Fireworks Night IGT 7/2 CHC@NYM

The April Mets returned the field again last night, as the team lit up Chicago pitching to the tune of five home runs, and now a team that had been floundering for five weeks is in a position to take a series from what had seemed to be the best team in the league. Two Cy Young winners match up in this game, the visitors coming with 2015 NL winner Jake Arrieta, and the home team defending with 2004 AL winner Bartolo Colón.

In a surprising move, both pitchers have both agreed to take the mound naked, demonstrating their singular prowess and commitment to classical ideal of athletic competition as an offering to the gods.

Oh sure, Arietta looks good naked, but can he do THIS?

Nimmo - LF
Walker - 2B
Cespedes - CF
Loney - 1B
Cabrera - SS
Flores - 3B
De Aza - RF
d'Arnaud - C
Colon - P

Not sure what the purpose of reactivating Lagares if they weren't going to start him. Will shirley start vs the lefty Lester tomorrow.

Zobrist - 2B
Heyward - CF
Bryant - 3B
Rizzo - 1B
Contreras - LF
Montero - C
Russel - SS
Coughlin - RF
Arrieta - P

Arrieta this year: HRs allowed = 4; HRs hit = 2

Re: Fireworks Night IGT 7/2 CHC@NYM

I gots no problem with activating him to be a reserve. If Grandy can't go, we gots three outfielders and Kelly Johnson pretending.

Fourth outfielder > 13th pitcher.

Besides Terry has shown he's no Jerry when it comes to players on the rocks. He's going to find a role for you right up until the day you're released.

Unless Curtis is going on the DL, this has to be DeAza's swan song, right?

Re: Fireworks Night IGT 7/2 CHC@NYM

Certainly a swan song for that two-run homer that Walker hit.

But no, I'm guessing that, barren any DL trips by Grandy or another, that De Aza lasts at least until Reyes arrives.

Cool. Two-run flare where Baez tried to pull a Wright.

Only one Wright, Baez.

For some reason, we're getting Angels vs Red Sox. Boo. Chicago is 2.5 hours away.

Mets at the corners with 1 out in the bottom of the 6th. Best news, Arrieta is done for the night and the Mets are into the bullpen.

Damn! Lagares grounds into a 5-4-3 DP to end the inning. Now it is in the hands of the bullpen.

Reed with the strike out of Kris Bryant to end the inning. Mets lead 4-3 going to the bottom of the 7th. We need some insurance runs.

Well, I'd certainly like some.

The Edwards, Jr. guy the Cubs are bringing in to face Céspy looks about 15.

Re: Fireworks Night IGT 7/2 CHC@NYM

His uniform looks way nto big for him, but he blew away Cespedes on 3 fastballs away. You can't do much with that pitch, unless you're willing to go the other way with it, as Cespedes just showed. Most hitters that try to pull good fastballs on the black (away) at the knees are are playing into the pitcher's hands.

Loney punched out on a pretty low called third strike, but you have to protect the plate with 2 strikes.

Nats lose. Thaaaaaa Nats lose!!

Cincy notches 5 in the 10th, mostly at the expense of reliever Sammy Solis but, really, there were several Washington errors, passed balls, and just general fuck-ups.
Reds were without Votto tonight and even with Votto they're still the Reds so the Nats losing one to them is like found money.

Wonder if they had fireworks after the game. The show was scheduled for Friday night and they even moved up the start time an hour to 6:05 in order to get them in. But rain delays and an overall long game pushed the end of the game passed the hour where DC allows fireworks to go off so at some point during Friday's game they had to announce to the paid crowd that there would be no show after the game.
The best laid plans ...

And, as noted elsewhere, the Braves put a whuppin' on Jose Fernandez -- 9 runs over 6 innings -- so that pus the Fish a bit further back in the rearview.

Reed & Familia last night faced: [AR] Bryant - Rizzo - Contreras - Montero - Russell - [JF] Baez - Ross - Zobrist (slots #3-1 in the lineup)
Two of them hit fair balls, a ground single and a ground-out. K - 1B - K - K - K - K - GO - Foul-out

That's some nice closing in a one-run game.

Re: Fireworks Night IGT 7/2 CHC@NYM

nice night to be in the park with my family... great seats, nice weather, close game, big win, and a good fireworks show. The only irksome thing (other than parking) was the Cubs fan sitting right behind us. He was making all sorts of noise after the Rizzo HR, and somebody yelled out "sit down!", to which he replied, "i AM sitting!", to which i replied "sit quieter," to which replied "I'll be quiet when we stop hitting homers", to which i replied... nothing. I didn't say anything else. I let the Mets do the talking, and when I turned around at the end, Cubbie was gone. Maybe i just imagined him.
