nice, I have that, but since PsP does all I set out to do I rarely get into Corel Draw to learn how to use it.

Illustrator interested me and I looked into that a while back. It could be the one. Photoshop, I already know it's not the one. I took her out a few times. There was no passion.

This will be 64 bit. I'm not really sure what the difference between 32bit and 64bit does. Operation speeds?

My old PC had a partitioned drive. That worked well. This new drive is bigger so that should work even better. That's a great idea, thank you.

Re: F YOU MICROSOFT

i still have paint shop pro, and i, too, have tried out adobe photoshop and never had it catch on. though i never gave it a real shot and never had the time or inclination towards putting in the time.

i almost never use psp. i rarely have the desire or need to do photo retouching - a red eye here and there is about it, and on the exceedingly rare occasion, i might actually color correct an image. but that's it. i'd actually love to get on the adobe bandwagon for HDR, or for pano-stitching, but again, it's all about time and inclination.

i've been putting off my win10 upgrade by simply not having enough hard drive space for the download to fit. which, well, is a bit of an actual problem. i'm at about 1-2% free space on my drive....

That's another problem I suffer from. I filled up the old drive every month or so and would have to do the external shuffle. I saw what you wrote before MM and I have looked up to see I have 105MB space left. AHHHH!
I thought the old hard drive was plenty of space when I got it. 720GB. Ha! That's almost funny now.

Those fucking bastards finally got me, too. Came back to my PC last night to discover it had been Window-tenned, against my wishes.

I never liked these rules that evolved that require a user to maintain internet connectivity to install and run an app. I always imagined that these companies are abusing these connections to have free rein into my PC (and yours). Edward Snowden only strengthened my suspicions.

I never used the cloud for those reasons.

I did on my old PC. This new one w/Win10 is all geared up for Edge, so I figured I'd give it a try. Chrome always worked very well and I am going to go back to it. Edge does not want to cooperate and will not transfer my bookmarks. It's like they are fighting against each other.

On another note, I've always taken screen shots with my PsP7 graphics program. It's good for game action and making cards and stuff. When I first tried using PsP7 on Windows 10 to take a screenshot I get a message saying "Windows 10 refuses to take screenshots with the current program". WTF? I googled it and found out how I can, but why should I have to use Windows 10 exclusively to take screenshots? When I took them with PsP7 they opened right in the program ready for use. I call bullshit on that. That's restricting for no good reason.

Explorer, Edge whatever they want to call it is evil. It always has been and
always will be. Stay away, stay far far away. I don't get the screenshot issue
you're describing. What difference does it make what takes the screenshot?
I'm missing something?

My screenshots now go to the cloud and I can open them immediately on
four devices. I'd say that's pretty convenient. If you don't like the cloud I
suppose you could send them to a network drive but I haven't checked.
