IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

NY Mets at Washington
When: 7:05 PM ET, Wednesday, June 29, 2016
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets have seen a rash of injuries and a sputtering offense create quite the obstacle in their bid to gain ground in the National League East. The visiting Mets will look to halt their downward slide on Wednesday as they look to salvage the finale of their three-game series versus the first-place Washington Nationals.

Washington's Wilson Ramos hasn't been shy about ratcheting up the offense, ripping a two-run double in Tuesday's 5-0 triumph to increase his RBI total to seven during his 11-game hitting streak. Bryce Harper added a two-run homer to improve to 4-for-7 with three RBIs in the last two contests after going 1-for-17 in the previous six encounters with New York. While the Nationals have answered a season-high seven-game skid with wins in three straight to move five games ahead of the Mets, the latter mustered just five hits en route to being shut out for the eighth time in 2016. New York will turn to Logan Verrett to make a spot start in the series finale before opening a four-game series against the majors-best Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN2, SNY (New York), MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Logan Verrett (3-4, 4.14 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (8-5, 3.52)

Verrett receives the nod with Steven Matz pushed back a day as he deals with bone spurs in his elbow. The 26-year-old, who was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas last week, has scattered two hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief versus Washington this season. Verrett will be making just his fifth start and 21st appearance this season with the Mets.

Scherzer has been plagued by the home-run ball of late, with former Met Kirk Nieuwenhuis belting a two-run shot and Keon Broxton also going deep in a 5-3 setback to Milwaukee on Friday. The 31-year-old has surrendered 20 homers this season - including a pair of solo blasts in 6 1/3 innings of a 2-0 loss to New York on May 17. Scherzer has also been striking out batters at an impressive rate, recording double digits in three straight outings and four of his last five.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York is batting just .212 and averaging 2.5 runs per game over its last 11 contests.
2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon is 7-for-15 with four RBIs and as many runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.
3. Mets RF Brandon Nimmo is 3-for-8 with a run scored in this series.

I think everyone is.

However, a win today defies odds and provides a sliver of hope for the next 10 days.

Miami has a day game in Detroit, so we'll know going in if it's
truly a quest for second place. It's the little things. LGM, YGB,
CRCEMA, etc...

Yeah, and if I can take off my negative-Nancy hat for a minute there
will be large holiday-weekend crowds and maybe a good showing against
a team as hot as Chicago will get some kahnfidence going team wide.

Because as we know, kahnfidence is key.

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

The Loney HR coming as it did right on the heels of the (2nd) Murphy HR which essentially made it meaningless just an inning after it would have been heroic is just too perfect an example for how this season has gone.

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

What the fuck was Gilmartin doing in the game? And for what it's worth I said this at home before the inning started.

It's a close game. Go with a guy who didn't just get ripped 2 days ago.

Another bad game for Terry. Guy should be fired.

Yeah, I don't know what to do with that.

But Familia got four consecutive days off, so he's well rested for.. something.

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

String of LHBs coming up, Bastardo already spent tonight and Blevins, Robles, Reed, Goeddel having pitched the night before, I didn't have a problem with the choice of pitcher.
Not scoring for 23 consecutive innings was my bigger concern.

You wanna shoot a bullpen, go pull the trigger on the Rangers guys who gave up six in the 9th to the Yanx to lose 9-7

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

I don't question his deployment.
Gilmartin was more than good last year and, while he hardly has much of a track record this year to base anything on, prior to the other day had given up just 3 hits over 6 innings across 3 outings.
I'm not going to stop using guys based on having a bad outing last time out.

Do or don't, claiming anyone is "shooting a bullpen" is still deeply misrepresentative.

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

It's not that he had a bad outing his last time out. It's that he got absolutely pasted by these same guys two days ago.

Plus, Gilmartin has never had the traditional lefty splits.

Terry Collins labeled the game a "must-win" beforehand, but didn't manage like it once the bell rung. Sure, not scoring at all is THE big problem, and I'm definitely still pissed at Terry for catching TdA on Syndergaard's start, but Terry is doing nothing to increase their chances.

Re: IGT 06/29 - Mets at Nationals - Quest for Second Place

Terry has never hesitated to give Familia an inning in a non-save situation after a few days of inactivity so I don't know why last night was different. Perhaps he didn't expect his team to score and decided to wait for Thursday given the probability that Matz only goes 5 or 6. In hindsight, it might have cost the Mets the game.

And some on this board (and elsewhere) have skewered him for doing so as if the bad outing which sometimes follows is proof of a cause-effect thing and demanded he not do it again. Kind of a no-win for Terry sometimes.
I not one of those "only in save situations" guys and wouldn't have had a problem if he went to Familia for the 8th last night, but I thought Gilmartin a reasonable choice too and certainly nothing resembling a fireable offense.

"shooting a bullpen" is still deeply misrepresentative.

And was meant to be taken oh so seriously.
